You're one of the few vocal coaches that can actually replicate what they do and explain it and actually sing.
Except for the crazy low notes the bass sings :D
Yeah! She's legit
I do not like her singing voice though
I would love to hear you talk about Pentatonix's Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, a song without any lyrics, just "da da dum". They won a Grammy with the song! Avi Kaplan was their bass at the time, before Matt (the one in this video). I'd definitely like to see more reactions of PTX! It's really fascinating to hear your analysis, although I know nothing about music theory. (just a fan of Pentatonix passing through haha) Looking forward to more videos!
Ally awesome! Iâll check em out!
I agree!!!! They are crazy talented. Love dance of the sugar plum fairy.
Ally yessss
Ally YES!!! THIS âđŸ
I was just about to ask for a review on any PTX song with Avi in it. When Matt stepped in as bass after Avi left, I knew their was a quality that was finally described here as "R&B". It's so obvious now that it's been said! It would be interesting now to see her analysis on Avi because he brought a different tone(?) to the bass part.
There are many "vocal coach reactors" online and most of them just sit there and then sometimes say that's high or that's low. Now you, on the other hand, is definitely what a vocal coach should be like. Being analytical every single second, and actually finding things that we don't usually realize. Great job!
For so many years, Kirstin was kind of ignored, as though she was doing what any female vocalist could do. I LOVED hearing you point out the great things she does that make it sound like what she is doing is so simple. I think that explains her brilliance in a way. She's so good, she makes it seem easy. Which, as a horrible singer, I know it is not.
Susan B so glad you liked it!
Susan B I was waiting for someone to say this!!
To be fair, she did mature and improve greatly as a singer during her performance on Broadway. She's always been one of my favorites, but she started out a little less skilled.
She wasnât ignored tho, in a number of interviews she said she used to be a bit shyer and liked tht Scott would take over and preferred that. Just an FYI cause so many ppl say tht.
tamiera True Story! Her confidence grew when she decided to do her solo project. Iâm sure that her voice benefitted from that. The icing on the cake however, was her stint on Broadway! The discipline required to do that, has really manifested itself in this song.
Btw, the comments about Matt not singing with his diaphragm is good! I wondered what was missing. I believe that he could sound like Scott (he sometimes get mistaken for him initially). Heâs the newest member, but I know that with time, he is going to develop in the same way that Kirstie and Kevin have. Heâll do it quickly too!
lol "strategically chosen group". yes, chosen by god. 3 on top row were best friends since they were 8-10. They started performing acapella together in highschool
MinaOlenElla: I know, right? You read my mind!
CHOSEN BY GOD đđđ YEP
Guess she was just trying to compliment how good they work together
Uh the three in the back are not, the two in the back were but that girl is the new one
the girl is still the same Kirstin. Only the bass has changed
I'm no singer, just a Pentatonix fan, but I just subbed because I very much enjoyed how you did the reaction. I never thought I would learn anything from a reaction video, but I have, even if I can't use it. lol
Mark Bell - Ditto! It also adds to my appreciation of what Pentatonix do!
Please react more to Pentatonix. I love seeing vocal coaches breaking down their performances. Their performance of God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman on Jimmy Kimmel is amazing.
I second... this was probably one of their most immaculately executed live performances ever!
Thank you. This is so great to hear about their technique. I am always impressed by how they switch singers doing the lead and when they aren't singing lead, they fade effortlessly to a support voice. I think they do it both by volume but I seem to also hear a bit of a change in their voice placement when they are singing lead vs support harmonies.
David Wilbur yes for sure! Itâs just like singing in a choir when you switch to supporting in the background. You canât sing with the same intensity or tanner as the lead..that is what makes the lead well...the lead! đ€
The guy with the hoodie (Kevin Olusola), you might already know, is a classical cellist. He actually came in 2nd in a YoYo Ma competition for his cello boxing rendition (cello, and beat boxing) and performed as an instrumentalist in Carnegie Hall as both a cellist and a saxophonist.. Probably his classical training makes him even better at what he does in Pentatonix. He has also mentioned that being in Pentatonix has helped his development as a cellist... A very interesting group.
