Over the weekend we rented a Kubota excavator to get some tasks done around the homestead. The three large projects we accomplished included paving our driveway with 3/4 minus rock, digging an 8' hole for the percolation test and digging the footings for our timber frame barn.
We hope this gives you some ideas on how to use an excavator on YOUR homestead. We were able to rent this for just under $300 for the entire weekend, or something in there. Enjoy!

38 years ago, I did exactly that. Same 6-way blade, levelled my front and back yards and smoothed out the driveway and the public alley behind my house, wonderful experience. In the last few minutes dong the finish-up, I backed into my front porch, broke off the hand rail, powerful beasts, great caution is required. Loved your description of the event, let the haters hate. Geez, ya just shared what ya did. Keep it up, I want to build a small retirement cabin, just for me and my dog. I have started a list of the jobs for the digger so I thought it was cool that you did that also. You kids are cute as hell and remind me of my wife and I about the same age. We flipped our first two houses with out making a buck then stayed in our third for 29 years. ( The value of which has increased nearly 5X). Your journey will be epic. I wish I had this sort of documentation of my experience.

A machine like that, used, with like 4,000 hours would still bring close to $30K. A mini excavator is a GREAT tool! Not only can you get a lot of work done on your property but you can make money with it later on. Capital equipment like that holds its value well, just take care of it. I have a video on my channel about what to look for when you're buying a used one. Lots of good deals out there!
There is a learning curve. Sounds like you got a good deal on the rental.
Kind of fun to watch you two work things out as you go, now that I'm retired and can sit back and watch. Jesse, I can't tell you how much it means to have a willing partner in Alyssa. Now do me a great favor and buy her a hard hat. I'm no fan of OSHA but some basic PPE will keep you both out of a hospital bed (or worse). It's going to be interesting to keep up with your project. Stay safe.
Renting has advantages over buying. If you buy used you may face really expensive repairs. Learning to be efficient with any tool either takes a lot of learning time or less time and better instruction. For most work I prefer tracks over wheels but I've never run a rubber track. My Dad was an excavating contractor so I grew up running the stuff.

For $25,000, you can buy a mini excavator with a dig depth of around five to seven feet and horsepower in the 10 to 20 range. For $30,000 to $40,000 you can buy a machine with eight to 10 feet of dig depth and 20 to 30 horsepower. For $60,000, you'll get 12 feet or more of dig depth and 40-plus horsepower
Nice video . I just hope people dont think that for 200 they can rent it to . Heck the delivery fees from all companys ive delt with are more than that alone.

I've been looking at removing some stumps and the quotes I've received make me want to rent one for a full week ... considering I can rent one for the week at the price they're estimating removing 2 stumps!! Heck ... for a whole month I could do my whole property :D lol - thanks for the video / confidence to DIY
One Kubota dealer near me does rent by the month. Renting is a nice way to go: no big purchase price, no need to get a trailer, and--best of all--no maintenance! My compact hoe has about 30 grease fittings!
An excavator with stump grinder head will be the best tool if you have a lot to remove.
Try more like $60K-$70K new.

Starting a homestead of our own. Love the mini ex!! Hope to own one some day. We are currently thinking about buying a Kubota tractor. We are considering the L3301HSTL or the L3901HSTL. (Then there's that L4701HSTL, lol but do we really need all that power?)
Type of work planed and soil type?
If you plan to move logs around you want something stronger then if you are just moving dirt/sand/gravel. If you are in rocky soil you want something strong enough to move/break the larger rocks you will run into.
Do you live in a snowy area because if you do you will need the power to push snow around.
Yep always fun trying to figure out just what to get as you will be kicking yourself after you buy as it is always the wrong one.
We are not 100% sure what way we will go with things. Anything we do will be no till methods so we won't be tilling or plowing. Any heavy digging or excavating we will just rent a skid steer or mini ex for now. We are going to establish several areas of fields mainly for wildlife habitat. Lots of deer and turkey here. Locally we have clay soil however our land has been forest for many years so we have better top soil than the standard in this area. Smaller rocks mainly. Very little to no snow most years. We plan to be organic and will be doing lots of composting. My plan is very similar to the "Back To Eden" gardening methods which is basically just a form of permaculture. Gonna use lots of wood chips as well. The tractor we buy will be mostly mid to light duty use. Time is not the big issue so we don"t really need the extra power although it would be nice, lol.
My advice would be to get the biggest you can afford. If you got the land, you will never have enough power.

You for got the most important thing and that is how many people know before I say it? BEFORE YOU DIG CALL MISS UTILITY TO MARK UNDERGROUND UTILITYS WIRES BOTH ELECTRIC AND COMMUNICATION WATER GAS AND SUCH. Oh and if you gonna be hooking a chain to it for pulling and dragging stuff if you don't know much about the machine best to ask where the best place to hook a chain so you don't tear something off that is expensive.

Oh yes, that's absolutely true. Plus it'll probably differ per country. They'll be more popular in countries like Sweden or in US states with large forests, like Oregon and Washington State.

It depends on where you are at. Call a local gravel pit or landscaping firm to find out local prices.

THD rental is open 7 days a week....most people that rent have no idea how to use this type of equipment and end up damaging it. when you charge them for the damage they say"i had damage insurance"...but that does not cover[as told upfront] does not include damage due to being unable to operate it as it was designed...case in point....renter used a bx25 to knock down old garage...you can guess how it looked when returned.
Rental Co, paid HIM to take this machine for the weekend.

If you are going to talk about being safe, you should have your seat belt on (3:55). The ROPS does nothing for you if you get thrown under it. I know some will comment about it being a flat road, but accidents aren't planned. Wear your seat belt.

Misleading title!!! That's the only reason he has people paying him for commercials and the only reason it's getting so many hits it's despicable.
After tagging it because of the misleading title, you get to have what's equal to a "let's all sit down around the fire and have a long boring 6 1/2 minute chat" about my wonderful project and I'm just going to talk and I'm not going to SHOW you anything with a guy who offers absolutely no information other than bragging about his own project!

6+ mins of my life I'll never get back. if you're going to do anymore videos like this try giving a basic rundown on the controls for those that haven't run a machine so they know whether or not to rent one and do it themselves or call an owner operator.
