My father was CPO Gunnery on HMS Rodney. He may well have been one of only a few aboard to see the battle as all other crew were closed down carrying out their duties at battle stations.
He joined the RN in about 1931/32, survived the war, and died in 2001. None of Rodney’s crew would be alive today I think.
One of his brothers was injured in a tank battle in the Western Desert, and survived to the age of 60.
Thank you to him for his service, a true hero! Appreciate you watching and have a great week :)
My Mothers cousin died on the HMS Hood in this battle... I carry his name in pride, to the end of my days.

@GaryBest3435: As you should. ❤
My mother knew a man who missed his train and thus the last voyage of HMS Hood. Deep respect to all those on both sides who lost their lives in this pursuit.
Wow! That’s incredible
30 years ago, I noticed a necklace one of my elderly neighbours was wearing. It was for her late brother, whom was serving on Hood when she was sank. It started my interest in the Ship
“Sink the Bismarck” is a great song about this battle by Johnny Horton. Released in 1960 it reached #3 on the charts and #1 in Canada. If you’re a fan of this story or a fan of country music it’s worth a listen.
I’ll have to check that out, thanks! Appreciate you watching and have a fantastic week :)
Unfortunately, in that film the caricaturization of the Germans was unnecessary and diminished what otherwise is a good film. In particular the characterization of Admiral Lutjens, an ascetic but competent officer and anything but a nazi minion as described in the film, borders into the defamatory. The film is very British.
HMS Hood did not hit Bismarck because she mistook Prinz Eugen for the German flagship. Shortly into the action she shifted her fire to Bismarck. Her shells were correct for range but well off line. She was destroyed before she could straddle or hit Bismarck. All three hits on Bismarck came from HMS Prince of Wales. (Source: the book Pursuit, by Ludovic Kennedy, who was stationed on one of the British ships on the morning of Bismarck’s sinking.)
Appreciate you watching and have a great week :)
He wasn't on the hood or POW tho so how would he, not to mention that he's story has changed a few times over the years 😉
@@RS7John The basic facts have remained constant over the 50 or more years I've read about the subject.
@@RS7John Mr. Kennedy did extensive research for his book Pursuit, and he interviewed several participants on both sides of the Battle of the Denmark Strait. The consensus of the people he spoke with was that Hood initially fired at Prinz Eugen and that she caused no damage to either of the German ships. The closest she is believed to have done was a shell that fell short of Prinz Eugen, and exploded in the water. The nose cap of this shell landed at the base of the cruiser’s funnel and was found after the battle. It resembled the head of a fish and was referred to as the Hood’s Fish. I’ve not seen any mention of what happened to this fragment, but I suspect that it was turned over to German arms manufacturers to study, perhaps with an eye toward improving their own armor-piercing shells. (A large number of German shells were duds that failed to explode.). Ludovic Kennedy was present on a destroyer on the morning of Bismarck’s sinking and he took the footage of her being shelled by the British ships. He was a respected author who wrote on a variety of subjects, and in his book Pursuit he did the best he could with the sources that were available at the time. His account largely agrees with the book Battleship Bismarck by Baron Burkhard von Mullenheim-Rechberg, who was the surviving fourth gunnery officer of Bismarck, and who witnessed the battle through his optical rangefinder. Admittedly both of these books were written long ago, and we have a lot more information available to us nowadays, especially since the wrecks of Bismarck and Hood have been found. The fact is that unless we are able to travel back in time nobody will ever know exactly what happened, but I’m confident that Ludovic Kennedy’s account is fundamentally accurate and was written with the aim of presenting the best facts he had to work with at the time. Pursuit is a well-written and well-intentioned book about the hunt for the Bismarck, and if you have not read it, I think you would enjoy it very much. Have a nice day!
@@lumberlikwidator8863 that's the point my trying to make, no body will know. Let's be honest if both Hood and POW had both hit Bismarck I doubt even they would have known who got the hit
For all the resources poured into Bismarck and Tirpitz, the amount of actual damage they did is seemingly minor. Much like the Yamato and Musashi none came close to doing what they were designed fot.
Bismarck was a threat to the convoy network, until being damaged at Denmark Strait and forced to run for St. Nazaire.
Thanks for watching and have a great week :)
The Tirpitz accomplished a great deal during it’s career . As it tied up a large number of British heavies and the occasional US battleship . The British did not want the German battleship loose in the Russian convoy lanes .
@@TKM1951 The term is 'Fleet in Being.'
Indeed, Germany and Japan would have got a lot more for the money spent on those ships if they spent it on submarines, destroyers or both light and heavy cruisers. Destroyers and cruisers do much of the work of any navy during wartime and peacetime as well. Submarines also do vital intelligence gathering during both peace and wartime.
Those early hits by Prince of Wales in the Battle of the Denmark Strait were in effect mission kill.