Please react to Bohemian Rhapsody! It features their old bass Avi Kaplan. Its phenomenal!
Yes! She needs to react to something with Avi
Wow, I think I'm in love with your reactions. So informative, respectful and genuine. It's amazing to have someone, who has a lot of musical knowledge, really break down the little parts of an artists arrangement. It makes you appreciate it even more. I hope to see many more reactions of yours, especially Pentatonix and Voctave.
In particular, I'd love for you to have a look at Pentatonix' live performance of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" on Jimmy Kimmel (I know it's not Christmas yet but it's such a great arrangement!). And the "Disney Love Medley" by Voctave, which actually features Kirstin from Pentatonix and her ex-fiancé, is also definitely worth a look and I would be so interested to hear what you have to say about those two performances.
are you kidding me, you need to react to more pentatonix because this is amazing. i love love love this!!! such a different reaction, your comments are so cool
Thank you for watching Pentatonix.
Front row
Matt is the bass.
Kevin is vocal percussion.
Back row
Kirstin is alto/soprano
Scott is baritone
Mitch is tenor/alto/soprano
They have been together for many years, & their voices have grown so much. Kevin has taken vocal lessons, & has put out some of his own covers.
Kirstie has been on Broadway.
Mitch & Scott have a duo group called Superfruit, & they have performed at many pride festivals.
I love how you broke down the way they accomplished their sounds.
Iâm classically trained, vocally, & I have such trouble singing pop or contemporary.
Keep up the great work!
I love hearing your informed analysis of their technique and stylistic choices, especially for groups that I listen to over and over like PTX and Voctave. Keep it up!
AzazTheKing thanks so much! Many more to come.
I have absolutely no singing talent whatsoever, but Iâm still amazed by all the stylistic techniques and choices! Looking forward to your future videos!
Tara you ought to try Superfruit. It's the two in the back Scott and Mitch. Mitch's range is insane. The three in the back were in high school together. Check out the Sing Off, this was the competition they entered.
Season 3
Tara, I am a huge Pentaholic, and I lovelovelove watching experts deconstruct whatever the Thing they're expert in may be - so I enjoyed the hell out of this! I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions from PTX fans - we're a bit...enthusiastic that way, and there are A LOT of great videos to choose from. What I'd love to hear, though, are your thoughts on PTX's cover of Kiiara's 'Gold' - the original is a very produced/synth-y/tuned piece, and the way they covered it with just their voices blew me away.
Anyway - thanks so much for sharing your expertise and appreciation with all of us out here; subbed, def looking forward to more!
Definitely check out Gold, it has a lot of Mitch playing with his register in pretty extreme ways.
You WILL get a greater audience now that youâve reacted to a Pentatonix compilation - we Pentaholics are obsessive!!
This is THE BEST way to hear a critique of what Pentatonix do, because itâs being done by an expert! You will only have to do 1 more PTX review and your subscribers will multiply - we canât get enough of Pentatonix! And I Love the way that you break things down. Yes, we love what we hear, now we know why! Thank you! đ€
Yes please to Gold
Man first time i heard their cover of Gold i loved it so much that when i heard the first notes of the original i stopped listening
Kirstin killed it!! She is my favorite!! đđ
The cover of Katy Perry's "Rise" by Superfruit is an excellent cover you should watch and give feedback on.
Yes!!! I came down to the comments to suggest Superfruits cover of Rise as well!! It is my favorite cover on all of CZcams. Chills every single time. I would love to see and hear your thoughts on it Tara.
