- Honestly I think matt's video was a decent crash course for people new to streaming/twitch especially for a website that has a culture of shunning people for not already knowing everything. Yeah this was my exact thought process too, like Pokimane wasn’t banned cause lots of people were making reaction content, she was streaming NETFLIX FOR GODS SAKE, THEYVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR YEARS, THIS ISNT NEW, WHY ARE PEOPLE SURPRISED?!?! Netflix has always been taking down streams because of people live-streaming their shows, it should be common freaking sense that they’d do this. Also because for a very long time you could only watch them if you were viewing from a computer. Anyone on mobile or any other kind of app would be seeing the streamer sit on screen with a giant black box.
When the name of the game is accessibility to gain as many viewers as possible, watch parties make no sense. You create an instant gate to your stream when viewers can easily just go and watch another streamer for the time being. And even if you have prime, as others have said, you still have international licensing issues which further cuts down your audience. Plus, the vast majority of viewers, especially those wanting to interact with the streamer don't have prime, you can tell since those that have prime membership have the prime badge next to their name in chat.

I feel like CZcams videos have definitely gotten longer over time but maybe that’s just the people I watch
CZcams made some changes that heavily favored long form content. If you watch even 60% of a 30 min video compared to 100% of an 8 min video, that 30 min video gets ~18mins of watch time. That's over double the algorithmic preference and thus gets promoted more. I've seen 3 hour long videos with close to 10 million views. That's not an accident. That's youtube actively encouraging such content to be created. Now of course if video is crap, youtube will of course not really promote it unless it got external traffic. However, if you make 2 of basically the same video with no external skewing going on, the longer one with more padding with perform better algorithmically. Maybe not always, but in a general statistical sense.

from my perspective from a year or so after when youtube first started.
There was a 10 minute cap on videos
The only long form content on the site were movies and anime chopped up into sections, even official releases from copyright holders were all diced up.
Gaming videos blew up around the time the cap was removed, and those were pretty much the only longform videos out there.
Usually if a video only needed to be 3 min long it would get stretched out to 10:01 on the dot for that sweet cash
Somewhere around 2015/16 is when the 45 min video essays showed up, and that has been a mainstay to present day.

Many videos more generic videos I see in my sub box were made just to make it past the 10min mark and no more. Ludwig videos are actually a perfect example of this many of his videos being between 8-15min. There are outliers of course, but if you were to count them up - there's a good amount and I'd wager it's no accident.
I mean, CZcams and creators have access to much more stats and data consumption tools than I have as a user, but with my user experience I would be on the side of videos generally getting shorter within the last couple years

Matpat has often made videos which aren't in his teaditional wheelhouse, ie science and lore in games, and stretched into other areas with the help of yhe theorist team. Unlike many of his game theories, especially fnaf, he doesn't do the research himself. About half this research was done by his staff before he writes the script. However, he does own a consultation program for aspiring youtubers and is well respected in the community. The second half of his essay is wellmeaning and on the surface has good ideas. Also matpat often cites calls to action at the end of his videos and honestly believes that mass movements of creators can change their platforms.

I still disagree strongly with Ludwig's take that streamers should just do whatever they can to get to the top and to try and make it big on twitch. Streaming TV shows and copyrighted material is illegal. It is piracy. Some day it won't be a matter of "oh I got a copyright strike guess I'm banned now" and it'll be "oh I got sued by this media company for pirating their content guess I go to court now". And at that point twitch owes nothing to that content creator getting sued and will not and should not step in for them to take the blame. The fact that someone has to tell these online personalities that commiting piracy live in front of thousands of viewers is a no no, is shocking to me.
the only way that you'll get sued in this context is if you counterclaim; saying that you did not break the law, what you did was _transformative_ content and that it was fair use
@MoonLight Blue that's the way the system is currently. automated content id systems check if you have uploaded something you dont have the rights to and then you get sent an automatic takedown notice which you can dispute/counterclaim. The problem with this automated system is that most of twitch's revenue is generated while the content is being streamed/pirated live and the automated systems can only check vods and not live content. What I am suggesting is that any media company who realize and see how streamers are exploiting this loophole to earn revenue while pirating their content and not face any serious consequences, can and may issue a direct civil suit against the individual/streamer on the grounds of online piracy
The reason a company would directly sue is because twitch has no other alternative in place to remedy the problem of live piracy. The automated content id system works on youtube because youtube is just made of vods but on twitch literally nobody watches vods and the main revenue stream is the live content, which you cannot do anything about after its over. On youtube you can choose to split revenue with the copyright holder for a video going forward. On twitch once the stream ends all the donations are yours alone and theres nothing the tools now do to fix that. A reasonable decision for any company who realizes this would just be to directly sue.

