    I had the same problem with too much beeswax and am gradually altering the ratio by warming it and adding more Ikea food grade mineral oil. Beeswax heavy mixes are a PITA to apply and it can look like you've splashed a hot candle over the board.
    Another tip is to add a few drops of essential oil - i use lemon - when making the mix up to give it a fresh fruity scent.

    Wasn't expecting to see a cutting board video. I made 12 end grain boards last year for my wife's co-workers and really hope they are taking care of them. I found a 12 oz tiny croc pot my wife got works amazing for heating my oil/wax combo and it's really simple to just drop the lid back on it and let it cool until next time.

    Hey Ryky - is that a 1:9 ratio by volume or by mass? I'm sure it would make a difference. Since beeswax is a solid, I'd be tempted to measure the ratio by mass. Thanks for any clarification.

    • @Hunterphotographic
      @Hunterphotographic Před 6 lety

      Oops, never mind. Answer at 11:41 - heat the beeswax and measure by volume. Cheers!

    • @Burrfection
      @Burrfection  Před 5 lety +1

      i use the swan when i'm only using oil. for the mixure, i use the thinner viscosity oil, but you can certainly use the thicker oil for the blend

      I agree! I would like to see some end grain wooden boards that are slick. I find that any sort of stickiness makes it very difficult to use a rocking chopping motion. The only board that I've found that's been up to the cut was one that I made about 10 years ago in middle school, so branching out would be nice

    • @darylsol

      comparison of counter top boards/ blocks (end grain vs. edge, wood types vs. synthetic, etc ) would be very interesting

    Good end grain boards can be pricey, for those looking to save money i highly recommend Thai tamarind blocks. I have had 3 different sized ones for years and they are superb. The sensation you get when you chop on them far surpasses any more expensive boards i have used. I like the look of the Chinese ironwood boards too, but have not tried one.
    The Japanese use synthetic rubber boards that are also excellent, but very expensive. Some can be sanded down when they are showing wear, and they can be put in the dishwasher too Some sushi shops will make the entire work counter from this stuff, at a price. .

    • @Tremulousnut
      @Tremulousnut Před 6 lety

      I think you are thinking about HWPE/Polyethylene/plastic boards.
      HWPE/Polyethylene are the hard white plastic boards, those are for butchering/filleting fish and sanded down when too scarred. You don't sand a rubber board because the rubber is "self sealing" and most of the time the rubber is just a thin layer (with a core of wood or plastic).

    Have you ever tried using coconut oil on the board? I has antiseptic properties.

    • @bobkoure
      @bobkoure Před 4 lety

      You can use coconut oil - but use the kind that's super-refined. Otherwise, like other vegetable oils, it'll go rancid. Dunno if the antiseptic qualities survive the super-refining, but I'd guess not.

    If you are using that mixture on fasteners, maybe you already know that that changes the readings on a torque wrench and the 'feel' if tightening by hand. Fasteners have torque ratings that are, essentially, the torque required to stretch the fastener within its elastic limit so it holds tight like a spring but doesn't deform or strip threads. Any lubricant changes the relationship between linear and rotational force. (TLDR: adding lubricant to a threaded fastener makes it easier to strip)
    Sorry for the off-topic...

      I think it's a great example of that you get what you pay for.
      I've had thick butcher block boards warp when being oiled frequently on just the top.
      I dont mind that he stress tests expensive kitchen tools that are made to be used.
      He just took a couple of years of the board prematurely, but can run it through a planer like he said to refresh it.

Between sick kids, the household, cooking for the family and the dog, recording videos, making stropping blocks and butcher block conditioners, finishing your recording room and pretending to have a life, I don't see how you could possibly have the time to fit a sport into your schedule. Food grade label on mineral oil is a gimmick, pharmaceutical grade mineral oil is sold as a laxative, it's 100% mineral oil, same thing as 'food grade'. At like 1/8th of the price. A gallon should cost no where near $50, should be less than $20. It's $2 for a 16oz bottle at Walmart.
