  • Happy New Year! What better way to start the new year than with the most optimistic fish...in...the ocean. Finding Dory didn't get Finding Nemo levels of love, but it was still another enjoyable outing from Pixar. Here's everything right with Finding Dory.

Honestly, I have heard a couple of people complain that Marlin is just a grouchy stick in the mud who loses patience with Dory in this movie, but I disagree. He only really snapped at Dory the one time....after they were chased by the squid...and he was scared because Nemo was in danger so he snapped at her and he immediately regretted it. The dynamic of Marlin's character is much different in this film compared to Finding Nemo. In the first film, Nemo was already gone when Marlin and Dory journeyed across the ocean and his focus for the entire journey was on finding his son so he wouldn't break his promise. In this movie, he does promise Dory that he will help her find her family, but the difference is, they don't actually LOSE Dory until they get to California and in this movie, Marlin essentially finds himself responsible for taking care of two children....Nemo who is really a child, and the forgetful Dory...who I feel like he sees as something akin to a child. So naturally he IS going to be a bit more serious, because he is the adult in the situation.

The part where Dory mishears "hands" as "Hans" always gets to me.
The city I live in has a relatively large aquarium (we're on the coast, so it makes sense.). In the large main display aquarium was a sand tiger shark named Hans. So many people in this city feel like they've grown up with Hans. He's like a mascot for the locals. Lots of us got to know him really well. Or, as well as you can get to know a shark without being on the menu. I know a lot of the locals my age who felt like they grew up with Hans were excited to introduce their own children to him. Hans taught them that sharks aren't the scary kill-crazy monsters most folks think they are, they are complex, beautiful, and worthy of respect and protection. I know I was looking forward to my own son learning that lesson largely through Hans.
Unfortunately in 2015 there was an accident in some of the exhibits and a great number of the animals died. Hans was the most well-known and recognizable of the animals lost. He was 25, and expected to have many more years before him. His death hit this city hard. He's still missed and remembered fondly, but often with a tear stinging the back of your eye.
My son and his cousins love Finding Dory, so I've seen it several times, and every. single. time. Dory's line of "no, not Hans, I'm looking for Hank," hits me hard. I know it's there! I just seem to forget about it until she says it. And then I feel a little like I was hit in the gut. Over a shark, y'all. A pretty menacing looking shark. A menacing looking shark that's been dead 2 years now.
    Nevertheless it gets to me.
It's amazing how connected you can feel to animals that aren't even pets. Animals that have no idea who you are, animals you've never touched. They can still make some room for themselves in your heart.

I liked this movie. The "living with disabilities" themes hit me even harder with this one (probably because I'm an adult now, so I catch nuances better, also possibly since I'm autistic, so Dory's more mental/social disability was something I could relate to on a more personal level) and I found the message encouraging and empowering (though I agree, Gerald's treatment made me kind of uncomfortable). I was also intrigued by how they filmed the moment where Dory thinks her parents are dead, and everything gets hazy and unreal. I experienced a (brief) derealization episode once, and it felt very much like that scene. They did a good portraying it, in my opinion. The pacing in the beginning of the movie was a bit odd. It felt kind of disjointed and rushed before they made it to the aquarium. But once it got going I was able to invest in it just fine. Definitely would like to buy it eventually :)

My fav little bit of trivia is the fact that: Blue Tangs are near impossible to breed in captivity. Every Tang in the colony from the movie was likely captured and rehabilitated from a reef, for a combination of study and preservation. Dory should, by all rights, not exist. And being born in captivity was likely the cause of her STML in the first place. Not being born under the proper conditions left her with a “birth defect” in a sense. She was a miracle baby. And thats awesome. Along with the great message, the writers for the movie tied in a realistic factual issue with conservation efforts in a very subtle way for part of Dory’s backstory.

The Empire Strikes Back: EVERYTHING is great, it's a flawless movie.
      Return of the Jedi:
Not as good as the others, the fact that the ewoks defeated the Empire's best troops is just ridiculous, Boba Fett died in a really stupid way, Luke's plan to save Han could have been better, and a Second Death Star with an even bigger opening to destroy it? Seriously? But still it is a very good movie with some great action and the last act where the Emperor and Vader are trying to seduce Luke to the dark side has some of the best scenes in the entire trilogy.

The one part of this movie I'm surprised wasn't a win was the transition from the natural breath taking beauty of the Australian waters while once in America, it has a more gritty and realistic depiction of polluted waters. That scene made me fall in love with the movie instantly due to its more subtle messages hidden throughout. I saw Finding Dory in theatres and I have *never* had a moviewatching experience like it.
Now, I think Pixar movies are pretty great, and most of them get an A or A- from me just because their plot + beauty is so awesome. I liked Finding Nemo just fine, but Toy Story and Monsters Inc. are far more special to me. Still, I trusted Pixar to make the story in Finding Dory worth the telling, and I wasn't expecting anything from this movie except to enjoy it and have a good time.
Instead, I was a blubbering mess for Every. Single. Flashback. Seriously, as soon as Tiny Dory (TM) showed up, and her parents were so loving and supportive and were so willing to do whatever it took to work with her special needs, I lost it. And not just weeping. Straight-up bawling, to where I was worried I would annoy the people around me. It didn't let up for the whole movie. Every time we went back to Tiny Dory (TM) I started crying. It was a strange, visceral reaction I couldn't control.
Like I said, I've never had a moviewatching experience like it, and I'm still not really sure why it affected me so profoundly. But I'm glad they made it. And I'm glad CinemaWins is here.

Another effective thing of having a baby Dory that is fifty percent eyes is you get to see the stars of the night sky reflected in them when she's at the surface further increasing adorability.
"Holy carp there is another way." Fish puns.
"Water. I need water." Glad they took notice of how long Dory's been out of the water at this point.

Hank the ceptopus (sorry I don't know how to spell that but you get the idea) was a truly amazing feat of animation from Disney/Pixar. I am always thoroughly amazed at it every time I watch this movie. But let's not forget about Dory. I absolutely love baby Dory. She's so freaking adorable I can't get over it. She's even cuter than Nemo, if that's even possible. Great movie and even greater animation work from the studio. The realistic light, water and movement of the creatures involved are incredible and I think will definitely stand the test of time. Just an all around great movie. One of my favorites. "What do we do when we see the undertow?" "We say let's go!!!" "I like sand, sand is squishy."

What many people got wrong about Finding Dory is that Destiny the whale shark is NOT a whale. Whale sharks are actually the biggest fish in the ocean, the biggest recorded being 12.65m long (not quite as long as the longest fish, an oarfish) and weighing about 19,000 kg when fully grown.

Finally. Took me forever but I finally got around to seeing this movie. And boy is it amazing. I can kind of feel for Marlin at some points because as helpful and perfect as Dory is you need a moment to focus on your son. Only a moment and he loses all sympathy for yelling at Dory but still.
Also I just cant seem to picture getting mad at Dory for forgetting things, though I do love how shes able to detail her entire adventure with Marlin, its like both these little adventures of hers got her memory actually working again. Maybe her Joy managed to fix the memory shelves or something.
