My son, my only son is in Parris Island right now training to become a marine. 18 yrs old straight outta high school, as a father i never thought he would go into the military because we talked many times about it. So you can imagine my surprise and shock when he did, it took awhile to wrap my mind around his decision. But now that he's in training i find myself learning about the Marine Corps that i never would have if not for my son. To all the families of Marine Corps recruits, please pray for your son and daughters that they depend on not just what they learned as a Marine but know that with God they can do so much more. God bless.
Sir, hundreds of thousands of young males went into the Corps as boys and came out men. Not to worry... I went in at 19, the day after my birthday in '66 voluntarily because it was MY turn to serve my country. Maybe your son feels it is HIS turn to serve his country as well. Our senior DI was an old jarhead who had fought at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea... the Marines were completely surrounded and fought their way out, decimating several Chinese divisions while doing so. He had a saying that's stayed with me all these years... "The More we Sweat in Peace, the Less we Bleed in War." Pray that your son never has to fire his rifle in anger, but if he does, that he had the best training possible to keep him and his fellow Marines alive. He will get that training at PI. Semper Fi

My son became a Marine 3.5 years ago. After being stationed at 29 Palms, he is back at Parris Island as a Marksmanship coach. He said it was weird coming back to PI and not being yelled at, lol. He loves being stationed there now.
My friend got stationed out at 29 Palms. He graduated in January 2017. Arrived on Halloween 2016.
I remember my graduation day, the civies were so casual and annoying, giggling and laughing at the spectacle of it all, while everyone else took it seriously. Obviously I can't expect them to know what it was like unless they served, but their nature was a stark reflection of what we used to be.
civilians who have never served , lost a loved one in service or an immediate family member of a service man or woman will never "get it".
I attended a graduation. I took that serious as fuck. Went to the raising of the colors or whatever it was called. It was amazing, it made me feel so fortunate to be there grateful for all who made the choice to join and regret I didn’t enlist when I was 17-18 in 2007-2008. At the time I said fuck the war fuck bush etc ect. We stayed the day before longer than we should have watching the practice march into the indoor spot where you meet your marine. Then a little of the marching on the parade deck. The museum was awesome. The graduation itself was spectacular. It’s crazy after seeing the DI’s with their family’s smiling. New born baby’s who will find out at some point their father was a scout sniper with several confirmed kills.
Also the statue of the Raising of the flag at Iwo Jima (I’m retarded so ignore my spelling. It looks wrong might be right. ) shit gave me the chills. Aside from the terrible heat in the middle of summer, and the fact my shorts zipper kept unzipping so I needed buy a pair of dickies from the MCX just to find out they don’t sell that shit to civilians I had to run outside grab the Marine and go back. When I have a son I’m gonna try my hardest to get him interested in this. I can’t think of a greater honor than raising a US Marine.
Also forgot Chesty was a bad ass.
1981, I entered the hell known as Parris Island. I was told there's only 2 ways to leave (1) you graduated (2) you leave in a body bag. Graduation seemed to be a better option for me, being only 17 at the time I still wanted to explore this thing called life. I'm 56 now, and I would do it all over again. Semper Fidelis!
10 June 1982 I stepped onto those yellow footprints and into a different life. The Corps changed both my life goals and trajectory for the better.
I'll be 56 in a few days but if I drop dead tonight I will die as a United States Marine.

Got ya beat by exactly one year, except I was up at Great Lakes. Nobody joined the service back then remember? I was only one of maybe 4 out of a HS class of over 400. But not a day goes by that I don’t think of my time in uniform.
I now hear stories from people I know who wish they would have gone in back in the day. But you can’t go back. There are those that did and have these cherished experiences and memories and the solemn pride that goes with them. And there are those that didn’t who will always wonder.
For me personally bootcamp wasn’t enough…. 5 years later I’m on the yellow footprints at AOCS at NAS Pensacola starting my new career as a Naval Aviator being looked after by non other than the USMC.
Now retired after 27 years in uniform. Thanks US Navy and USMC.

We might give each other a hard time and continue our rivalries, but from a career-Air Force man, this video sent chills down my spine. The long road to basic training graduation may vary by military branch, but it is still just as monumental at the end. I appreciate all of my brothers and sisters across the United States military, as well as their supportive families and friends.