Indeed, losing thousands of tons of fuel oil and being no longer able to steam at full speed due to flooded compartments left Adm. Luchens no choice but to make for France for repairs.

@@iankingsleys2818 He could have done that even though the Royal Navy and Air Force certainly would have been waiting to attack his ship.
On the evening of 26 May German submarine U-556 sighted the carrier HMS Ark Royal and battlecruiser HMS Renown. U-556 was on its way back to base from her patrol and had already spent all her torpedoes but she did observe activity on Ark Royals flight deck. U-556 saw Ark Royal launch the swordfish aircraft that doomed Bismarck but was unable to do anything to stop it.

I also read that if she would have had 2 torpedos left, she was in a position to sink both ships at the same time... Luck definately has something to say about outcomes in war.
15:57 Contrary to appearances, the smoke at the left is coming from the wreck of the Hood and the one at the right if that from a POW trying to put the greatest possible distance with the German ships.

@@HiddenHistoryYT Same to you, sir.
What we see at 15:26 is the explosion of the Hood and at about 15:31 the flash and the explosion is the forward 14-inch tower of the POW firing on the Bismarck while trying to avoid the wreck pieces of the Hood by violently swerving to the right as it was following right behind her.

One of my friends that I served with in the US Navy in the 80s had a Grandfather and Great Uncle that died on the HOOD. They were brothers.
People say the Yamato was the greatest battleship in history, but if you really think about how much effort went into sinking Bismarck, 16 warships, lots of aircraft, and finally she was scuttled after hours of bombardmant, and that only happened because of an extremely lucky hit on the rudder, and she was also hit by 4 torpedos and countless shells before her final battle. meanwhile the yamato made no major accomplishments except to get her self sunk on her way to a suicide mission
IF any scuttling actually took place then all that was scuttled was a 51000 ton mountain of sinking, flaming scrap metal. All guns silenced, her superstructure devastated, her main armour belt broken and penetrated in several places, her command staff physically obliterated, internally aflame from end to end, her stern and port gunwales already underwater, a thousand of her crew dead, and further hundreds of her crew already in the water behind her.... All that any scuttling did was to sink her a few minutes earlier than was already happening.
In the world of boxing the crew's scuttling efforts are what is known as "throwing in the towel", submission of a boxer AFTER he has been punched senseless by a more skillful & powerful opponent, and only a deluded child would say, "the victor didn't win because his opponent killed himself before he lost.", when the truth is the loser had his arse ripped off by the victor and handed back to him on a plate.
Imagine the ignominy of being forced to commit suicide by your opponent?
Bismarck took down HMS Hood with 3-4 salvos...it's a real good thing she was put down. Because if she had an accompanying aircraft carrier, or was a part of an actual task Force..and had support... she would've been unstoppable.

