I went through Parris Island in August 2012. Remember a lot of the places here around the Third Battalion area and not much has changed. I still remember after the Crucible, standing by the Iwo Jima memorial as the sun slowly rose above the parade field as our Chief Drill Instructor talked to us right before we got our EGA's. I still remember when Sergeant Lopez stood in front of me and placed it within my hand. I got out of the Marines in 2017 but to this day, when I look back on that day and when I go home and see my EGA on my table, through all the pain and everything, it was and always will be the best choice I have ever made in my life.

Lets hope that the new changes will be beneficial for our country and not affect mission readiness.

    • @coffey8653
      @coffey8653 Před 2 lety

I disagree the corp should remain the elite fighting force that it is traditionally known for. When change is to makes something weaker not stronger so that it is easy enough for the average Joe to be able to make it through. that is a major problem and a threat to the country’s national defense and security. The separation of men and women in boot camp mad it more aggressive for each gender. Because it got the max limit out of each gender. You can not push a women to the same limit that you can a male. What is going to start happing is more injuries physical and mental, the focus on training will never be the same because of harmonies flowing, on the other hand sexual harassment allegations because some female that refuse to train will use that to cheat the system to slip through the cracks into the fleet. It will become a issue with male DI’s and careers will Be ended based on a lie.but these vote hungry to remain in office politicians that are willing to sell their souls for votes don’t realize what type of compromising position they are putting these Marines in when it comes to combat. Because they haven’t served a day in the military themselves to understand what it is like. It just make me sick to the stomach that the want the army to over shadowed the Marine Corp so bad that they have went to great lengths to try to weaken the Corp. taking tank Bn. Away! Stripping the roles of the corp during Combat. Intergrading females into training with males. Female DI’s drilling Male Marines…….. come on really! I thought it couldn’t get no worse when they came out with the space force crap. Then they come up with this. What’s next. That is one reason why the other countries don’t fear us any more. We have put so much emphasis on making recruits and their parents happy that we have lost focus on staying the cutting edge of the world. This is very disappointing. I’m glad I joined in the 80’s. I can’t imagine saying or telling someone, yeah in our fire team it was myself, Eric, James and Tiffany……smh.

I landed on Parris Island on April 1, 1956, a week before the Ribbon Creek tragedy. At that time we learned to recite in union, a chant that began: "We love Parris Island, the land that God forgot where the sand is fourteen inches deep and the sun is scorching hot." That's all I remember of it, so are there any other former Marines like me (age 82) who happen to remember the rest of the chant?

      The sun is blazing hot.
      And everyday he'll wake up,
      Before the rising sun.
He'll run a hundred miles or more,
      Before the day is done.
      He's deadly with a rifle,
      A bayonet made of steel.
He's took the Devils calling card,
      He's mastered how to kill.
And when he gets to heaven,
      St. Peter he will tell.
      One more Marine reporting Sir,
I've served my time in hell.
So listen all you young girls,
To what I have to say.
Go out and find a young marine,
      To love you everyday.
He'll hug you and he'll kiss you,
And treat you like a queen.