I think she did do RISE
She did, after these requests were made. =P She really does look at the comments and requests. =D
The three people sitting on top are all friends from high school. They had another member who was the bass who left last year and the awesome guy in the polka dot shirt joined when the first bass joined. The guy on base in this video recently joined to replace Avi the original bass. What I am getting at is it was not that strategic in the beginning. They were just friends, but then they decided to compete on the Sing Off and they needed to add two people. They ended up winning the Sing Off. Anyway, the tell their story best on their own channel so I will leave it at that.
The beatboxer's name is Kevin Olosula, and he has some solo stuff you should watch too! Specifically him doing "Down"!
Now that right there is a vocal coach. Her comments are on point, constructive, and totally enlightening. She spots breaks in technique while giving genuine praise to portions of good technique. Keep reviewing, Sara... youâre a gem :)
I really love your detailed analysis of this piece. I'd love to hear your opinions of the combination of Voctave and Kirstin (the girl here). They did a collaboration called Disney Love Medley (along with Kirstin's fiancé at the time). I think it might be a good example of "pop" and more pure choir style coming together for a piece that is greater than the sum of its parts.
The two waily ladies in that video send tremors through my whole body every time I watch it. There's nothing more Disney than a G6 soaring in the background.
One of my favorite things on youtube đđ
She has done it
Yeah, it was like her second or third reaction IIRC.
awesome reaction. very interesting/educational... I would love to hear your take on their 'Imagine' and 'Daft Punk Medley'... fyi -the arranger for many of their songs is Ben Bramm. He performs the bass in a 4-part version of 'Smile' - you should listen/react to this... it is a nice arrangement (I was even able to download the sheet music for free)...
If you want to do another Pentatonix video, might I suggest "Mary, Did You Know." Also, another Voctave one would be either their version of "Mary, Did You Know" with the original writer or the Disney Love Songs they did with the female from Pentatonix. All are great and I would love to hear your opinion on them!
Loved your breakdown analysis of their singing. I'm not a singer, but I love the behind the curtain take on how to singers techniques are formed. You've got a new subscriber!
You stepped in it now, didn't you, Tara? Lol. Welcome to the world of Pentaholics. Anything, for the most part, that features "our" group, especially if it, in itself is phenomenal, is going to draw a HUGE crowd of us.
Thank you for your reaction and analysis of my all time favorite groups. There are a lot of little things they do, vocally, that I have no names for, quite a few things they do while singing that I don't understand why they chose to do what they did where they chose to do it. I just know, or knew, that I love the sound coming out of their faces. Listening to you break down what they're doing, and occasionally why they chose to do it, helped me to appreciate what they do all the more.
Thank you for this video, and I hope to see more.
MAN! They are so crazy on time and doing insaaaane rythm changes... Baffles me every time.
I wonder how long/often they practice for such a wide medley
I recommend you react to Cimorelli! They are a singing group of six sisters who were all taught to sing and play instruments by their mother. A good place to start would be their cover of âNo Tears Left to Cryâ by Ariana Grande.
I think you'll enjoy Pentatonix's rendition of "Imagine." There is a different bass in it (the original bass of the group), Avi Kaplan.
gryphoncompanion Yes! I think Imagine is another of their covers where the stylistic choices they made had a huge impact on the way the song comes across, supported by the choices they made for the video - the longer they are together, the tighter they get in every area!
Kevin has insane high quality percussion sound quality. Some beatboxers have crazy technique in speed, double simultaneus effects or unreal variety of sound/sample library. I don't have the qualification for making a knowledgeable review. But imho Kevin has an insane high level of sound quality. Almost like a Steinway of beat box. And also coupled with super precise delivery and dynamics. Impressive and also a perfect fit for the group where tonal quality, feeling and precision trumps wild special effects any day of the week. Just love it!
Mezzo Soprano(top left): Kirstie/Kirstin Maldonado
High Tenor(top right): Mitch Grassi
Baritone(middle): Scott Hoying
Bass(bottom left): Matt Sallee
Percussion(bottom left): Kevin Olusola
EDIT: People I was originally gonna put: Girl, High Guy, Middle guy, Low guy, and Beatboxer, but that just sounds weird to me. Also, Scott and Matt could both be the "middle guy" so yeah :P. Hence I put the vocal types and just decided to leave Kirstie because that is the easiest to recognize.
