Seal is a British singer-songwriter who has had many hits but "Kiss From A Rose" is one of his best. Such a beautiful song. Other hits were "Crazy", "Killer", "Future Love Paradise". He was married at one time to German super model Heidi Klum & had 3 children with her.
Seal is a recovering drug addict and I've loved, and heard this song 1,000 times and I never considered that snow as a coke reference. Brilliant! I think you nailed it...
I saw Seal respond to somebody asking him if he's saying "grey" or "grave", and he asked them what THEY THOUGHT. He left it to whoever is listening to decide for themselves.
Seal used to be married to Heidi Klum, btw, and you REALLY should watch him sing it live. Lovely song.

SEAL wrote this Song in 1987 and thought it was too "mushy" so much so that he discarded it until his Producer Trevor Horn got a hold of it. It became his first #1 Hit in America !

This was the title song for " Batman Forever" the movie and the video clip is with scenes from that movie. He started out in the late 80s, but not really discovered until mid 90s. Smooth sultry voice. He has burn marks on his cheeks from a disease, i think Lupus.

He is describing his life as a grave. A dark and dreary place. And he describes her as a rose on that grave. A single bright spot in that gloom.

He wonders if it’s a one sided love because he says my pain, & the stranger it feels. Rose on the grey could mean that the light he saw in her he begins to question it as now being in a grey area . That’s just my humble opinion but it could be a totally different meaning 🤷🏻♀️

Please do Barcelona by Freddie Mercury (Queen) and Montserrat Caballe (opera singer that Freddie adored). They shared the most beautiful platonic loving relationship based on their shared passion for music. He just wanted to do one song with her, but she ended up asking to do an entire album with him since she adored him and his sound so much and had such great respect for him. Even in her later interviews, she said the most beautiful things about him. It is his most exquisite performance.

this song is all about perception, to me it's about Awaking (to me anyway) beautiful vocals and instrumentals.
I always thought it was “grave” just given the fact that this song was the theme for a Batman movie back in the 90s. I don’t know what difference that makes, I guess just the gothic connotation of a rose on the grave. But it’s open to interpretation. I’ve always loved this song and can’t believe I didn’t get the drug symbolism. I’m a nurse for heavens sake, I’ve seen those large “snow” eyes many times haha.

If you havent already check out pentatonix cover of this song. It will almost make you forget about seals version. Play it and tell me truthfully which is your favorite.
The reason that the song is so unique and memorable is that Seal didn't know it wasn't supposed to be. Music is so bland and formulaic that someone using a chord progression outside the accepted industry ones really stands out.
