I had a conversation with a lady 40 plus years ago she said her claim to fame was that she had a part to play in sinking the Bismarck. She said that she manned the cinema next to the coastal command in NI . A message came from the base asking for all pilots to report back immediately. She put the message on the screen and they all left. One of them found the ship and the rest is history. If she had waited a few minutes they may have missed the ship. It was a very interesting conversation

It should be remembered these seamen were looking forward to sinking merchant shipping, these would have been unarmed. War is a terrible beast, would they have felt pity for the merchant seamen dying under their guns? Perhaps they would have shrugged and said, this is war!

Did the British feel sympathetic towards the children and elder they tried to starve? My point is no one is innocent in war. Men go to battle to defend their country and families. Can’t put them down for doing their duties. May all the veterans of ww2 rest easy.

It is an awful tactic and long used Julius Caesar used this to defeat Vercingetorix. Is it better than what happened to Coventry, Dresden or Stalingrad, no it's all awful. If you took my comment as whoopie, we killed a few Jerries, you are wrong, it is the awful consequence of setting war machines on people.

Big fan here... But as a ex US Navy Petty Officer, I cringe when you pronounce "forecastle", it should be pronounced "folk-sill", at least that's what we were taught. And there are no ropes or floors on ships, it's lines and decks. In boot camp we were told that "ropes are for cowboys" and if we called a ship a boat, or said ropes when we should have said "lines", we would be sent to "Happy Hour". I once asked: "What's Happy Hour?" I was told: "It lasts and hour and you will be very happy when it's over."

Bismarck had a profound, fundamental, and uncorrectable (shy of back to the drawing board) marine architectural flaw that contributed to her doom. The marine architects at Blom & Voss designed her with convergent outer propeller shafts that permitted either the port or starboard propeller to drive the ship ahead without requiring any direction compensating rudder input which adds hydrodynamic drag. So perfectly was this yaw-free thrust balanced, that when she underwent her sea trials in the Baltic, any efforts to steer the ship with differential thrust had no result. Not even full thrust opposite rotation of the outboard propellers would produce any useful turning moment. And yes, this raised considerable concern among those engineers and officers pragmatic enough to see this was a severe deficiency, particularly in a warship. There was of course a backup steering mechanism and procedure. In case of damage to the steam-powered steering motors, the crew of an entire turret could be reassigned to collectively turn large emergency manual control wheels and slowly change the ship's direction. The problem was this didn't address the contingency of the rudders or steering train being jammed by battle damage. Without functioning rudders, Bismarck was without any "Plan B" for steering. While nearly all multi-shaft ships can be at least crudely steered with differential thrust even if the rudders are unusable, all that Bismarck, with her too-perfect convergent shaft design, could do was to meander helplessly without functioning rudders.

Then the comment was wrong. It was allegedly attributed to Bruce Fraser after North Cape. This, however, doesn't alter the fact that North Cape was fought in darkness, in the Arctic, in a storm, in December. The surprising thing is that, in these conditions, anyone was picked up.
After Bismarck was sunk, HMS Dorsetshire & HMS Maori began picking up survivors until the Captain of Dorsetshire received a U boat report.

There was allegedly a submarine scare at the time that the pick up was being made so all the UK ships scarpered. This is the official version (and especially for transmission to the Germans via other channels in war time. ) . Perhaps the story from the sailor is closer to the truth.

    • @dovetonsturdee7033
      @dovetonsturdee7033 Před rokem +7

@@F_Tim1961 The sailor who confused the Bismarck action with the Battle of North Cape? I wonder who this sailor was?
Actually, the facts concerning the U-Boat may be checked. For around 24hrs. before her sinking, Bismarck had been transmitting on a frequency normally used by U Boats. The British believed that these were probably homing signals. Indeed, Lutjens did signal for a U-boat to be sent to collect Bismarck's war diary. The war diaries of U73 and U556 actually confirm their presence in the area, as follows :-
On May 26, 1941, U-73 was ordered to help the wounded German battleship Bismarck which was under attack from British destroyers. On the night of May 26 U-73 spotted star shells that illuminated Bismarck and also saw the Bismarck firing her guns. But U-73 was unable to attack the destroyers due to Force 7 to 9 winds. U-73 reported the Bismarck's position to Group West but the positions proved inaccurate. U-73 then returned to port in France.
Also on 26 May, during his homebound voyage, and ten days before his 26th birthday, Wohlfahrt, commander of U556, responded to a call for all U-boats in the Bay of Biscay to support the German battleship Bismarck's increasingly deteriorating position. The aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal, and battlecruiser Renown had a lucky escape during the night, unaware they had come within firing range of Wohlfarth's U-556, which had, however, already fired off all its torpedoes. This was particularly galling for Wohlfahrt, as U-556 and Bismarck had exercised together in the Baltic, and as Wohlfarth had jokingly created a Certificate of Sponsorship, promising to protect the Bismarck. U-556 continued to shadow the British forces, reporting their position and guiding other U-boats to the area. Wohlfarth witnessed the night battles between Bismarck and British destroyers.
So, there were two boats in the area. U73 even later picked up Bismarck survivors. What would you suggest Captain Martin should have done when passed a U-boat alert by his officer of the watch? Simply stayed in the area, trusting to the humanitarian instincts of the boat's commander, or acted as any competent commander of the time would have done, by putting the safety of his ship and her crew of 700 or so first?

Hollywood are currently writing a script telling how the USN mercilessly hunted down and sank the Bismarck. The script will then have to be passed by the corporate globalist "woke" executives now in charge of Hollywood, for all the usual "additions" to help "modern audiences" understand how the "real events" unfolded.
      Chiwetel Ejiofor as Winston Churchill
Peter Dinklage as V/Adm Lancelot Holland
Emma Watson as Admiral Günther Lütjens
Danai Gurira as "Wokundi"... the leader of the "Revolutionary African Black Power Navy" that had a small but crucial part in assisting the USN in locating Bismarck
The joint African nations drag queen ballroom dancing team champions piloting the "Fairy" Swordfish torpedo bombers.
And of course a subcontextual "dream / reality" plotline which culminates in African colonial sailors being violently raped by evil white British RN sailors.
Of course all the above is purely for the sake of historical accuracy.

IF any scuttling actually took place then all that was scuttled was a 51000 ton mountain of sinking, flaming scrap metal. All guns silenced, her superstructure devastated, her main armour belt broken and penetrated in several places, her command staff physically obliterated, internally aflame from end to end, her stern and port gunwales already underwater, a thousand of her crew dead, and further hundreds of her crew already in the water behind her.... All that any scuttling did was to sink her a few minutes earlier than was already happening.
In the world of boxing the crew's scuttling efforts are what is known as "throwing in the towel", submission of a boxer AFTER he has been punched senseless by a more skillful & powerful opponent, and only a deluded child would say, "the victor didn't win because his opponent killed himself before he lost.", when the truth is the loser had his arse ripped off by the victor and handed back to him on a plate.
Imagine the ignominy of being forced to commit suicide by your opponent?
