Some Indians have old parents who often do day care for kids. They are often much cheaper than day care centres. I'm in Auckland but I'm sure even in South Island it will be cheaper to find private people. Having a good network of friends, helps to find such resources. Often, in grocery stores like Countdown and Paknsave, notice boards have very useful information regarding job, accomodation vacancies, day care, etc. Keep a lookout.
Your fluency and use of good English in terms of grammar and syntax is very important. It affects you getting a job and also becomes the difference between a well-paying job and a poorly paid job.

The problem with sciences is you will find yourself on contract (maybe R&D) work, which is not good. As banks will never give you a home loan if your on contract work. Something to think about!