The Bismarck was truly a beautiful looking warship, if one can say that of a ship made entirely to destroy other vessels. Nevertheless, she had wonderful lines and was really impressive to look at. 12:41
50,000 AA rounds fired by Bismark for 1 Swordfish aircraft destroyed. Illustrates the value of the british VT fuse which had very good effect in the pacific in the years that followed, especially with the USN 5"/38 DP gun. ~2800 RN Battleship maingun rounds fired for ~400 hits was very high and speaks well of RN gunnery.
Appreciate you watching and have a great week :)
Not a single swordfish shot down by the Germans during Rhineübung... the only recorded aircraft loss was that of a Fairey Fulmar that accompanied the first attack on Bismarck from HMS Victorious, and which subsequently failed to relocate the carrier in the treacherous weather on her return leg and was never seen again.
@@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684hi hi hi
The Bismark had abysmal AA for a new ship. I have heard they relied on the 37 mm Canon which had a very slow rate of fire. Not even sure if Bismark had AA directors...
@@RossEphgrave Correct about her AA armament, She also had two quad 20mm Flakvierlings high up on her bridge superstucture that were unable to depress low enough to direct fire at low flying aircraft such as torpedo bombers.
She did have AA directors, they were the 4 spherical objects you can see on her... one either side of the bridge superstructure & two atop the stern superstructure, they were nicknamed "Wackeltopfs" (wobbly pots) due to their gyro stabilisation, and were supposedly technically advanced, but they were poorly implemented on Bismarck as the fore and aft directors were of two different "generations" which caused problems with their deployment on Bismarck.
Great photos and commentary.

Ahoy marinari
So many mistakes in this video: Hood did not hit Bismarck because she assumed the lead ship was Bismarck so was mistakenly aiming at Prinz Eugen. Hood didn't carry any planes at that point in the war so would not have had any airplane fuel onboard. At the very beginning of the video the narrator referred to "the HMS Hood" - this is wrong, it's either HMS Hood or just Hood. I could go on...
Better research required.
Directly from a British Admiralty report from November 1941.
@@HiddenHistoryYT 82 years on and we now know much more than the Admiralty knew back then.
Prinz Eugen hit Hood on her 2nd salvo that caused the UP fire on the boat deck. Bismarck didn't hit until at least her 3rd when the tower above the bridge was hit. Prinz Eugen may have also caused this also since her rate of fire was 2x faster then Bismarck. Yes; PoW scored the only hits that he described. The destroyer flotilla scored no hits. Ark Royal's planes scored only 2 hits, not 3. Captain Lindeman gave the "hunters toast" speech. Lutgens only spoke to the crew once; on the 25th. Victorious did not lose any Swordfish. More mistakes as you noted.
@@HiddenHistoryYTAlso, "Eugen" is pronounced "you-gen", with the G being pronounced like "gift".
Lütjens is pronounced "loot-yens". The same sound as the J in "fjord".
Love this vid. Though i think after you read Dr Ballards book, you might end up wanting to remake this vid a little :P
Why is that? Genuinely curious. This was created off of a Royal Navy 1941 report. “The following report is compiled from information derived from prisoners of war. The statements made cannot always be verified; they should therefore not be accepted as facts unless they are definitely stated to be confirmed by information from other sources.” So I assume there are some things that have come out in the 72 years since. Personally just thought it was interesting to get the British perspective from right after it happened. Appreciate you watching and have a great weekend :)
@Hidden History Dr. Ballard's book for example mentioned that before the Hood battle, the concussion of the Bismarcks guns (firing at Suffolk and Norfolk) caused the forward radar to be knocked out, thus changing plans slightly and allowing Prinz Eugen to take the lead. This caused Vice-Admiral Lancelot Holland to mistake Prinz Eugen for Bismarck during the battle of the Denmark Strait. There was also the error made by Admiral Tovey who wanted to take the co-prdinates himself of Bismarcks last known position and did it so poorly that, but for Ark Royal, Ballard believes that Bismarck would've made it to Brest.
Plus I think his mention of how alot of the co-ordinates reporting her sinking location being wrong and his process in trying to find the wreck are absolutely fascinating. :)
@@momokawashima9464 Ah yeah I realized after that I should’ve mentioned that the forward radar was knocked out as I remembered that occurring in Burkard Freiherr von Müllenheim-Rechberg’s book. Guess it makes sense though that it wasn’t mentioned in the source I used for this as the British still wouldn’t have known that information at the time. Currently looking to make a follow up video on the wreck/whether or not the ship was scuttled or not. I’m very excited for the Ballard books I ordered to get in, sound very interesting!