It's a shame MatPat and Game Theory didn't reach out to the streamers in question when making this video. As Ludwig showed, a quick call to Toast cleared up what happened with his ban. MatPat probably doesn't have Toast as such an easy call as Ludwig, but he definitely has some way to contact him, since MatPat reached out to Toast for his Among Us charity stream in 2020.
Matpat just really didn't want to have to call someone, if he called 1 person, he'd have to interview everyone else he mentioned too. He does that sometimes

Just watched the theory for context. I think it's fine. Ultimately becoming more corporate IS what's best for twitch, but what's best for twitch isn't best for viewers, or even the streamers of twitch. There is a balance they need, and I think that's what matpats pushing for, not saying to go over the edge and get to CZcams levels of copyright checks, but to make the platform earn more, then allow them to support smaller streamers more, with the downside of forcing people who stream for a living to put more work in.

There was some factual inaccuracy but the main ideas were imo on point. The fact that all these copyright infringements are left unnoticed or without any repercussions is a fortunate and possibly temporary state of things. And that the streamers should take the "ultimate responsibility" is also a valid take - I can't really imagine Twitch going all out for a creator who at some point in the future gets sued into oblivion. They will become the scapegoat and the others will learn. Then it feels like the right thing to do is to have no issues with copyrights, even if Twitch does not actively enforce any rules. The fact that Twitch does not enforce these rules does not make doing these things legal.

No....he knows that stuff and so do I. I took a year of it for digital arts class and was taught about this stuff. The stuff that twitch allows people to do is straight up illegal. One of these days a big company is gonna sue not just a streamer but also twitch and its gonna be another ad-pocalapse. You can react to things but 1. Don't show the full thing or at least have a filter over it 2. ACTUALLY TALK THROUGH SOME OF IT if you don't do both of these two then your basically streaming the content and that's illegal. Do people not remember what happened to CZcams because they allowed stuff similar to this? It was because of that, that CZcams has become super fucking strict when it comes to copyright. If only mattpat mentioned that part in this video because people seemed to have completely forgotten about that.

If you just watch Mastercard in its entirety while you are out of the room for 14 minutes *coughcoughHassan* then you deserve that strike. If you watch a video and pause it and add to the conversation then you are transforming the work.
This is also why youtube is so broken. They swung too far the opposite way. Oh you sampled 2 seconds of a song that's in the background you can barely hear? Congrats all monetization goes to the owner of that sample and here comes a strike.

I agree. Though I’m in no way a streamer, I’ve spent a lot of time studying what it takes to strike it big in the online content world. One of the biggest things you need is the time. You need to commit hours a day into making it work, which if you work full time, is close to an impossibility. Like MatPat says, reacting is easy. It’s a bit brainless, but it fills the time well. I feel like if I were ever to pursue a career on a platform like Twitch/CZcams, I’d try to gain traction through CZcams and stream every so often, putting more focus on CZcams than anything else and then easing in to streaming. It’s what I’d recommend for anyone who wants to start producing content on an online platform. Twitch is a much more competitive platform, while CZcams is (don’t get me wrong, it’s still competitive but not as much so) more passive.

Literally the only point he disagreed on was that the specific streamers called out didn't get banned. And even then, Disguised Toast SAID "It was going to be faked" meaning that anyone who does basic research will see it was faked, the only reason Ludwig knows its not is because he can just call and ask the man. Which may I remind you, he admitted the plan was to have a friend claim him which at least in my book is still fake. That friend was clearly not a rights holder to Kitchen Nightmares.
And the fact Ludwig's conclusion was different is actually just proving Matpats point further. Why wouldn't a streamer who's dedicated to their craft want to push their platform to be better? It may not change anything but still, if your proud of doing something you should be pushing it to be as best as it can be. Matpat never said it IS streamers responsibility to change Twitch, he said streamers SHOULD try and push twitch to be better, the same way CZcamsrs have pushed CZcams to be better. Which has proven effective, even if not in the ways people wanted.

