- **This video was done several years ago. My thoughts and prayers go out to the residents of the city and I hope the recovery process will heal the city from this tragic tornado.*
Sulphur is the county seat of Murray County, Oklahoma. The area around Sulphur has been noted for its mineral springs, since well before the city was founded late in the 19th century. The city received its name from the presence of sulfur in the water. Tucked in the rolling prairie of cross-timber country, Sulphur, Oklahoma is known as the gateway to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. This area was known to Native Americans as "the land of rippling waters" due to the mineral waters, streams, lakes and swimming holes crisscrossing the area.

Thank you for this video. I was born there in 1936, and my brother in 1941 during WW2. Sulphur was our piece of paradise. We had everything we wanted including beautiful Platte National Park, the Belview swimming park where we rented bathing suits, and the Vendome. I walked past the Artesian Hotel on my way to school. A loud parrot was a resident there and greeted me each morning by yelling “hello girl, hello girl!!!” We had two movie theaters that cost a dime admission, plus popcorn and coke, for a dime. I have so many wonderful memories.
Our father had been drafted into the Marines and was serving in the Pacific.
Thanks for watching! I wish more people would see this part of Oklahoma. Not only is the town of Sulphur fun to explore - but the Chickasaw National Recreation area you can walk to from downtown is beautiful!

Nice story !! Question: what was the “Vendome” ??
BTW - I’m from Big OKC !!
Prayers for sulphur.
Damn! Having never heard of Sulphur until seeing pictures of the tornado destruction, I was hoping it was some methy podunk town, but instead it looked to be a cool, historic place where it’s residents undoubtedly put a lot of love and work into! So sorry 😞
🎉🎉 thanks again for the great memories Sulphur Oklahoma 💋 SULPHUR STRONG 💪 BLESSED
My family lived in Sulphur in 1950. My dad was chief structural engineer w/ OG&E, to build the power plant there. We moved back to OKC a few yes later. I am now 76 and would like to visit the town. The only bldg I recognize here is the hotel. Back then, it was a residence for the deaf, I believe. Lots of good ( and vivid) memories of those days!
Downtown Sulphur now a memory, glad this videotape was made.😢
The many tornadoes and flooding were brutal last night 4-27-24 .My family is outside of Ardmore was watching live.Prayers for all.😢

I agree - my prayers go out to the citizens of this city.
Is most of or all of this part of town gone, saying prayers for all and it was a pretty small town, may the rebuilding start and the government state step up and GIVE money to the people for all they have lost, business and homes
I'm holding the town in my prayers as well. I hope the recovery goes well and that the people hurt or killed have some peace in the days and months ahead.
The answer to ur question is yes the tornado has destroyed most of it.

@@WanderingWalksofWonderPrayers ain't really going to help them fix the place up. Cash or a broom maybe?