Peter Dinklage as V/Adm Lancelot Holland
Emma Watson as Admiral Günther Lütjens
Danai Gurira as "Wokundi"... the leader of the "Revolutionary African Black Power Navy" that had a small but crucial part in assisting the USN in locating Bismarck
The joint African nations drag queen ballroom dancing team champions piloting the "Fairy" Swordfish torpedo bombers.
And of course a subcontextual "dream / reality" plotline which culminates in African colonial sailors being violently raped by evil white British RN sailors.

Prinz Eugen had parted from Bismarck 3 days before Bismarck was torpedoed, And even if she had have been present & struggled to tow an uncontrollable Bismarck in the stormy N Atlantic, it would have been at such a slow speed, that the RN battleships persuing the damaged Bismarck would have caught and sunk them BOTH.

Why is the Imperial Reichadler flag displayed?
Probably because YT doesn't want to incur the wrath of the German government by showing swastikas in content.
As an aside, the follwing day after the RN picked up 111 Bismarck survivors, one of the wounded sailors died on the operating table to HMS Dorsetshire. HMS Dorsetshire did not have a swastika flag in its flag lockers and so the unfortunate sailor was "committed to the deep" from under the imperial flag of the old Kaiserliche Marine, with accompanying full military honours provided by the crew of HMS Dorsetshire.

Yep, a strong ship! Thanks for watching and have a great rest of your weekend :)
ideas that they could tow the hulk aback to Gr. Britian but were aftaid of subs. it would have been nice to cut her up after killing the HMS Hood
Appreciate you watching and have a great week :)
Why, if there was supposedly was a plan to "tow it back to the UK", did the RN insist on firing torpedo after torpedo into it?
Prince Yoo Jin, god damnit 😅😂
An American narrator. Like they won the war on their own 🤣🤣
Lol
James Cameron says the Bismark is intact
Thanks for watching and have a great weekend :)
The last 30 feet or so of the stern is missing from the wreck of the Bismarck, and so far has not been found.
@@daneelolivaw602 "intact" ? No he doesn't. She is missing the vast majority of her superstructure.... her guns all fell out of their barbettes after she capsized during her sinking, and her hull bottom is destroyed after sliding down the underwater mountainside that she landed on.

What are you talking about? i know the nazi ship is in a state BUT you can't see the hul, because although she turned turtle she turned back again and sits on the sea bed UPRIGHT, Cameron says the Bismarck is intact, i was pointing out it is in fact missing the last thirty feet from the stern. Thank you.
@@daneelolivaw602 Oh so now you've changed your assertion from "intact" to "upright"? That's cool. P.S what Cameron says is immaterial... Bismarck is FAR from "intact".
This is so inaccurate, missing so much, even getting photos of the actual ships wrong when talking about them. 4/10, 1 extra point for having the interest/motivation to create a channel/50min long video
Source is directly from British Admiralty Report in November 1941. Which ships are wrong? Genuinely asking as always want to improve things!

TBF, I wasn't exactly sober last night and I only vaguely remember commenting, sorry about that. I'll watch it again (sober) but 10/10 for dedication to your channel/hobby/side hustle.
IT'S APPARENT THAT THIS GUY WAS VERY SHORT ON ""IMAGES"", & LONG ON B/S
IT'S NOT SUITABLE FOR THE STATED PURPOSE, NOR ""PRIME TIME""IE: BOOOOO !
Lol
Not a good video. The photos and vid clips are just randomly placed here, and don't support or help explain the narrative. The narrative itself is good but your video production efforts are mediocre at best.
THE HMS Hood. The His Majesties Ship Hood.
Does that make any sense?
Just say HMS Hood. Why do Americans put THE in front of everything.
Sorry dad, I’ve fixed it in videos since these ❤️
Give us the BBC any day, over this rubbish!
lol classic Manu, I love you!
@@HiddenHistoryYT Corny, child like American "English" narration. 💩
We don't care
"Give us the BBC"? Why do you prefer your history narrated by disabled African lesbians?
If hood pow and the 2 ca attacked before dawn things would have been finished much earlier
Thanks for watching and have a great week :)
