Yes, they love to run but please don't make the mistake of thinking injuries are a given. Much can be done to minimize the chances of serious injuries...and sadly, modern racing wants horses to win early & win often, & that's something that contributes to problems...
I'll just say that the circuits aren't necessarily long by any means, but if the horses don't want to jump anymore, don't push them to jump anymore. Or this is what happens. The falls were just accidents (luckily not one horse was majorly injured), but the refusals were apparent and no accident by the horses. That's the que to stop. Jane McKay ... That is what they are bred and trained for. The ground could have been a tad more than soft, hence "stumbling and falling". I wonder if you are a horse rider? Done Cross Country or Hunting?
That is sad. Those horses must have been so tired after running for that long plus the wicked jockey beating the horse that had already refused one jump and thrown him off as if beating would give it more strength.
Excellent horses, that was not an easy race .Good stamina, training, jockey and foremost thought us art of life, which full of obstacles but slow and steady win the race.

I watched this in the past but while watching it tonight I didn't realise McCoy jumped the fence he fell at again. I thought it would have been the next fence to restart in unless he had refused.still bonkers though
i agree that injuries happen but in this kind of sport they are much more common because this is extremely dangerous to the horse and these horses start training way to young
I just want to say that I completely understand what you are saying, but many Thoroughbred's have gone on in their career as Olympic horses and many have won. My guess is that these horses were not properly trained for Steeplechasing, which caused them to refuse or trip over the jump. Either that, or their jockeys had them take off too soon or too late. But some Thoroughbreds just aren't cut out for Steeplechasing.

Some days its just a matter of getting round, and at least Family Business was able to claim that personal victory. The track was wet and boggy - slow going and physically draining. I think that was the major problem with why so many horses and riders had a hard go of it. Even so, steeple chasing is a tough and dangerous sport - thus the reason it appeals to so many. If you have never ridden a steeplechase horse or even ran roads and tracks in a HT, you have no idea of the thrill this gives - not just for the horse! Yes - I can say without a doubt - the horses LOVE it. I can see why people would think otherwise, especially with some of the videos online, but that isn't a clear picture of this amazing sport and the incredible athletes it has.
Firstly I am glad no one or horse was injured in this race but it's one of the funniest things I've ever seen , all the horses falling is just so funny to watch ,classic
I happen to like Steeplechasing because it's more exciting to watch then the regular gated races I think that in the USA there are very few tracks where they do it at that's why I can't wait for the weekend and TVG2 airing of the races from England and Ireland update TVG has changed to Fanduel and now they air International racing every morning
Yeah, these jockeys seem more like racing jockeys than jumpers. In racing the jockey can break his concentration, look over each shoulder to see who is where, get into it with the jockeys on either side of him, cut off other horses etc. and a racing horse just keeps racing. If a jockey on a jumper breaks concentration for a split second, those horses pick up on it immediately. If a horse refuses a jump, you can blame the rider.

What race IS this? Grueling & dangerous for both! And excuse a probably silly question but why are the jockeys all standing on their mounts for this kind of race?
why do jockey stand up in the saddle when the race is over? to stretch their legs? do their legs cramp up during the race? yes i have had several horses, but always wondered why they do this.

Doesn't matter what they're trained for. This is a brutal and cruel thing to put a horse thru and should be stopped. We all know horses have strength and stamina but to put them thru a race course with jumps, and so many most never get to the finish line and many will not survive this race is just horrific.
The ground was way too heavy as well. What happened to Red Radish? He refused and fell down behind the fence, he was the only one I didn't see get back up?

There are often horses remounted that have injury, and it can worsen that injury to the point of no return.

Wrong. Horses often refuse when they are by themselves. In the 77 grand national the leader was 100 yards clear. Horses often refuse if they see others refusing, hence why 2nd and 3rd refused. Also the example of Unsinkable Boxer in 2001 GN.
So let me get this straight. All but one horse falls, some more than once. Two get back and ride, they fail. Only 2 horses still going in the end....how is this any kind of worthwhile race? How is this at all safe if almost every horse falls! Unbelievable...

Can you imagine if bookies had an exchange back then... and allowed you to bet in race... the prices would have been all over the shot, even more than usual. Also, it’s interesting you were allowed to remount your horse and continue the race, or pull up and still continue, I’ve been backing horses since late 2013 and now it always seems a case of any pulled up or fall are not allowed to continue and count as a loss.
