- The online servers for the Wii U and 3DS have officially been shut down. So I decided to make this tribute video for one of my favorite games from this era of Nintendo: Splatoon. I was going for a sort of "sitting around the campfire sharing stories of the good ol' days" vibe with this one

I had a blast with Splatoon. The overpowered opponents scared me away from it for a bit, but being able to play it for one last time was worth it

There is a new jail break for the wii U called aroma and when you use it you can use the servers again ok n station and other games aswell. It's really cool!
also there's this thing called pretendo where fans using custom server or something to still play online
Pretendo is what you're looking for! No hacks required, it re-implements Nintendo Network so games like MK8 and Splat1 still work (with Miiverse support!)
The fact that Splatoon has come this far from just a little simple game on the Wii U to one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises is just simply amazing. Splatoon 1 is what got me into the franchise and it’s really sad that the major part of that game is unaccessible now.
Perhaps it's a bit silly of me, but I'll be honest, I got a little misty-eyed while watching this. The original Splatoon, as well as the Wii U in general, are so special to me. I remember participating in the global testfire as a kid and I was blown away by how unique it was compared to anything Nintendo had done before. The atmosphere, the music, the gameplay, everything felt so fresh (no pun intended).
I think you hit the nail right in the coffin about how Splatoon acted as the "connective tissue" between the Wii U and Switch and how it informed the general attitude and approach Nintendo would take in the future (for better or for worse). All the talk surrounding the Switch's successor has brought up Wii U vs Switch discourse, and it's been exhausting as a fan of both (though I have a stronger connection to the Wii U since I grew up with it). As you said, while some may have just seen it as another Wii U title to fill out the library, it really felt like it was much more than that. Instead of being sad and cynical about the inevitable and trying to cling to the past, we should appreciate that we all got to experience something special and made worthwhile memories. Then we can look toward the future. I think it's healthier that way.

The buildup to the release of Splatoon was one of the most exciting moments for me during the 3DS and Wii U era of Nintendo. I still remember the day of its launch; heading home in the car after buying a copy of the game, its Prima Official Game Guide book, and the Inkling Girl amiibo figure at GameStop, and just spending so many hours playing online matches and the single-player campaign until late at night. One of many memories of this game/franchise I will always cherish. :)
With Pretendo, this game will still be alive. And modding a Wii U is so easy. All you need is an SD card and follow guides and you got it. Splatoon is far from dead. The community will take over from here :3 if you truly love this game { I do too } definitely mod your Wii U and join us :3

I’ll never forget the time i played with my big brother on the battle dojo and the game with my friend on line with FaceTime. I’m just sad that I didn’t had that super connection that I have with that franchise today
Splatoon is such a special series, and one that I always wish I could give more time to than I do. It really was such a burst of creativity when it came out and I'm glad that it's still continuing on so strong today!
Thanks to Pretendo, I don't see this as a "goodbye" but nore of s "see you later" moment. I hope that Splatoon is populated enough on Pretendo to get matches in the future.
I still remember picking up Splatoon back in 2015 after getting a Wii U for Christmas, not really knowing what it was but knowing my one friend had it. I never would have expected it to become my favorite Nintendo IP ever all these years later. It was such an experience living through Splatoon 1 Splatfests, seeing all these people on Miiverse talk about it, and just being hyped when Inklings were added to Smash or when Splatoon 2 was announced. There were so many precious memories with this franchise over the years, and it all started on one failed console that never had a chance to blossom to its full potential. The Wii U may have not been a success, but Splatoon showed what it was capable of if it had been. It's such a strange thought to think that the majority of Splatoon players these days never owned a Wii U or experienced the first game, because I couldn't ever imagine enjoying Splatoon without having played that game while it was new.
I just gotta figure out how to get it without the need to mod my Wii U.
@@jorgezaldivar3113 while I would highly recommend just modding the console as it only takes like 5 minutes and is very low risk, they did just announce there will be a way to use Pretendo on the Wii U without modding it. They only problem I could see is that you won't be able to use your current save if you don't mod your system and move it to a different user.

