And a quick glimpse on wiki shows that non of the mentioned Madonna tours have reached the attendance level (avg or overall) of Jackson's HIStory tour. I'm not going to argue about money, musicians make more money nowadays on tours. It's largely pointless. As for album sales, I don't know the exact numbers pre-MJ's death but we're talking about 5/6 studio albums, 1 greatest hits and a remix album vs over double that number with Madonna. So Madonna's sales aren't very impressive per album. If you avg out the numbers you give then MJ was 2x as successful as Madonna and that includes reputation destroying child molestation accusations. Might sound like I hate Madonna, I don't. I actually own Ray of Light. It's a fantastic album.

Why has this turned into some massive MJ vs Madonna thing? They are totally different artists with totally different careers. Madonna seems to have nothing but nice things to say about MJ so why can't it stay at that? At the end of the day Madonna is recognized as possibly the most succesfull female recording artist of all time, while Michael Jackson was recognized as the greatest and most successful entertainer in history. Michael Jackson is still recognized as the most famous person (living or non living) in the world at the moment and has been for a long time as declared by many credible sources, like Guinness world records. Madonna is great, absolutely and extremely successful, but she simply doesn't have the same global outreach as MJ, which is precisely why MJ was named the king of pop. These are just facts, not a bunch of attacks on someones personal life and issues like others are doing.

Madonna grossed more in tours because she tours all the time. She's also released many more albums and yet still was outsold by Jackson, despite the mid 90's onwards being hampered by his legal issues.
I'm not a big fan of either really but, like Elvis and the Beatles, Jackson was iconic. With these sorts of acts you can point to truly great moments in music history. I can't think of anything but pointy tits when it comes to Madonna. When you look at other acts - the greats - you find more than than shock value. I love tits, don't get me wrong, but, speaking musically, compare and contrast pointy tits with Jackson's Motown appearance. Not really on the same level...
Jackson also wrote his own songs, which, for me, as a lover of music, is the most important thing. He also opened the door for black music. It's amazing how he overcame all the societal and music industry bigotry, climbing all the way to the top.

I'm not going to argue about money, musicians make more money nowadays on tours. It's largely pointless.
As for album sales, I don't know the exact numbers pre-MJ's death but we're talking about 5/6 studio albums, 1 greatest hits and a remix album vs over double that number with Madonna. So Madonna's sales aren't very impressive per album. If you avg out the numbers you give then MJ was 2x as successful as Madonna and that includes reputation destroying child molestation accusations.
