J. S. Bach: Erbarme dich mein, O Herre Gott BWV 721 Robert Hovencamp, organist Dobson Organ IV / 105 Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Los Angeles, California Live performance 2013
Just as much as I find the beauty of this piece to be almost unbearable, I am saddened by the sight of all these empty chairs. What cheers me up are 22821 views of this video!
Thank you, Stefan. In all fairness, the chairs you refer to are the area behind the altar, where no one sits for organ recitals. The recitals at OLA are pretty well attended. Thanks again! R
I feel the Holy Spirit falling down on me I feel the presence of the Holy Ghost coming from you whatever mighty God we serve blessing holy name and playing a beautiful Oregon and I feel the anointing of the Holy Spirit
This feels like that moment when you just get tired of trying in life and realize how actually life continues in harmony because the universe is perfect so you just relax and think how everything could go wrong if you continue to worry so you just follow the harmony. I'm so grateful for this. Thank you for allowing me experience this masterpiece means a lot to me. I'm lucky to have access to this!
To me this piece brings to mind the biblical text "Forgive them, Father, for they do not know what they do." I know the chorale is not related to that piece, but it invokes that emotion to me
Glad to have chances on this soothing recording. I recently studied this piece and never tire of it. Magnificent playing on a favorite instrument. Loved the tempo and registration.
Bravo pour cette très belle interprétation de ce si joli choral...très beau jeu de main gauche...c'est superbe ! j'espère un jour pouvoir le jouer comme vous !
Very much like the LH chords, less choppy here than in another recording, and the melody reed and trem, as someone else commented. Played it this morning, Lent 1, same tempo.
This is one of my favorite organ chorales, which I have performed both on the organ and in adaptation for piano. Bach was known for his arrangements (usually improvements) of some of Vivaldi's works. Could this piece be an extension of that practice? More specifically, could the speculation that S. 721 was not originally an organ piece stem from its character as something similar to a stereotypical Vivaldi slow movement with a soprano cantus firmus superimposed?
Thank You. I've not heard that about this particular chorale prelude, but given Bach's penchant for transcribing and rearranging his own material, it would not be surprising.
Perfect tempo rightly according to the text: Johann Hermann Schein (1586-1630) Erbarm' Dich mein, o Herre Gott, Have Thou mercy on me, o Lord God, nach Deiner großen Barmherzigkeit, after Thy great lovingkindness, wasch ab, mach rein mein Misetat. wash me, make clean my Miseeds. Ich erkenn mein Sünd und ist mir leid, I know my Sin and it is sorrow to me allein ich Dir gesündiget hab; alone to Thee have I sinned das ist wider mich stetiglich, that is against me standing das Best vor dir mag nicht bestahn, the Best before Thee can not stand Du bleibst gerecht, ob Du urteilest mich. Thou remainest righteous, though Thou condemnest me. see all 5 verses, German & Enlish at matthaeusglyptes.blogspot.com/2009/11/erbarm-dich-mein-o-herre-gott.html
I was listening to another performance of this that was far too rushed, ~5' and mentioned this performance as a standard for appropriate performance timing, not less than six minutes if one takes the text seriously as Bach did and required. How can one be serious about asking God for mercy if one REFUSES to take the TIME, TIME being the only real way one can see a genuine spelling of LOVE!

Beautiful.. 🙂 It's unbelievable how few people actually know or even try to listen to this kind of music. They are really missing out on something.
To me this piece brings to mind the biblical text "Forgive them, Father, for they do not know what they do." I know the chorale is not related to that piece, but it invokes that emotion to me
Beautifully serene rendition. Thanks so much!

Wonderful! What a deep understanding of the soul of J.S. Bach and his natural faith!

It is so calming and contemplative. The melody has it's heights and downs just like human life. Thank you again for this sublime interpretation!

Very good registration and tempo, awesome.
Thank you!
Mooie versie!
Dank U!
Truly, truly beautifull, perfect tempo, with this tremolo Oboe (or Hautbois) giving it a romantic character, yet humble and serious.
Thank you for your continued support!
Very much like the LH chords, less choppy here than in another recording, and the melody reed and trem, as someone else commented. Played it this morning, Lent 1, same tempo.
Thanks Elizabeth. I played it twice on Wednesday :-)
This is one of my favorite organ chorales, which I have performed both on the organ and in adaptation for piano. Bach was known for his arrangements (usually improvements) of some of Vivaldi's works. Where can I find the piano version? Could you send it to me? Michael pianotroubadour@gmail.com. I love this piece!
@@MichaelHoltVideos try Imslp. It has a piano arrangement.
5 dissenters to date. Father forgive them. They know not...
Nice! What do you think of speculation that this was not originally an organ piece?
Thank You. I've not heard that about this particular chorale prelude, but given Bach's penchant for transcribing and rearranging his own material, it would not be surprising.
Perfect tempo rightly according to the text:
Johann Hermann Schein (1586-1630)
Erbarm' Dich mein, o Herre Gott,
Have Thou mercy on me, o Lord God,
nach Deiner großen Barmherzigkeit,
after Thy great lovingkindness,
wasch ab, mach rein mein Misetat.
wash me, make clean my Miseeds.
Ich erkenn mein Sünd und ist mir leid,
I know my Sin and it is sorrow to me
allein ich Dir gesündiget hab;
alone to Thee have I sinned
das ist wider mich stetiglich,
that is against me standing
das Best vor dir mag nicht bestahn,
the Best before Thee can not stand
Du bleibst gerecht, ob Du urteilest mich.
Thou remainest righteous, though Thou condemnest me.
