I'll just say that the circuits aren't necessarily long by any means, but if the horses don't want to jump anymore, don't push them to jump anymore. Or this is what happens. The falls were just accidents (luckily not one horse was majorly injured), but the refusals were apparent and no accident by the horses. That's the que to stop. I'm not a person that wants to ban races or steeplechases or anything, but when the horses don't want to do it, I hate when they put pressure on them. And I also ha

I just want to say that I completely understand what you are saying, but many Thoroughbred's have gone on in their career as Olympic horses and many have won. My guess is that these horses were not properly trained for Steeplechasing, which caused them to refuse or trip over the jump. Either that, or their jockeys had them take off too soon or too late. But some Thoroughbreds just aren't cut out for Steeplechasing.

Some days its just a matter of getting round, and at least Family Business was able to claim that personal victory. The track was wet and boggy - slow going and physically draining. I think that was the major problem with why so many horses and riders had a hard go of it. Even so, steeple chasing is a tough and dangerous sport - thus the reason it appeals to so many. If you have never ridden a steeplechase horse or even ran roads and tracks in a HT, you have no idea of the thrill this gives - not just for the horse! Yes - I can say without a doubt - the horses LOVE it. I can see why people would think otherwise, especially with some of the videos online, but that isn't a clear picture of this amazing sport and the incredible athletes it has.

Yeah, these jockeys seem more like racing jockeys than jumpers. In racing the jockey can break his concentration, look over each shoulder to see who is where, get into it with the jockeys on either side of him, cut off other horses etc. and a racing horse just keeps racing. If a jockey on a jumper breaks concentration for a split second, those horses pick up on it immediately. If a horse refuses a jump, you can blame the rider.

So many races of this kind and all but one or two manage to finish. Is there something wrong in this horse racing industry.

They were all exhausted, hence why they all fell. The idiot below saying they refused due to lack of concentration, LACK OF CONCENTRATION IS CAUSED BY EXHAUSTION

You're talking nonsense. Horses CAN lose concentration *and be going well*. If a horse is exhausted then it would be slowing down. Idiot!

Wrong. Horses often refuse when they are by themselves. In the 77 grand national the leader was 100 yards clear. Horses often refuse if they see others refusing, hence why 2nd and 3rd refused. Also the example of Unsinkable Boxer in 2001 GN.

Jane Moore - The first horse fell jumping the first fence. Hardly exhausted.

So let me get this straight. All but one horse falls, some more than once. Two get back and ride, they fail. Only 2 horses still going in the end....how is this any kind of worthwhile race? How is this at all safe if almost every horse falls! Unbelievable...

Not horse owner, but before I saw the grey jump the second hedge I could tell he should have not been. allowed to jump. His body told it all. Damn good waste of horse flesh!!! Sad!!! Really really a sad state of affairs! All those horses did what they did due to the trauma happening around them. Where is the humane society when you need them...?
I love the horse sports!💜. But that should have never ever happened!!! I pray all riders and horses survived. But I bet not!😥

Can you imagine if bookies had an exchange back then... and allowed you to bet in race... the prices would have been all over the shot, even more than usual.
Also, it’s interesting you were allowed to remount your horse and continue the race, or pull up and still continue, I’ve been backing horses since late 2013 and now it always seems a case of any pulled up or fall are not allowed to continue and count as a loss.

This wasn’t a race for top tier horses, yet the course was too and jumps to high, shame this happened
