  • A discussion and review of James Flower's video essay The Final Game of Death (2023) courtesy of the recently released Arrow Video 4K UHD box-set as well as my overall thoughts and recollections on the Lee's unfinished project, Game of Death.
With up to now just under 50 minutes of assembled footage, is there enough to conclude that it could have been Lee's greatest filmic achievement?

Nobody talks about how Kareem was basically handicap and disabled. But he didn’t let that stop him from being the top unknown fighter. Kareem could not have tons of light shining on his eyes. The light ruined his eyes. And that’s what happened to him at the end. The dark shades helped Kareem until Bruce Lee figured it out and destroyed him.

I watched it last week, I went through the Arrow box set and didn't want to see reviews or spoilers ect.. wow the picture quality on the final cut is something, love the way they did the titles with the Asian soundtrack instead of John Barry. Imagine if they had this shown in the cinemas in the 70s going up against the released Game of Death lol

Yep, 1st level I believe was supposed to be guarded by Grandmaster Whang In-SIk. I think the focus was supposed to be on Taekwondo as GrandMaster Han Jae Ji was I think the Hapkido expert. This is my understanding and apologies if I got it wrong!

@@reel_reflections- Watched The Final Game of Death followed by Game of Death Redux last night. Enjoyed both. The video quality of the former by Arrow Video was excellent.

    Well...
I can always go back and edit the 40 or so minutes of Bruce's scenes in Longstreet together with the 40 minutes of Game of Death for a customized version of a new Bruce Lee film.

Another excellent discussion video, I really want to watch that disc now. Thank you for your enlightening series on Bruce Lee. Please do continue with your film discussions. I am sure there is so much reel reflections that can follow. I look forward to having my understanding challenged and being informed across many other film genres, both classics and modern.

Thank you again @RobinYoulton. I'll be doing some of William Friedkin's films next to commemorate his passing and also starting a new series so stay tuned! I'm glad you find value in the videos too!

I think I heard from one of Lee's past students that Bruce Lee wanted him to be in that movie from a video clip I saw a few years ago . And I believe on one of the first 2 Levels of the 5 Level Pagoda , He was going to use Wing Chun Kung Fu , but he really didn't want to, he insisted that Bruce Lee get someone else , and that he felt like that he would be to slow , and there was also in one of those 2 first Levels , another Kung Fu system i think the Praying Mantis Kung Fu style, but what we hear and what is true is 2 different things .

Yeah I've read Taky Kimura wasn't that confident in his abilities and tried to talk Bruce out of it, second floor is what I read. From Little's book on GoD I believe.

If I had to guess, knowing Bruce like I do lol. The so called "treasure" at the top was going to be enlightenment. IE because you were good enough to make it to the top via adaptability, persistence, skill and so forth you'd then have already gained more philosophical knowledge and accomplishment, thus the treasure. So ironically the crime bosses wouldn't of course experienced that nor get any physical reward/treasure haha :)

Their dub of it is absolutely garbage and removes the inner dialogue that he has to understand his opponents. A Warriors Journey version is still the best.

Good point, I did prefer the Japanese dub the best from what I can recall anyway. I don't recall the inner monologues being removed though?
