Making Delicious Fruit Candy for Future Food Shortage (episode s2.02)

  • The concern of possible food shortages in the near future should encourage people to at least practice techniques to store food in case of a possible shortage. There are many modern tools and techniques to accomplish this task but mother nature has also given us primitive ways to process and keep food for long term storage. In this video I show a simple technique to process, dry and preserve prickly pear fruit for future use. This same technique can also be used for other fruits such as pineapple, papaya, and others.
As usual, enjoy the ASMR quality of this video along with the beautiful cinematic imagery. Thanks for watching!

Last night a friend commented that "it's too bad we can't do something with all that prickly pear fruit in the yard" so I decided I'd like to harvest it today and then found your video this morning. I have previously removed the thorns by putting the fruits in a jar and shaking it but I prefer your method, though I don't know what your brush is made from. I have a small hand broom that I'll try and I plan to use a food processor once the fruit's all dried. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and techniques. I'm sure you will enjoy having a taste of summer every time you eat some of your healthy, delicious candy.

It's a natural response of humans to be put off by potential threats, no matter the size, there might be a chance of allergic reaction, or so on, so the brain's got hundreds of thousands of years of pattern recognition built up and wired to more readily react to outside stimuli. Once we've been around something long enough, our fear of it will generally fade away over time. For example, someone with a fear of heights starts working in construction, specifically for tall buildings, after being around tall ledges with admittedly few supports, they'd become less worried over such a thing. There is a reason exposure therapy exists, after all, be around something, you'll get used to it, whether you like it or not.

@Troll Hello and welcome to the comprehensive guide to making cocaine.
You will rule the world if everything you do is perfect.
The disclaimer is located at the end of this text.
      Let's start working now!
Purchasing or producing tropinine is the first step in the basic cocaine formula. Tropinone is next transformed into 2-carbomethoxytropinone, also known as methyl-tropan-3-one-2-carboxylate, which is then reduced to ecgonine, and finally changed into cocaine.
      Succindialdehyde.
      This can also be bought.
Add dropwise while stirring at 0°* a solution of 27.6 g of sodium nitrite in 250 ml of water over the course of three hours to 23.2 g of succinaldoxime powder in 410 ml of 1 N sulfuric acid.
Stir the mixture after the addition and let it to reach room temperature for about two hours, taking care to prevent outside air from entering the reaction.
Filter after adding 5 g of Ba carbonate.
To obtain succinic acid, extract the filtrate with ether, let it dry, and then evaporate it under vacuum.
The source for this was JOC, 22, 1390. (1957).

      Complete Succindialdehyde Synthesis.
      JACS, 68, 1608 (1946). (1946).
1 liter of ethanol, 67 g of newly distilled pyrrole, and 141 g of hydroxylamine hydrochloride are combined in a 2-liter, 3-necked flask with a stirrer, reflux condenser, and addition funnel.
Add 106 g of anhydrous sodium carbonate in little amounts as quickly as the reaction will allow, then heat to reflux until dissolved.
After 24 hours of reflux, filter the mixture.
Destroy the filtrate under vacuum, until dry.
The residue should be absorbed in the least amount of boiling water, colored with carbon, filtered, and then allowed to re-crystallize in the refrigerator.
To get the product, filter, and to get more harvest, concentrate.
Succinaldoxime powder yield is just over 40 g, and the mp ranges between 171 and 172*.
54 ml of 10% sulfuric acid is put to a beaker with a capacity of 250 ml after 5.8 g of the aforementioned powder is introduced.
7 g of sodium nitrite should be added in small amounts after cooling to 0°*. (if you add the nitrite too fast, nitrogen dioxide fumes will evolve).
Once the dioxime has completely dissolved, let the solution warm to 20°* and let the effervescence finish.

It was was expensive. Almost $2 for one piece of fruit. That fruit leather looks really good. Too bad you couldn't put a small fire, with smoke, to keep the flies and the wasps away, while the fruit was drying. It's nice that you have an abundance of that prickly pear cactus fruit. God sure provides us with great things. Cheers, Chad! ✌️

Are you going to eventually use that same process to use the dried prickly pear cactus (or some other) fruit to make pemican? It's one of the BEST emergency foodstuffs; it's a super food containing almost ALL of the nutrients and calories needed for a day in a very COMPACT form. AND it's also one of the "forever" foods, lasting DECADES, even without refrigeration or special packaging. All it takes is fat, jerked meat, and dried fruit or berries, pounded into a paste and shaped or cut into portion sized pieces. You can also add seasonings and such to taste; but just be sure to only use things with an equally long shelf life, because your pemican will only last as long as it's shortest lived ingredient.

I love this candy! It is so rich in flavor. The fresh fruit is great. Now imagine a concentration of flavor 5X greater.

Maybe you can run some yucca cordage out like a clothes line to dry your food? That way you don't have to worry about the animals stealing your food in the night time

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  Před rokem +2

It would work with a hanging clay plate but not with a net or cordage because I would lose many of the nutritious seeds that I grind down with the fruit.

I was surprised to see that you kept the seeds as they can be very annoying in prickly pears, but then it made sense as you crushed them. A lot of work but no waste. Tell us how well it stores in future videos!

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  Před rokem

Yeah the seeds are no problem after you crush them.

I don't know here in Africa, we just chew everything together. The seeds don't bother me much. I just think if you eat too many fruits in one sitting, you'll get some diarrhea (or so I've been told)
