  • How did the British empire become so big? We show you how and why in a comedical yet educational matter in Captain History presents: The Rise of the British Empire. How was the British Empire created is the question we will be answering in this short animated History video!
The British began to establish overseas colonies in the 16th century. By 1783, Britain had a large empire with colonies in America and the West Indies. ... However, in the 19th century, the British built a second worldwide empire, based on British sea-power, made up of India and huge conquests in Africa. At its height, it was the largest empire in history and, for over a century, was the foremost global power. The start date should be the 1490s, while other historians date the empire from the early 1600s. The end of the empire came in the years after World War 2, with most of Britain's colonies ruling themselves independently by the late 1960s.

Just a correction: In Battle of Plassy only 5000 troops of Siraj official where fighting among 50,000 troops while others where just waiting for the king to be killed by Britain. After minor war with Britiany the king argued for the reason of being neutral in the battle field but all of his officials showed him an evil eye and fearing for assassination the king fled but was later assassinated, the only loyal soldiers were the French.

Though often portrayed as such Empire building at its core is not really about greed it is more so about civilisational survival. You could argue that greed certainly plays its part for invested individuals but at its core empire building is about obtaining and securing the strength to survive in a hostile and violent world of various other conquering kingdoms and empires.

London went to war on the continent twice, by own admission, to "balance powers" on the continent...
    London's standpoint, *by own admission:*
"The equilibrium established by such a grouping of forces is technically known as the balance of power, and it has become almost an historical truism to identify England’s secular policy with the maintenance of this balance by throwing her weight now in this scale and now in that, but ever on the side, opposed to the political dictatorship of the strongest single, State or group at a given time."
    Primary source material:
    [Memorandum_on_the_Present_State_of_British_Relations_with_France_and_Germany]
*In a nutshell = the strongest side is the default rival in peace, and the default enemy in war.*
And so the London lords played their "balancing games".
    From: The Complete Yes Minister:
*"Britain has had the same foreign policy objective for at least five hundred years - to create a disunited Europe.*
    *How absolutely funny...*
They gave their diplomatic worst, were proud if it, and millions of young men from the Empire paid the price. Huddled in muddy trenches, getting their heads blown off, or drowning like rats on the seven seas.
That's what you get if you play follow the leader, when these leaders play *"divide and rule"* with the continent, for own gain.
    Millions dead.
    Millions mutilated.
    Too bad.
    So sad.
Price tag for these stupid "games"? *A ruined British Empire.*
    Good riddance.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
They "hopped on the scale" and they "hopped" their way into extinction...