Thank you so much for this beautiful, tear-jerking, warm, and heartfelt tribute, Nintendo Hero - you are such a legend and brilliant human being for showing the Wii U the love it deserves as well as this gem of a game. Wow, that clip at the start sent me 🥲 I remember that Kit & Krysta video like it was yesterday! Man, I miss the Wii U & 3DS era of Nintendo. 2015 was such a wonderful and exciting time. The build-up to the release of Splatoon was like nothing else. What a fitting time to upload this video, perfectly aligning with the final hours of this masterful game on the Nintendo Network... I believe I was in that final game with you, NH! What an emotional moment this is for many of us. Thank you for everything Splatoon, I will miss you with all my heart and soul. I remember pre-ordering you as a young boy in 2015, and played you for hundreds of hours and hours on end. The sheer excitement, thrills and joy I experienced from you were unfathomable, and I couldn't be more grateful. Split & Splat was always my favourite track in the game, and to this day, my favourite in the series. It was a pleasure to experience the final few hours with players from all across the world on the Nintendo Network. We squid party'd our way to the disconnection message, and will keep on doing so through your memory. You are a staple of my life, part of the encapsulation of my childhood. And of course, forever and ever, you will always stay fresh to me :,)
It’s astonishing that they got it so right first time out of the gate with this one. 2 & 3 are great, but gamepad features really make OG Splatoon stand out.

Wii U was the first console that I bought myself, with the help of my sister, sometime in 2015 I think along with Nintendo Land, Wii party U, MK8 and NSMB U. I remember watching my first Splatoon videos that summer from ZackScottGames and DUDE and instantly fell in love with this game. I also remember not understanding how the super jump work and why they weren't jumping further some times.
I played the second Global Testfire during August and my godfather bought me Splatoon digital edition at new years eve. I remember waking up 3 or 4am to play my first game online, then pretending to be asleep till my father went for work and then playing for some more hours.
That February of 2016 I had to put plaster cast on my left arm for my wrist due to sleeping funny on it, then having an insident falling in this hand and finally guitar made it worse. I remember playing, with the cast on my arm, the European Splatfest "Pokémon Red VS Pokémon Blue" (I knew next to nothing about Pokémons) and my parents cheering me up even though they couldn't understand what I was playing.
I also remember some nights waking up at 2am to play Splatoon on the living room while my parents where asleep and shutting off the TV, covering the gamepad under a pillow and playing it sleepy when i heard someone waking up. Many many nights I was going to school with 3 hours of sleep cause of Splatoon.
I also remembere watching countless hours of splatoon videos from DUDE, CreamFresh, Squids Next Door, Ryanatorand, Brian, Sendu and many others and loosing my sanity with the trailer of the first InkStorm tournament by EndGame TV! It felt so massive at that point!
During my last year at school the Switch trailer came out and I remember going crazy when I saw the new Splatoon! And following the news of Callie and Marie leading up to the release of Splatoon 2 and the disappearing of Callie was a magical moment.
And a core memory that got created just some hours back, I was playing Splatoon as a farewell with countless people across the globe. Last night I was on Dude's chat, and we were all playing this amazing game, lasting 4 hours after the deadline Nintendo gave us! I'm pretty sure that I played last night Turf War with a Hero so it could be you. If you remember a "Vraka-man" in your lobby, then we experienced some of the final moments of official Splatoon online together.
I love Splatoon! Thank you for creating so many fun memories and connecting me and others with so many people of the community. And as the European version of Squid Sisters are saying…

I never played splatoon one but my closest friend did and we started playing splatoon 2 together when they over heard me talking about it.
So without Splatoon I wouldn’t have my best friend which we both find amusing.

For me, Splatoon went from being an impulse buy when I was at a GameStop to the game I had the most fun playing on Wii U. I put more time in Smash and Mario Kart, but Splatoon was something else. A new, fresh idea with legitimately great gameplay and wonderful presentation and vibes.

To this day the Inkstrike is my favourite use of the Wii U gamepad. Having to fins a safe time to decide where on the map you want an Ultimate Pillar of Death is one of the most Incredible feelings you can have in a videogame
I never really remember Splatoon as much as I should, I played it a decent chunk back then. I really remember my time with 2 and 3 but there’s something so nostalgic about 1. It looks like a totally different game than 2 and 3 and the verticality seems like it offered more variety and challenge. Wish I played it more before the servers closed

In my last few games, we didn't fight. We met in the middle and squid danced one more time... I shed a tear, something I don't even do for funerals. Thank U Wii U 🩶🩵
Oh man this got emotional. I think I started playing in mid June 2015 at least after getting my first home console (only had handhelds). It was magical to finally be a part of a digital community and playing it all summer long during school break. My fondest memory of this game was during the first splatfest rock v pop, where I wanted to play all weekend as it felt really exclusive being the first one. As a young 15 y/o however I had to join my mom for a dinner with her bf and friends of them on the saturday evening. All I could think about was going home playing and helping my team. After eating and being there for a while I was finally allowed to go home and I immediately grabbed a soda, some snacks and turned on my wiiu again when I came back. I'll never forget my first battle against Octavio, that's imprinted in my memory as one of the most iconic battles I've played through. I'll also definitely miss the waiting room music, spending a lot of time chilling and waiting with that music flowing in the background and in the mundane makes me nostalgic to this day. Sad how youtube is now the only way you can listen to it alongside other battle tracks.
For now I'll enjoy splatoon 3 in my mid 20's to the fullest. Thank you for the memories splatoon.