The only people that are allowed to dis any of the four branches are those in or from those four branches. We are all brothers and sisters. My Dad is a Marine. Drafted in '69. 12 promotions and 20 years later he retired as a Major. My mother was a Marine. Finished as a Captain. It's one of the things, among many that I'm proud to say about them. Life wasn't easy growing up but as an adult I feel I had an advantage because I knew what hard work, honor, and responsibility was long before any of my friends. Dad passed away 4 years ago, but when people ask "When you Dad was a Marine....?" I say, no, not when, He still is. Even in death you cannot take away his title. He'll always be Major Dad to me.

I still remember that apple they gave us halfway through that last 9 mile hump back to receive that warriors breakfast and title of Marine. It still is the most delicious apple I have ever had.. probably because I was starving and soaking wet from constant downpours for the majority of the crucible.

Someone stole all my food the first night of the crucible. I had that apple to thank 2 days later for making it to through the 9-10 mile hike back.
They gave everyone an apple at the top of the reaper mountain halfway through the hike when I went through in 2009. I agree that it was one of the most delicious things I have ever tasted.

I remember I tried to join the Marines about a year ago now, I will never forget the dedication I had and how much time I put into the process and looking up anything I could find about the Marines. But I was saddened when I couldn’t go because I have ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and that it’s one of the things that not only the marines but any branch of the military does not allow. I instead chose to be a Corrections Officer but I still have a high amount of respect for the Marines, I can only imagine the hell these soldiers have to go through to fight for our country.

Let me just say this. After going through boot camp going on 7 years ago, no matter what anyone’s feelings are towards the Marines. It’s very humbling. One of the most memorable times of my life has to be the Iwo Jima memorial after the crucible and receiving your EGA. I shit you not, I and other grown ass men were literally fighting back tears when you hear the music and see our flag raised. It’s hard to explain but It’s a feeling I’ll never forget.
I remember my own experience and as I sit here reflecting, I realize it was the first time in my life I didn't feel like an outcast. I wish I could return and feel that all again. The smell of the warm humid air, that feeling you have when you're making your bed at 0430 in the morning and putting on your running shoes and going down to chow hall for breakfast at 0500 and only have 5 minutes to eat. Marching with your rifle at order arms to the chow hall while the drill instructor calls cadence. Learning to scream AYE SIR!! Thinking you're screaming it as loud as possible but doubting yourself because you're still getting screamed at. Sitting in the air conditioned classroom for training after you've been sweating in the hot sun for hours and then trying to stay awake so you don't get IT'd in the sand pit. The first time you fire your rifle during range week and learn the gun powder smell you will never forget. Or even the overwhelming delight you have when you get your hands on box chow with a cheap cold cut sandwich an apple, granola bar and raisins. When you finally make it to the end and you're standing on the parade deck at graduation with you chest puffed out extra for your family to see. I would give anything for those feelings again. Unfortunately now in my late 30s, the memory is all I have and it will be cherished.
A lot of "Boys" have become MARINES, since I became one . . . I'm considered "Old Corps", by the Marines of today. Vietnam, is just considered HISTORY , but "Then" as NOW . . . MARINES were "There". 241 yrs . . . an still "The Best" !
I don't know if you'll ever see this but maybe some other Vietnam Marine will. You guys became essentially what all of the recruits of today want to be. I used to just look up Navy Cross and Medal of Honor citations and tell recruits those stories, and they fucking loved them. 2ndLt John Bobo's was my favorite.

I am a 64 year old Marine who did graduate from Parris Island in 1977 , I remember my platoon , My platoon's Drill Instructors , I remember it a time of great personal challenges and growth , with the proudest moment was when our Drill Instructors shook our hand and said " congratulation Marine "

I've been in the marine corp for 3 years now, the only advice you need for bootcamp is to do whatever you are told as loud/quick as humanly possible. Don't ask yourself "why are they making us do this". Nothing will make sense at first. But I promise you, everything the instructors do, they do with a purpose.

This is the best video on Parris Island boot camp I have seen. I teared up when they were handing out the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor emblems. I graduated from Parris Island on November 11, 1964. I mustered out of the Marines on August 17, 1968 as an E-5 Sargeant and was proud to serve. One thing the modern Corps has that we did not have in the old days is the Crucible. I admire all those recruits that have made it through that exercise.
Dwight Turner They don't allow E5 promotion within a 4 year enlistment now, they use it get you to sign up for another 4 before getting promoted. There are special situations of course, but the mass majority is never allowed. E4 is topped out, unless stepped or special.

