We just purchased 5 acres of bare land to build our home and start our homestead. We would like to build our home using as much timber from our property as possible. We took a walk through our woods to identify the best trees to use for timber framing.

Just my two cents, but when we redid our interior little home, I asked our handyman to particularly look for wood with knots. I love the knots - they have character and we used them for baseboards and trim so the house had a Western look, a cabin look. It's very beautiful. We took a wall out and made a kitchen bar with all the metal black. it looks great with knots in pine
Cathy Anderson they we're looking for trees to make building materials from. Knots are weak points in lumber. That's why they didn't want knots. But I totally agree for furniture, they are great.

Really enjoying the channel. I have been noticing your videos while watching other ones that I watch all the time and figured I'd see what you guys are all about. I have now watch nearly 10 videos in a row from when you started a year ago. We live in Idaho and not very far at all from great property that would serve as homesteading land. I am interested in homesteading and due to its popularity growing, there are quite a few channels out there for it. I find your channel very informational so far, great job.
One idea I had about your "tree inventory" is to use GPS to track their locations and listing the attributes of the tree found at that location for future use. I know GPS isn't exactly a homesteading standard, but it would be a time saver.
The bow tree will be useful for curved boards. Else, use it for projects that call for short stuff, e.g. chairs, chests, window headers, etc.
Husqvarna chainsaw CZcams channel has a great video on felling leaning trees to prevent the barber chair effect. Is a pretty neat technique, releases all the energy of the tree at once.
Use a Biltmore stick. Is used to calculate board feet in a tree. Comes in handy when crusing a larger timber stand.
I have heard of hugging trees, petting? That's a new one for me.

Hi, I know it's kinda weird commenting on videos after they've been up a year but I've only just come across it! You mention right at the end that you have some other tree species on your property that are more suitable for cabinetry than construction lumber, have you considered treating them like a cash crop and harvesting the wood for sale for this purpose if you have no use for it yourself?
Do you have a concern for termites?
I can''t remember the video i watched but the video series was about a guy that went out into the Alaskan Wilderness and built a cabin.He went out one summer and cut down the timber that he would need and came back the following spring/Summer after the trees had dried/cured..I was just wondering if you were going to do that too.I'm just not sure that i would use green wood to build upon.
Hi im following you guys on yer journey,where you are the weather must be changing soon,are you hoping to have some kind of structure up before this happens???
The weather is definitely getting cooler but from what we've heard, winters are somewhat mild due to being in a microclimate. That said, we were hoping to have a barn built that we could put our RV in for winter. However, we didn't realize all the pre-work we would need to do so the barn may not be up before winter hits. We will do some "winterizing" to protect ourselves a bit in the RV. Last winter I think there was only one big snow that amounted to 12-18". If it turns out to be a long, cold, harsh, snowy winter, then we may need to make a plan B. We are fully aware that we may be caught with our pants down. The good thing is that we act fast when needed and are pretty good at seeing red flags before we are too S.O.L!
Looks realy good the choices you make. Did you see the Wranglerstar videos about mushrooming tree stumps to prevent logs from jamming behind them during hauling and using an old hood from a jeep wranglerstar (hence the name of their channel) as a skid to haul trees? Or did Cody from the Wranglerstar channel get those ideas from you?
We've come across a few of Codys videos. He has a lot of great ideas and projects. Sadly we don't happen to have any vehicles hoods laying around but if we did they also make really good sleds and we happen to have a pretty sweet sledding hill... Haha!
You can often get busted up and dented carhoods for free at the auto scrapyard.
+J. Verheulst MMM here in Idaho the auto scrap yards charge for everything, even to walk through the doors LOL. Building on your land, and buying land is pretty cheap, car parts aren't LOL.

Yes grid electricity is always an option but it would end up costing slightly less than having solar electricity only we'd then also gave a power bill... so solar seems to be the obvious solution. Although we like having the option of grid electricity, especially as we might want to sell the property one day. Glad you are enjoying our channel!
Once trees are mature they ought to be used before they decline from rot due to disease insects or storm damage. Others will grow
Or allowed to decay and feed the rest of the forest. If a healthy forest is the goal anyway. I know this poses a fire safety. Maybe boardwalks to each yurt that allows the forest to continue it's natural process. I don't want to sprinkle negativity, just creative ideas. No judgement on choices made either. This is all very exciting to watch your growth and learn along with you both :).
you build anything in Florida out of raw lumber and the bugs will eat it in less then two years even if you heat treat the lumber and hard and soft wood is not rated by the softness of the wood , but rather on how it growths .of seeds and leves

Ok, 5:51 A fur tree is ANY kind of tree that produces cones... (incorrect, that would be the broader taxon of Gymnosperms or maybe more specifically Pinophyta/conifers, but not just furs); 6:47 this is pine needle or the fruit...(incorrect, Needles are leafs that photosynthesize and cones/strobili contain the seeds/fruit). I was not trying to bust his chops, as I said the botany was a bit off, but it was a good video.
