Back in 1973 I met a US Navy Avenger Pilot who had flown missions in the Gulf of Mexico. His squadron sank a U-boat off the Delta and Navy boats that went to the area of the sinking were surprised to find that bread wrappers from New Orleans were part of the flotsam surfacing from the sinking. Apparently, the U-boat skipper was extorting the fishing fleets off the Delta for supplies in exchange for not sinking them.

A great example of n cesspit y being the mother of invention. As a retired Navy officer who had conducted many UNREPs as First Lieutenant on an AOE in the far northern Pacific battling icy decks and freezing equipment, I was especially impressed with the continued carrier operations in the very cold temperatures described in the story. The continued influx of trained pilots was something that the IJN could only dream of, and was a huge factor in our ultimate victory.

Room for people on modern attack submarines is not that much greater than it was on WWII fleet boats. Modern subs make much more fresh water (unless evaporator is broken). Food is likely significantly better, but when on a long operation, still store food everywhere, including walking on top of #10 food cans stacked on the decks. Life IS better on modern attack subs compared to WWII subs, but not hugely better. Much of what people think about earlier submarine life still remains. Just the nature of the beast, I guess. Now, life on the the huge ballistic missile subs (Ohio class) truly is much different and better.

I sailed aboard both USS Tusk SS-426 and USS Cutlass SS-478 that are in Taiwan service. My qual boat was USS Ray SSN-653. I was aboard USS Cutlass SS-478, CDR Dan McGlasson Commanding, when we broke the screen of a Carrier Group and had firing solutions on the carrier at 800 yards. Lot's of photos of in the cross hairs to antagonize the carrier group commander.

You forgot about the Moskova, started out as a missile crusier and changed into a submarime! It's still there in the Black Sea. HI-YA!

The attacks by American planes were meant as nothing more than nuisance attacks to disrupt Japanese operations; none of the aircraft had access to anti-shipping weaponry as they were intended as close air support for ground troops. The High Explosives could only do superficial damage without ever being able to sink those ships. The closest anti-ship weapon they had were depth charges to protect the landing fleet against submarines. They even tried those against the cruisers and battleships by dropping them close in front of these ship hoping to breach the hulls by the concussion of the explosion beneath them.

A note: the thumbnail shows an AI rendered “plane”. No such airplane existed. AI fail.

I gotta say, they were way ahead of their time on this one. That’s an amphibious assault ship. Same concept as the current US Wasp class. Every major navy in the world operates ships like it these days.

By March 1943 the crews of Beaufighter, A20, B25, B17 and PBY were veterans and had trained in skip bombing. B17 efficacy against ships improved further later. Nose cannon armamament of the Beaufighter was so good a heavier version was fitted to both B25G and A20G which though popular, arrived too late for most of the Bismark Sea engagements.
