  • This is a remake of my "Building A Custom PVC Rod Holder For A Kayak" video. But this time I'll talk you through the build and use simple tools.
    Items Needed:
    5' piece of 1.5" schedule 40 PVC
    4 cross fittings 1.5"
    8 couplers 1.5"
    4 elbows 45* 1.5"
    2 elbows 90* 1.5"
    PVC Cement
    I can't fish without my Rocket Launcher. This is literally one of my first adds to the new Outback. The fit and look of this simple project is amazing! And best of all super cheap!!!

    Very nice build and I will be building one for my kayak... the cost however is nowhere near the $30 or so be ause just the 4 cross joints cost $8 each... I bought a 5' section of 1 1/2 pvc, 8 couplers, 4 cross joints, 4 45's, 2 90's, and 4 3nd caps, pvc glue and it came out to $94... oh and a 5 gallon lowes bucket...

      Agree.... I made mine a few years ago out of PVC too. Not sure if you took notice when we were fishing a few weeks ago. I set mine back a bit really because I have long arms and it is easier for me if the rods are not right behind me. Also because I left room for a cooler right behind my seat. It just worked out for me that way. The best part about making these is that it is totally custom and PVC is easy to work with. Great job in showcasing yours to everyone.

    Love the build and vid man!...inspired me to build my own on my channel...ive got a little tip for you for the future when you go to paint PVC, im a plumber, once you are done and have it all glued up...take some clear pvc cleaner(its a primer)..and go over the whole thing then u can paint without sanding...it takes the outer coat off and prepares it to recieve the paint better...just my two cents...again awesome build and video

      @MDLRFishing  Před 7 lety

      There's a small indentation on the bottom side towards the rear of the kayak. I've put her on the water overnight with 200 lbs of weight and no water taken onboard. So i'm keeping it as a spare. I'm still skeptical about putting all my expensive gear on her for a 10 hour day. But once I do a trip on her with nothing onboard and everything goes ok, I may start filming on her again. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!

    When making the reel grooves on he top of the rod holders, do I take a certain size drill bit to drill a hole first in the pvc and if so, how far down on the pvc do I go down on the pvc? Basically, how do I make those reel seat grooves in the PVC? Thanks

    • @MDLRFishing
      @MDLRFishing  Před 6 lety

      I use the biggest size drill bit in the set. It only has to be big enough for the spinning reel seat neck. You could also try using a dremmel and cutting wheel. As far as depth to cut, I go almost halfway through the coupler. Thanks for watching and good luck with the build!

    looks so nice but the only issue I see with it is that it kinda restricts you a bit from accessing any cargo in the back (cooler, or live well that is usually back there) I have a hobie adventure island and have a nice big space to put any cargo in the back and this would restrict my acess to anything in the back I cant imagine an outback or revolution that is much smaller. I think it woult be better if it curved around the back of the boat on my hobie it would be a nightmare because the rods would be so far away but on yours it would be ideal because your gear would be in front and your rods would not be too far back. Idk just my two cents. Anyways thank you for your service. oh and watch out for those carts wheel carts u are using that go through the scupper holes. They will be the end of your hobie. I had the exact same one and it made a hole right in the scupper hole of my (now sold) revolution. I had to take it to a hobie dealer, get it fixed for 150$ and I couldn't even sell it for 800 because no one wants a boat with a hole in it no matter how well its been fixed, without a massive discount.

    • @MDLRFishing

    This is good for fishing in a pond but what happens when you launch in surf and you capsize, even if you poles are tethered. and your in 4' or 5' of water? I think having 4 rods on board is not realistic in that situation and a rod tube is better, where you rod is below in storage.

    • @MDLRFishing
      @MDLRFishing  Před 6 lety

      Great observation, This rod holder shines during inshore use. I don't use it for offshore because of the probability to break a rod if I turtle going out or coming back in. A rod tube is out of the question on this kayak, you must have a non Hobie.

      MDLR Fishing id take it to a repair shop. they make color matched repair sticks. have them scrape out the stressed areas and fill in with fresh material. just how a crack would be repaired. really enjoying your videos. keep up the great content. if your ever in the Boston area hit me up.

    Why did you use 1 1/2 pipe instead of 1 1/4 pipe.