Perhaps the mini-games will return in Splatoon 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 (and its dual screen). I think they were what made the immersion in the game so unique ! R.I.P. Wii U
I never had my own Wii U because at the time I’d started to stray away from console gaming, but my friend had one and I remember watching him play splatoon. He and his sister would get really into it and despite me knowing nothing of the game it was still fun to watch! I’m glad Nintendo took a chance on a new IP with splatoon, it feels like such a staple now:)
I know this probably won't be for some time now, but when NSO shuts down, and Splatoon 2 is officially gone, I'm sure what I'm gonna do. 2 has given me so many memories. Probably one of my favorite games on the Switch.
During my last couple of online battles, someone wrote "Thank you Splatoon" and "Bye" on the map, and going from that to the service discontinued message made me shed a tear I'm not gonna lie

When the first Splatoon released I remember my brother explaining 'turf war' and me not thinking much of it. Safe to say it didn't take me long to get hooked once I tried it, and Splatoon is now one of my favourite franchises.

Funny story when I was five I saw this game on tv this game I hated how it looked and I said to my mum this game looks so bad and she said you don’t know unless you try we went to town. She picked her up at the game shop I moaned no, we put it into the Wii U then I fell in love with this game, and eventually the franchise. I played it so much when I was a child. and now I’m a big fan, and I love it art style and mostly everything about the series
You have no idea how hard this hit me. Back in my first few years of high school, i only had the 3ds and Wii U, and lemme tell you, i played Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros and more importantly Splatoon as if they were a religious belief. And i'd post, message on the Miiverse as if it was FB or Twitter. Although the Wii U did poorly, I genuinely enjoyed it back in its prime.

I wholeheartedly agree. This game is fondly remembered, we grew up with it, and it feels like I'm moving from my old beloved house again filled with so many great memories. One note is that I never experienced Splatfests (and never knew how to do so).
Something about this one and splatoon 2 feel so much more fun than 3. I'll always remember the first splatfest and my awe at nighttime splatoon
Splatoon 1 was one of my most played games ever and I'm kinda down that a bunch of people didn't get to play this gem of a game
My first (and possibly only) Nintendo consoles were the 3DS and Wii U. We would typically get a new console like 2 or 3 years after it had launched.
And my first experiences with Nintendo games were Pokemon XY and MK7 (since we got the Nintendo 3DS XL before the Wii U) since that was typically what you would get a Nintendo console for. But when we got the Wii U we got it with MK8 (it was preinstalled on the console) and a game that I don't believe we had seen an advertisement for, you know I'm talking about Splatoon.
I'll admit that I probably have rose tinted glasses on, but Splatoon was probably the only game we touched for months on end, it was our first taste of online shooters.
And as much as I loved Splatoon, when I was buying a console to play during college, the only thing that swayed me from buying a Nintendo Switch was the Nintendo Online subscription, and the only other console I had loyalty to was Xbox, so I picked up a Series X.
I may pick up a Switch to play Splatoon 2 and 3, but that might be way later in it's life cycle. So I might just stick to Halo before that comes along.
And I'm wishing that the Pretendo servers become public soon so I can use Cemu to start from ground zero of Splatoon again.

