How I Make Primitive Maya Chocolate

- The chocolate of today is very different from its primitive form derived from the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao) native to Mesoamerica. In this video, I show the primitive process of making chocolate from raw cocoa beans from Mexico. You could say that my hut turned into a chocolate factory.

That was Amazing stuff there and sweet, pun intended, love brother. Peace be with you.
I've seen chocolate made from raw cacao on other channels, but never this primitively before. Most of them use a food processor. 😏 I'm guessing dates would ALSO make a good sweetener for your chocolate too, or stevia for a sugar free version. Hard to believe something THAT delicious is THAT good FOR you.😋
Not only is this guy entertaining, he's also very educational, and that is something rare in these times. Buddy, if you're reading this, keep up the good work, i'm a huge fan!
Thanks buddy! I really appreciate the love. More coming soon. I'm thinking of new ideas.

A true Chad.
His videos seem sacred in a way.
Chocolate is made in a similar manner in Jamaica...it is beaten in a mortar . Some people add pimento (allspice), nutmeg and cinnamon to it while it is being beaten. It is placed on a piece of banana leaf and shaped. To prepare the drink it is then grated and boiled in hot water and coconut milk and sweetened to taste. Add pinch of salt and strain....delicious
Literally the best primitive channel to ever exist. 10/10
Thank you! Thank you!

Long ago in school, I did learn about the Aztecs. I also heard that they used vanilla in their chocolate drink. This was very fascinating. Chocolate doesn't agree with me, so I can't have it. Those chocolates still look good. Cheers, Chad! ✌️
I heard from Max Miller that they also added chili in their chocolate, and I tried this once with cayenne in choccy, and let me tell you, it is a good coffee alternative if you don't have access to coffee for the day
@@boid9761 they also made cold cocoa with mais
Dear @@boid9761
Please kindly allow me to suggest that you watch the famous movie "Chocolat" (2000) from director Lasse Halström with Johnny Depp, Juliet Binoche, Alfred Molina etc p.p..
Amongst other things one can learn a lot about chocolate from watching the movie.
Best regards, luck and health in particular.
@@Chr.U.Cas2216 - good movie. Saw it years ago and agree. It has so much info on cocoa and chocolate.
I read once that a vessel with chocolate and chili residues was found as far north as Utah.

Awesome episode and also I never knew it got that cold there. That’s crazy.

I'm so glad I thought of making the mold this way. It worked perfectly!
glad to revisit this place. Thank you for your video Chad
Thanks for watching
I can tell your hands have been through a lot by the way they tolerate that heat! Great video. Just so happens making homemade chocolate has been on my mind these past few weeks.
I thought the same thing, when I saw that he placed the stones
My hands and feet have become quite resistant. That's the advantage of not wearing shoes and gloves. People criticize me for it but it makes your skin tougher.
@Chad Zuber It really does make your skin tougher. As a kid I lived in the country and mostly never wore shoes, gloves or any of that sort, my skin was tough. Now, not anymore since I live in the city, and wear shoes, etc.
Valentine’s Day coming up in February. A nice opportunity to make a video with a chocolate feats. Man I’m so jealous. Wish I had access to where you can express yourself like this in a wilderness

Ah. 🤝
Oh bless your heart. I can't stay motivated when it's cold like that! Your primitive chocolates look good. I like bitters.
I have an idea for you. I learned recently that jojoba is a desert native plant, native to Arizona and Nevada. It's used widely in skin and haircare products. Maybe you can make a primitive hair and skin oil.
I know a place in the desert where a lot of jojoba grows. The nuts ripen in the summer and taste quite good, although they are more prized for the oil. However, I have not practiced extracting the oil yet. That would be a good experiment.
Mayan chocolate? Never heard of this. Sounds delightful🍫
It's just an early form of chocolate.
Who needs Willie wonka when you could get your candy from “Chocolate Chad”!
That's right!
Chad you are the most underrated primitive survival CZcamsr, it’s a shame that other people that fake their primitive survival skills overtake your channel.
That's the world we live in. Whether it be movies, television shows, the news, politics, advertising, everything is deception, lies, exaggerations of the truth due to the nature of human response. People respond to bizarre, crazy, sexy images so that's what is made and delivered. Real life is too boring and people fantasize about a reality that does not exist but is presented through social media and all other visual media. Unfortunately I have not been able to compete with that and am trying to find a way to continue making videos. Please forgive me for not uploading much lately, I just haven't had the time.