Sorry to disappoint, girl is no vocal type. Kirstie is a mezzosoprano.
I just put that because it's easiest to recognize.
Megaman Z Matt is actually not bass heâs a low baritone
Scott, a baritone? Iâd say heâs a tenor. Iâm a baritone and I donât have his easiness on the higher register (nor do I have his highest notes).
Kirstin is just the girl??? Go away!!
I loved your reaction! I think you should react to their 'Aha!' - Singapore performance, Mitches high notes are on point there. Also Avi (their previous bass singer) sounds great in the low beginning of the song đ
Your videos are really great! I love how much knowledge you have and how good you explain what you're hearing.
I really appreciate you doing these breakdowns. It has shown me just how much hard work, training and natural talent this truly requires of them. There are so many miniscule details that they have to perfect in order to sound this amazing. They're so much more than just five naturally gifted singers.
The bass player can change his jaw position if he wants but dont forget he has to get back to his bass jaw position and also dont forget he just came out of the bass position and into singing
Also how the mike is placed requires him to lean forward. Be aware of voice and environment.
Itâs unbelievable how she can pick up all this little things and subtleties. This woman is incredibly talented and âŠ.beautiful too đ
đ„°đđâ€ïž
I love when ur breaking down what they do. Love you taraaaa! đ€©đ
I'd love to see you go through their Sing Off performances where there's much more going on in the way of dance/production as well as their Daft Punk Medley. I love to hear your breakdown of these little stylistic nuances. You pointed out a couple of things I never noticed before and gave the terminology for the things I had noticed but didn't know what to call. I'm a very technically minded person so all these little technical sniglets are just candy to me.
Thanks Tara! This is the first of your videos I've watched and I got so much from your comments. I didn't I was missing out. :) I look forward to more!
Hi Tara, you are one of a kind. Thanks for what you do.đ
Even Brian Mays loved it and posted it to his Facebook page. That is high praise indeed.
This was so great, I always love how you give such wonderful insight and genuine critique, both positive and negative- it makes for so much more of an interesting and informative video! Honestly, your âvocal coach reactsâ videos are the best Iâve ever seen because you actually teach and give feedback and bring something to the video. I really enjoy your videos, and i hope you donât mind, but Iâve used you as an example in the university classes I teach of what a great critique video looks like â€ïž
I looo0o000ove it when you execute the techniques you are discussing, it's so effortless and points me to exactly what you want me to hear. Love it!
More informative and in-depth than other analyses I've watched. Definitely looking forward to future videos
You are incredible! I'm so happy I stumbled upon your page. I'm a singer fully and completely in my heart and mind only LOL. But my 10 year old daughter is a true singer, and we both just listened to one of your Disney critiques. You are incredibly gifted and listening to you is so soothing and informative even though I don't understand all of the terms you use. I am enjoying every moment of your videos. Thank you for sharing your gift!
I absolutely love watching your reaction videos.
More of these please! I love the breakdowns!
Just shared in my Pentatonix fan group - get ready for follows ! Great review and fascinating to watch.
I appreciate your videos. There's a ton of good stuff in them.
I loved your review and your technical aspects to the singers. Keep doing what youâre doing. Iâm now subscribed!!!
Omg!!!! You are so great!! Love your reaction and your explication. Also you have a wonderful voice
It's a great video! I've seen some other "Vocal coach reacts" but I think what puts you apart is that you really do break it down and most importantly demonstrate it for us to understand! Incredible quality videos! Subscribed happily!
Always lots to learn in your video. You're fast becoming my favourite vocal coach react personality.
TARA!! This is a brilliant analysis of the singers in this video! Look forward to seeing you hit 1K soon! You deserve more recognition here!