Yea it felt so unique when i first played it. I played it as a child with a friend for hours and it was so fun, the internet was so bad we couldnt even play online so we played 1v1 for so long xD
I kind of wish I played more Splatoon than I did. I got it on launch day and played for a few weeks with some friends, and for the most part it was great! Truly an amazing concept to push Nintendo into the modern age with a bold new IP. I think what really took me out of it were the quality of life shortcomings that only Nintendo would be capable of. I hated having to jump out of queue to change my loadout as it often meant I had to wait around for my group to finish a match. The map rotation thing also really bothered me - how you would only have access to 2 or 3 maps for an hour or so before they rotated to a new set? I think that's how it went. Any chance of me coming back to Splatoon was snuffed out after Overwatch came out. That game took over my life for several years and without the mental bandwidth to play both at the same time, I never ended up playing either of its sequels.
That being said, lately I've had some desire to give Splatoon another shot because I'd argue it has a lot of the same values as Overwatch that I love. As they're both highly kinetic shooters, they have amazing movement, encourage map control, and flow so nicely with quick respawns. When I first played Splatoon, I turned off the gyro aim immediately and without a second thought, but I am way more motion control pilled now than I was back then, especially with respect to aiming after switching to PC for shooters. I guess what I'm trying to say is there's a pretty good chance I'll eventually give Splatoon another shot, primarily because there was so much to love back then that I think I'd appreciate a lot more nowadays. Splatoon has that quality of being truly unique. I absolutely agree with you too, it's the best representative of the Wii U. It's just a shame there wasn't much more to carry the load with it.
Great video that I'm sure will only age well with time. One of the best ways to preserve the spirit of games that are lost to time or change is to hear directly from the people who experienced and loved them as they were then, and I loved hearing what you had to say!
I'd definitely recommend giving the series another shot, thankfully now you can change your gear in between matches and the hourly map selection has been shortened. Still some annoying Nintendoy design stuff in 3, but it's been improved a lot overall

I got my Wii U late. The switch had already been announced but I wanted to play Nintendo games right then and there so yeah. I got a used Wii U that had splatoon pre downloaded but I didn’t try it out for months. When I did finally decide to try it I instantly fell in love with it. I’m sad that I never got to experience splatfests or updates but I still felt attached to the community(even though I wasn’t really). Splatoon is the only franchise who has changed who I am as a person. It means so much to me.
Let's all move to Pretendo in Wii U, it doesn't even require to hack the console anymore

You can still play online matches, you just need a homebrewed Wii U, and Pretendo.

My disability makes shooters impossible for me to play, but thanks to splatoon 2's global test fire & the gyro aiming, I could finally play & be good at them. I loved the test fire so much I went out and bought splatoon 1 & played every day until 2 came out.

I got myself a Wii U for Christmas back in Christmas 2020 because I really wanted to play splatoon 1 since I've gotten into splatoon back I'm may of that same year now since the servers are down I've modded my console so I can play on the remade servers and experience miiverse for the first time and the splatoon 1 plaza is full with posts and it feels like the plaza has come back from the dead
Maritime memory at the end got me tearing up a bit

Watching the videos of Japanese Splatoon Gameplay is my daily routine.
My favourite players are (Pineapple) for blasters and (Tiramisu) for Dualies
here are my hyper specific memories: i and my sister, that i shared the wii u with a little, always would paint all of the story mode worlds. like you with the totorial one. and the inkstrike for me also at first appeared weird, i didnt know back then that pressing down the joystick is a thing and would break it. so i actually never activated the special weapons in general for a certain time and even didnt know i had something like that. so everytime someone did a special, i was like: what was that and how does he do that. its like with minecraft, the best the game was at its first times of its appearance in your life. minecraft on the wii u is also my only minecraft i played, and i played alot, buiolding multiple cities that even by standards of actual adventure maps are good, and yeah. but thats not the point. i also remembered a series of irl dreams about splatoon that copuld be called a fan fiction. thats why i made myself a OC of splatoon and all that in ther first place. i actually think OCs are a bit cringe in post cases. but these dreams had souch a nostalgic and emotional meaning to me. and splatoon just over all felt so personal to me, by beeing a picture of a perfect world, not like our humans world. no war,k no hate, no politicians or currpted people, no real crime or anything bad from our world, and the most weird thing is: that we humans, if we all just would be smart enough, could actually make our world like thism, live like the inklings be as a world, like the world of splatoon. it would be theoretically possible. but only there tho. i mean i just wanna live in splatoons universe as a inkling. its my biggest wish actually. not having to live a stressfull human life. but now nintendo took my only splatoon game, that i have, due to not beeing able to afford a switch or pretendo or something becouse i am 15, broke and soon am going to a boardingschool. i always had a family that hated gaming and just doesnt get it. i geniuently feel bad for them to not being able to have been the types of people to experience this, feel all this stuff and just beeing part of this.

I just wish so much that I'd actually be good at the game. It's the one thing that stops me being able to enjoy it. In terms of it's identity and set of aesthetics, it's an amazing franchise. The grunge/punk, skater, crazy bright colour, sort of post apocalyptic (for humans) vibes are so individualistic and cohesive.
I just can't play it well enough 😭