We did Ellis Beach in 69. Then AFTER boot camp we had infantry training at Camp Lejuene. I loved it. I was a 30 day wonder because I was an air winger. Loved and hated it. Full Metal Jacket tells the story well of Boot Camp in the 60’s. Would you guys agree?

Had 1 guy in my platoon actually finish the 20mile hump with 2 broken arches in his feet....BROKEN! Meanwhile, like 30 or so Marines didnt even finish that shit and had to do it all over again or they weren't graduating...screw that shit...I made SURE I grabbed that pack in front of me! Lol...I wasnt about to have to do that shit a 2nd time! Hahahah...ooh rah devil dogs

My 17 year old son just got sworn in 2 days ago. After graduation this June, he will leave Aug 7 for Parris Island. I am soo very proud of my boy but I can't hold back my tears everytime I think about him being gone. Thank you all for your service!

My dad went through those Silver Hatches at Pariss Island. He was proud to to wear the title of Marine for the rest of his life. He was and is my hero and I am proud to be a Marine's daughter. SEMPER FI to all the Devil Dogs who who have served and who are serving now.
Graduated Sept 86. A Co. 1ST Battalion. I loved drill. The sound of a 3rd phase platoon marching when they are sharp! The heels hitting the deck. A look of confidence that was nowhere to be seen, in receiving. I get highly motivated just thinking back. I attended my nephews graduation from the Army a few months ago. First thing. They graduated like 1200 soldiers. Second, when they marched out, everyone seemed they were out of step. I know it seems trivial, but it stuck out to me like a sore thumb. I commend all that choose to defend our country. I am truly biased but aint nothing like the feeling of being a Marine. Semper Fidelis.
While in active duty I was treated with great respect and I did everything expected of a US Marine, combat action, good PFT, good conduct, etc. Again, I was treated by all with other Marines as a warrior, not focusing on color, race, or social status.
Now, living amongst civilians I miss the Corps. The USA is filled with drug addicts, racists, complainers, fearful people, psychopaths, sociopaths, crazies and the fake.

I’m a kid and I was born here. My dad was a drill instructor so I’ve always loved the Marie Corp. My cousin is currently in boot camp here. I like to imagine myself walking threw those doors one day.
Im gonna enlist and carry the torch for my grandfathers before me. Most folks tell me it's one of the best decisions they ever made. The more time that passes the more i realize the marine corps is where i belong.

My brother graduated from Marine boot camp from South Carolina February 27th of this year and proudly is a Marine through and through. He says he wants to make this a career.

What platoon?
My first memory of the Corps was arriving in NYC for a train ride to Parris Island on August 4, 1958, arriving on a broken down train (no seats) , picking up every butt at the train station, and being introduced to the sand flee at our platoon's quonset huts for Platoon 320. I learned how to be a man in 12 weeks and highly recommend the U.S. Marine Corps to all of our current youth as a beginning into adulthood. MOS 6771
I served in the Navy from 93-97... When I was around 32 or 33, about 10 years after I got out, a Marine recruiter at the mall asked me if I was interested in joining the Marines. I was there on Parris Island in 1970, it looks like somethings never change, this video shows a bit of what USMC training still like. It was one of the best things I ever tried in my life, it was a life changing experience

Wayne, I'm also 72 and a Marine. The Marine Corps straightened me out. After my enlistment I went on to be a Phoenix Arizona Police Officer for 28 years. I retired May 31st 1999. My wife Ann and I are still chugging along in Sun City, Arizona. We have 9 grandchildren. God Bless you.

I passed through them once, and never would again even if given the chance. Not because I wouldn't become a Marine again, but because once you do it right one time, there is never a need to do it again, because even in the next life I will be a Marine.
Ended up on Parris Island back on Jan. 29, 1974. My first thought upon arriving was " what in thee fuck did i get myself into.. Last one off the bus got a kick in the ass and a couple DI' s jumping him for being to slow. Lot of physical abuse back then but nothing you couldn't handle. Worse ass beating i saw on PI was on the range. Don't know what happened to cause it but the series was standing in formation for the chow hall. Then i heard a big ruckus up in front and a couple of DI's came thru the ranks beating and kicking the shit out of some pvt. Their covers were off and their faces were beat red and both in a fucking rage. Several other DI's Step in and pulled them off the pvt. like i said i have no idea what caused it. You just don't ask questions.. Hell, you don't speak until you receive permission to do so. One time in 1 st phase we were practicing the manual of arms. I naturally fucked up but my mistake was quickly made right By the SDI who grabbed my weapon and promptly smack me along side my head with it knocking off both hand guards (m-16a 1). Anyhow, enough of the stories. I as well as all of you someday will ramble on about the marines forever. Good Luck to all you crazy little fuckers. And one more thing you marines today are really fuckin impressive . Bigger, smarter , faster, stronger, better equip than we ever were. Us old shits just have more stories. ... It's an experience that can shape the rest of your life. It was more brutal in the past sure, but it still isn't a breeze.
It's a crying shame that not all young 20 year olds go through this kind of training. It would definitely give them the basic tools of becoming a human being. I did 21 years in the Air Force and I am a better man because of it. I can only hope my grand son does the same.