I think Lud doesn't give enough credit to creators when it comes to leverage over the platform tbh. Large streamers could 100% come together and form some kind of coalition almost that would enable them to push back against and fucked Twitch policies. Twitch can't just lose more and more people to CZcams or else they will just bleed away all of their content.
The streamers are independent contractors and thus have far less power when unionising. Joining an org helps but no. If twitch is willing to bleed Ludwig, ninja, shroud, valkaraye, etc it just proves what everyone knows: streamers come and go but twitch community is the best and will always grow. The idealism that content creators have that much power is crazy. It would take every single creator to put their neck and brand on the line. A lot of them don't even have the freedom to do so because their org has separate contracts they need to uphold (i.e. sponsored streams). All of this for basically no reward for the top streamersm

Little confused about all the “inaccuracies” there was one about Hassan that he noted in the description and there was the one about Toast that he actually got right in the video despite the validity of the claim being known to nobody but Toast. The thing about videos getting longer was a guess from Ludwig based on his own experience, but MatPat is literally a CZcams analytics expert and has been for many years (and has multiple bigger CZcams channels than Ludwig) At least in this video it seems these were the only inaccuracies pointed out??? And Ludwig says he has the opposite take as MatPat but it sounded like he reworded MatPat’s same take by saying the Twitch needs to do things to encourage streamers to leave the react meta and it should not be on the streamer. Why are we making MatPat out to be the bad guy, am I missing something?
Because Ludwig doesn't want to take the social heat that would come from calling out his friends that rely on react content. Easier to latch onto minor (to the point of insignificant) inaccuracies in order to dismiss the actual argument, rather than publicly calling out his friends by agreeing with the overall thesis. I don't really blame him for this, because most people would back their friends, but he is obviously coming at this video (and the broader topic) from a pretty biased perspective.

I feel like mat is at a point in his life where he has so much on his plate that a team of writers is necessary for him to be able to put out any content in short periods of time, which unfortunately can lead to some of his theories being less researched than others. You can tell when mat himself personally goes to research things or is invested in a topic too, ie fnaf or all of food theory, so its not like he doesnt make high quality videos anymore, it just has some filler with them too
This is the main reason I don't think he should ever make that 4th channel. All the research, scripting, editing, and recording that goes into these quality videos is already stretching at three. I'm afraid it would downright SNAP.

When I started watching youtube the average video length was around 8 minutes. It slowly moved up to 20 minutes, and a few years ago moved back down to 10. I honestly have no idea what is optimal anymore, but it seems as though most videos are in the teens, leaning towards 20 minutes.

he did react to that on stream, you can check luds most recent vod. but he said that twitch do all the stuff mentioned already, viewing parties are a thing and people do get payed to watch shows. he said however that in theory it sounds like a good idea, but doesn't really work. "Viewing parties" do not perform well on twitch and it's pretty boring content.

I think a conversation about this between MatPat and Ludwig could be super interesting because MatPat is known to work with creators on the background and has a pretty good understanding of the CZcams algorithm while Ludwig is also bringing in the perspective of a Twitch Streamer transitioning to CZcams who learned tactics for Twitch and is trying to sustain/adapt them for CZcams

The reason I respect Lud so much is he’s an absolute expert his own field and doesn’t overreach.

You only have to watch his streamers tier list video to see how much research has gone into the final product and subathon proved the commitment. Got to respect the grind.
I think streamers can have a say in this situation, if your contract is forcing you to turn your stream into a watch party where you add nothing because of how mentally/physically draining streaming 8-12+ hours can be, why not work as to lower your streaming hours in order to not have to "be forced" into watching videos "with" your audience and counting that as content.

A theory is something that isn't fact, but gives evidence to how something might be true, but can never be known unless explicitly stated by it's creator. It's not insurance against wrongful claims. A theory can't be wrong it can only be disproven because it never says that something is right to begin with.