My hut was also turned into a chocolate factory this evening. Thanks Taco Bell.

awesome. No comparison, but I made acorn meal and acorn flour. Very laborious as well. Thank you for posting
Yes, almost everything primitive is a lot of work.
Good to see you back at the old homestead. Chocolate 😋 yummy
It's always so good to be here.
Hi Chad, very cool, time consuming, but, cool. ;-) When you dropped the chocolate balls in the dish the sound was like pottery hitting pottery. Dense and heavy?
A mold! So ingenious. Enjoyed, tc till next time.
Yeah, the chocolate balls are very dense much like a ball of clay.
Wonderful marvelous Chad! Thank you so much!
Hey bro, firstly, I hope you've been keeping warm. It looks absolutely frdgid in the desert. Secondly, this is another cool video, I've never had the chance (yet) to eat raw cocoa beans, though I do have raw cocoa powder in my pantry, and it does taste as bitter as i'm assuming the beans are. Glad to see things are progressing at the hut.
Yeah, it's winter but I'm accustomed to winter here. Raw cocoa powder from a store will definitely be a little different than what I make on a rock but it's still just as bitter.
The 2 things uve made that I’ve wanted to try the most were the acorn pancakes n now the chocolate balls. Well done.
Hahhaa, the chocolate balls are tricky. I practiced a lot before doing this video.
Have you considered building an adobe woodshed? One with gaps between the long bricks, glued together with mud only where they cross over by a few inches so that air can pass through from all side, forming a sort of gingham checkerboard look, and then roofed in bark of course. Even though there will be wind openings, the bricks as well as roof will help keep the rain off the wood even if the prevailing winds blow the drops at an angle (presuming the access opening is on the leeward side).
Yes, definitely. I just haven't had the time but I'm going to be making some changes in my work and dedicate more time to projects out here.
HE likes some stones as well wiht that chocolate!!
I enjoy watching your videos, as it feels peace of living in primitive life.

I'm super happy about this episode food is not only there to keep us alive and healthy but in almost every culture we make celebratory food for sharing and bringing a community together. So should you get any company you'll have reason to celebrate and drink to celebrate
Food is life but as a culture develops technologically food becomes easier to acquire and control thus allowing more time and energy for art and culture.

I love the content you create... thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge with us. This is the kind of stuff that works when technology doesn't. Thank you for preserving and sharing "the old ways". Much respect from Alaska!
Thanks a lot man! Alaska! I've been to Sitka, Alaska twice to work the salmon season at the processing plant and one more time I went to hike and camp.
I really have an urge to sit in front of my wood stove and do something...maybe pound some sinew, or scrape my deer hide, maybe make TP from newspaper...but this whole working for the man thing really gets in the way of my primitive aspirations.
I totally understand you. I have recently had to start working for the man too so I can provide for my family. (They aren't into the primitive free life).

Firstly thank you for pumping out the videos we all enjoy. Secondly as a side comment ive recently got into gardening at the worst time(winter😂) and wonder if you were open to planting crops for yourself. Im in SoCal and assuming you have similar climate. By far had most success with potatoes, pumpkin, and dragonfruit. Either way keep up the great content, always look foward to a new video!
Good luck with your gardening. In SoCal there are a lot of crops that grow well in the winter, especially greens like lettuce, spinach, cilantro, onions, etc. The climate at my hut is not good for many crops. The nights are freezing in the winter so that eliminates most crops. The summers start out super hot and dry making it very difficult to even start a crop and then it becomes humid and rains a lot. If I can get a crop to survive the months of April, May, and June then I have a good chance at a successful crop. I tried last year and almost had success with the squash but everything else died quick.
@@ChadZuberAdventures I appreciate that even at how big your channel is you still answer comments. Love your content and thank you hopefully will grow watermelons this summer👍

hi man, what you did is similar to a very common candy here in Brazil. Called "brigadeiro" And it is made of cocoa and condensed milk. You are nice!!!
Mmmm, that sounds really good. I will make that. Thanks for sharing.

No sé. Hay que explorar posibilidades.

I LOVE your vids. I always find myself making mental notes of things you do so I can practice when primitive camping with others who enjoy bushcraft. I noticed you like using the long oval rock on the flat surface, might I entice you to the idea of a mortar and pestle? I promise you it makes turning things into powders very satisfying and keeps all of the material in a safe bowl too! Stay warm and I wish you the best!! 💪❤👍
Yes, a mortar and pestle is great for making flour and powder but as you can see in this video cocoa powder is not the goal. I have a mortar and pestle here too but I use this method as shown in the video because I'm making cocoa paste. It can be done in a mortar and pestle but it's more difficult.
@@ChadZuberAdventures Interesting. I never knew that. I figured the cold grind you introduced might help create fine little chunklets you could then turn into the cocoa paste. I now see why you're the expert and why I've still got much to learn! Thank you for your insight and the videos you post! 😁