New sub. Loved your reaction and breakdown. Please do more Pentatonix. I recommend evolution of Michael Jackson. Imagine. Hallelujah. Daft punk. Gold. Among others. Cimorelli cover of praying. And home free thinking out loud/let's get it on reaction. Keep up the great work.
I just happened to come across one of your vocal reviews for Kirstie and Jeremys Disney Medley. I absolutely love the way you break things down and how you present yourself on screen. The way you personally reproduce the incredible tones and showcase technique while giving some valuable tips as well is simply amazing. You have a beautiful voice and a wealth of knowledge and skill. Thank you for sharing. I have subscribed and will be sure to check in for new videos.
Very impressed by your in-depth analysis on the group. Keep it up.
So much info! I especially appreciate the body positioning and breath aspects. Really helpful to see you replicate what they did and what other options they may have chosen. Tons of excellent detail~thank you!
OMG thank you Sooooo much. Loved it. Made my day.
Neas Nosraep awe! Thatâs so great! So glad I could help!
I love this so much! Subbed
I just came across this video and clicked because I love Pentatonix, but I'll definitely be sticking around! I play several instruments and learned a bit about music theory but never really learned about singing so I really like hearing your commentary on vocal technique and the different vocal stylistic choices. Already hit that subscribe button and I'll be checking out your other videos for sure! :)
This may be the best channel I never knew I needed to watch...love the break down style!
I LOVED THIS!!!
This was so detailed and very interesting! Great video.
I'm learning A LOT from your videos! Thank you for being so technical, and "nerdy" as you said in a Voctave video. We begginers can learn some nice and helpfull tips. In love of your work!
I love your videos, it's great to hear about technique!
There's another group that I love it's called Home free, would be great if you could react to them
Ring of fire ft Avi Kaplan is a great one!
MarĂa JosĂ© Delgado thanks Maria! Iâll be sure to check them out. Thanks for the tip!
And Avi Kaplan is the original bass for Pentatonix, if you didn't know Tara. His intro to the live version of "Aha!" in Singapore is gorgeous. I really appreciated your analysis, as my aunt, uncle, and sister have been voice teachers. Nicely done.
Have to second the recommendation of Home Free. They're stylistically very different from both Pentatonix and Voctive. I'd recommend either Ring of Fire ft Avi Kaplan czcams.com/video/0l3dsHCScxU/video.html or their Cam - Mayday cover for first listens to them. czcams.com/video/znoV5gND9g0/video.html
Like Rick, I had also been hoping for a review of "Mayday" by Home Free. So, I definitely second his nomination for that song. đ
Awesome! Iâm on it!
you should check out anti medley by superfruit or one of their other medleys, their vocals are amazing and it would b rly interesting to see you analyze them! superfruit is the 2 guys on the top row
abby batkhan cool! Iâll check em out
i dont know anything about singing but i found myself intently listening to all of your comments and tips and tricks harder than i ever listened to any professors in college...in a good way!
Loved this ! I honestly love watching people listen to Pentatonix, especially Mitch â€đ
Thanks so much for the analysis! I used to be a part of a couple vocal groups in college but have ended up getting more gigs on instruments (drums/percussion and woodwinds specifically) since graduating. I have really missed the high level vocal technique/analysis that I would be given/learn about while in school, and you really have provided that for me with this video, as I'm sure the rest of your videos also provide. I am excited to find this type of content on CZcams! I certainly will have to check out more of your stuff. Thanks again! :)
Just came across your channel and I am definitely here to stay. Love what you are doing! I know from our choir that lots of people watch songs of acapella bands like that trying to learn from them, and such analysis is invaluable, when you want to improve. Can't wait to see more of your videos. ;)
She and Sam Johnson really share their knowledge and i think that is the kind of content that should be the most popular on internet. The ones who actually allows you to understand more of things you love and all. I wish she had more subscribers. Hope she get them soon đ
Love your reactions sooo much! Itâs more of an analysis than reaction in my opinion, but itâs amazing! Your knowledge is incredible as is your voice đŽó §ó ąó „ó źó §ó żđ
The depth analysis is amazing, keep doing what you are doing because it's quality content :) new subscriber
You are just great. I love your voice and i can tell you're a great coach. Nice!
you explain yourself so so so so so so well. It allow us to understand what we are hearing and seeing.
