I live in the town that Kobe went to High School … I was in my 20's when Kobe was in HS. The split was 50/50 around here about whether he should or shouldn't make the jump. Most if not all people knew he would make the NBA. Some thought he wasn't quite "ready" for it and college would better prepare him for that. Also, remember, back then most kids went to college for at least 3 years. There was little 1 and done as there is today so a lot of people were simply saying that he should go and get his education. I was one of the 50% that wanted him to go to the NBA - most of us close to that neighborhood knew he was playing with NBA guys and more than holding his own!

I saw Kobe in person back in 1998 when the All Star Game was in NYC. Dude was definitely ready to play with the big boys. I think he was 18/19 at the time.
I do remember Kobe's rookie year. He wasn't even a starter for the Lakers, but made the all star team. I thought that was ridiculous at the time, but he definitely turned out to be one of the greatest players in history.
He made his first All Star Team his second year (98 All Star Game at MSG)