He was a skinny 18yr old and said he was never more proud of anything he's ever accomplished since that day on November the 4th of 1994 when he graduated from 2nd Battalion, Fox Co. Platoon 2017 Semper Fi to all the past, present, and ESPECIALLY future Marines out there. Oouh Rah Devil Dogs!! Get some!

Almost 33 years ago to the day,
I myself stepped off the Bus at the Glorious vacation grounds called Parris Island 🌴,
Though I had some basic research listening to tapes , etc... as to what to expect, I still had no idea what I had in front of me at age of 18.
But joining the Marines was the best decision I could of made at the time & has highly enhanced my life every sense.
I was fortunate that many years of various sports- football, baseball, track & cross country had me in fantastic physical shape, so though I know the PT and obstacle courses are physically demanding, I was blessed that for most part that part of the training was easy for me, maintaining a 300 PFT throughout boot camp, what I didn’t anticipate was how much mental testing was required, as generally all hear about is the physical challenges, but adapting to all the rules & countless regulations was problematic for me initially, as I seemed to be almost always in trouble & on the quarter deck, doing extra PT for hours... but partly I believe the drill instructors were trying to break me, but my physical threshold was high at the time, I could do sit-ups or pushups or mountain climbers or side straddle hops all day long...
But all the mind games & manipulation of a young mind was the hardest part for me, but in the end it builds character & builds Marines, & again it affected all aspects of my life & never say die attitude to this day.
At 18 when I decided to join the Military,
I wanted to be part of the most elite fighting force on the face of the earth, so The United States 🇺🇸 Marines was the only option,
I never considered any other branch.
I’ve made a few (or many) mistakes in my life, but Joining the Marines ain’t one.
Greatly miss the camaraderie!
No civilian workplace has such a brotherhood!

My closest friend was Corporal Neil Regonini. He joined the Marines while I joined the police department as a dispatcher. We spent time together when he returned home. One night when he was home I took a 911 call of a fatal motor vehicle accident. Shortly thereafter I learned it was my best friend Neil. Life is ironic and cruel at times, and handling my best friends death on duty as a young man has stuck with me all this time. As an experienced police officer now I hold all of the values Corporal Regonini taught me. I miss you brother. God bless the Marine Corps.
I remember my time there. I remember the reversed tinted windows with the lights on inside so you couldn't look outside. They drove around for an extra 30 minutes to confuse us.
We got in trouble one night, so they made us dump our footlockers in the middle of the barracks, then do close order in the sand pit while they used the fire hose on us.
I shot near perfect score at the rifle range, missing only one center shot. I still have my shooting card.
I remember the week before graduation. A small group of us crawled in to the return vent of the AC system so we could listen to a small radio. I stood up in the passage and found a hidden part of the interior with hundreds of names, some with messages of Marines going off to war. I signed my name too.
I leave in 4 days! I cannot wait to become a marine 🇺🇸 it will all be worth it!

Funny story here, really is a small corps. The receiving hat in the beginning was my Chief Drill Instructor in Lima Company. He's now at Camp Johnson where I'm in ITP and I ran into him at the Chow Hall where I gave him the proper greeting and all that. He looked at me, grinned and said, "Oorah devil", To think this was the same man that IT'd my entire series on Christmas day because of a stolen peanut butter packet lmao.

My best friend went to boot camp in the beginning in July. He’s nearing his last month of training and I’m hoping nothing but the best for him. My respect for him and his commitment to the USMC is beyond any words.

Parris Island, March '72-June '72. Boot camp took some mental adjustment, but no big deal once you get use to it. Stayed in 5 1/2 years. Glad I chose the Marine Corps ! Instant respect, more than any other branch. OOH-RAA !