Oh my gosh. I would love to have Tara as a Vocal coach! She is awesome!
You doing these videos on Pentatonix are my absolute favorites.
Prob the best explanations & showing of technique, etc.. Loved the "head" "chest", you demonstrated so others could understand. So well done. :)
I love the classical insight you bring to these reactions!!!
as someone who is not at all familiar with vocal techniques (I'm a violinist, not a singer), these analyses are fascinating and super informative!! i love how you critique not just the performers but also provide information on what they're doing! really really good!
I love the in depth analysis! Good or for improvement criticism, I learned a lot. I wanna see more. :)
It is so great to hear an honest, knowledgeable, and balanced critique of my favorite group! She mentioned some of thoughts I've had, too.
I just found you... LOVE your insights! Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant.
Please react to CIMORELLI!! Theyâre six sisters known on CZcams for their covers and their harmonies!! Iâd recommend their covers of âToo Good at Goodbyesâ and âno tears left to cryââșïž
Just subscribed because I loved your analysis so much. I'm not an expert about music. I already know they are talented but it's nice to hear the reason why they are considered as talented musicians.
That woman at the back is Kirstin Maldonado who sang with the Voctave for Disney Love Medley which you reacted too. You should see their EVOLUTION of MUSIC in which their Tenor made a really explosive job.
You have a beautiful voice! Also love your reactions.
Just stumbled on your channel and I gotta say that I LOVE LOVE how you dissect the technique used and just all your comments really...They're really thorough and I. Love. It -- can't wait for more honestly. And I would love to see you reacting to Thomas Sander's "The Things We Used to Share", it's an original of his and he is more a musical theatre singer (I don't know how to describe it but yeah). Love how you can be both professional and also gushing over each individuals loll, you got yourself a new subscriber for sure :D.
I love this reaction! I'm such a huge fan of Pentatonix but I know practically nothing about music terminology or singing techniques so I love how you explained all the techniques they were doing. I hope you'll react to more stuff by Pentatonix/Superfruit! Just subscribed!
Iâd love to see your reaction to other pentatonix videos!
From a purely informational standpoint, I'm eager to follow you and what you produce.
Really cool insight from a very educated standpoint :)
Keep doing this vĂdeos! Thanks you!
Wow! I really enjoyed thos reaction, I would love to see more of you reacting to Pentatonix or Superfruit â€
its so nice to hear about the vocal techniques they use! im obsessed w ptx but i cant point out those details. Very interesting and fun to watch, would love for you to react to Pentatonixâ whistle notes, there are tons of compilation on CZcams!
Love this video!
Thereâs a lot of vocal coaches doing reaction videos but youâre one of the very few that shows that theyâre actually knowledgeable. Subbed
That was wonderful! Iâve watched a lot of Pentatonix reactions but it is truly fascinating to watch a professional critique them. Please keep doing these reactions. Your insight is very educational. If you like Pentatonix and Voctave, please react to the âDisney Princess Medleyâ featuring Kirstin Maldonado. Kate, the great soprano in Voctave, hits some truly amazing notes in that arrangement. Also, âRather Beâ is one of my favorite Pentatonix songs. Kirstie sings lead and Avi Kaplan, their original bass, does an incredible job. Thank you again for this reaction.
Sorry, I meant to say âDisney Love Songsâ featuring Kirsten Maldanoda. You already reacted to the Princess Medley. :)
Disney Love Medley. Iâll get it right eventually.
