I'd love to see a behind-the-scenes episode of Food Wars where it's the planning and shopping phase for each episode. I imagine the reaction of the store clerks seeing whomever buying hundreds of dollars worth of a single product would also be funny.

So if Coca-Cola is the only company legally allowed to import Coca leaf extract then they don't need to hide the recipe. We couldn't make it if we wanted.

@@triplea5293 i find that interesting, as here in the uk imported american drinks have skyrocketed in popularity - there are many 'american candy' stores in cities now (although apparently quite a lot of these are fronts 😂) and corner shops usually stock imported american soft drinks, the most commonly found brand being fanta. id always assumed that people were big into fanta in the US because of how many varieties there were (grape, pineapple, two varients of apple, strawberry, cherry, mango, grape, peach and that bright blue berry one) - in the uk we just have orange, lemon (goated), fruit twist (a kind of red tropical flavour) and a couple other gimmick no-sugar only flavours that i dont really count. do most american drinks have this many flavours? because i dont understand why they sustain such a large product range if their customer base is shrinking rather than expanding

    Fun stuff. Some notes:
    - The 35 pack of Coke is sold in all of the bulk stores/clubs, i.e. Sam's Club (walmart), BJs, & Costco; saw them today while out shopping. AFAIK though they don't ship it; gotta actually drive to the store & pick it up. All Coke products come in 35 ct plastic wrapped cardboard bases; all Pepsi products come in 36 ct boxes.
    - Re: cocaine; the name "Coca-Cola" actually stands for Coca leaves (cocaine) & Kola nuts (caffeine), so the name actually means "cocaine & caffeine";
    - and yes, it originally had cocaine in it, and was made by a pharmacist as a medicinal drink to cure stuff, like drug/alcohol addiction, low energy (lol), and headaches. The recipe was changed significantly when a businessman bought the rights to it & started the company & mass production, with lowered cocaine content; and it was finally removed a few years later.
    - Surprised you didn't mention New Coke. In 1985 Coke stopped making Coke & replaced it with "New Coke", which was basically the Diet Coke formula but using sugar instead; b/c they wanted to stop having to deal w/ Coca leaves & cocaine concerns.
    - Part of the reason the international Coke tastes so similar is because a lot of the flavor comes from the coca leaves (it's brewed like tea), which is why it has a subtle herbal earthy flavor. As opposed to Pepsi, which just tastes like sugar. Sugar vs HFCS Coke taste really similar, with a slight added flavor; Sugar vs HFCS Pepsi taste radically different, like not even the same drink. Same w/ RC Cola.
    - To show the difference between sugar & aspartame concentration; should've picked up J-Ello packets. The regular sugar jello mix fills the whole box & is the size of a hockey puck / baseball; for the sugar free it's like the size of a packet of coffee sweetener.
okay i'm out of useless info

@@thecompanioncube4211 yea it's not meant to be shippable; it's designed to be easily make pallets (the big stacked cubes of products moved around by forklifts), and it works really well for that. That point about the safe containing the recipe of “7X” is true. My aunt in Atlanta started working for coke as a secretary in the 60s. She retired about 20 years ago as a VP in the accounting department. Her job was to keep track of the purchasing of the ingredients for their proprietary ingredient “7X”. She is on a lifetime retainer to not reveal those 7 ingredients.
When I was a kid and visiting her, she frequently had cases of “diet drink A”, B C etc that we were encouraged to drink and provide feedback for the development of Coke’s various diet options throughout the years.

3 liters WERE available quite commonly in the US in the 80s when I was a kid. The problem was they went flat almost as quickly as you opened them. So unless you were having a family reunion, all it did was encourage people (specifically kids at home during the summer) to drink more coke. Most moms I knew stopped buying them outside of special occasions. By the 90s it just seemed more common for all my friends moms to have off brand soda cans in stock for us teenagers/college moochers to drink.

So I'm not an expert on patent law, but from what I've read the reason why Coke keeps their recipe secret is because patent law requires the details to be made public and is only in effect for 20 years until it expires and allows anyone to use it. Case in point, drug companies will patent a drug and make tons of money off it, but after the patent expires the company will lose out to generic store brand varieties of the same drug. Whereas, if the recipe remains a trade secret, it can remain the property of Coca Cola forever.
Also, I believe there was an incident in 2006 where a group of people working for Coke did steal the recipe and attempted to sell it to Pepsi, but Pepsi refused to take it and called the cops to arrest them.

I live in Winnipeg, Canada. The largest pack of coke I can get is a 32(4x8) pack from Costco only, everywhere else only sells 24 packs as their largest size.
This year they also released a Quebec Maple and British Columbia Raspberry flavour coke in glass bottles, the Raspberry one is absolutely fantastic while the Maple one is disappointing, it's like mixing Maple Crown Royal and coke without the added benefit of getting drunk.

The largest UK pack is a 30 can box from Costco. They haven't researched this very well

Nah you can defo get a bigger pack of cans in the uk. I believe around a 30 pack or something. I’ve gotten a few before instead of the 24 pack.

OMG that was amazing. I I love Coke, ok, I said it. I sneak it in whenever possible, always in moderation. Seeing these two comedians and their candid reactions and jest, was simply spot on! I laughed out loud several times. I need a coke now. Subscribed.

  • @theophrastusbombastus1359

Only got as far as the first taste test, but another factor not, well, factored in was the flavour inducing container
Plastic, metal, and glass vessels all impart different flavours - even with a liquid made from a common recipe

There are some 3 liter sodas out there, just hard to find, Save A Lot food stores tend to have them and I *THINK* Faygo has 3 liter options as well.
