I strongly disagree that having the points cost of your models behind a paywall is 'salt'.
Rulebooks, faction books and edition changes seems to have become a sort of 'tax' for your minis.
We bought the expensive GW models, we bought the expensive GW paints and the 50 rulebooks to play. We should *not* have to pay again just for the privilage of balancing our army every time GW decides to update the game rules.

@@DRsideburns I haven't actually started playing 40k yet (just getting started myself), but I'm planning on using the "Grimdark Future" rule set from the One Page Rules website. It's a greatly simplified version, but it's free. It even has rules for discontinued and homebrew armies like Squats ("Dwarf Guilds") and space Skaven ("Ratman Clans"). The photography of miniature armies fighting is not in there for you. Your already hyped and sold on the hobby
It’s primary purpose is aspirational motivation for new players. It takes a whole lot of work to get even the stuff in that box playable and they need to motivate and hype new players.

I'm not so sure that it the case and think it would be a massive mistake if it were true. Some one who is brand new to the hobby is then confronted by multiple pages of Golden Daemon standard paint jobs is as likely to be overwhelmed as they are to be inspired. Also, having listened to Uncy Atom, the layout smacks of the days of the disastrous decision to split the White Dwarf into a light weight hobby mag and that disgusting little A5 mag with nothing but pictures of painted models. If you were a subscriber at the time you were lumbered with the latter mag which did nothing for me anyway. Further, this time around the lads at GW state that this box is more for the 40k army that are already committed to the game and the start collecting boxes will be pushed for the newbies. I mean the new box will be pricey enough for a "starter box".

Same reason points are not in there looks like it will have intro scenarios that don't need points a bit like a board game, nothing scares off fresh meat like a sweaty nerd explaining his min maxed army. That chapter approved looks like an armies book book to get you up to date while we wait for Codexes, The other thing was a tournament book! I wont complain about the photography heaviness. This is the perfect "camp book"
No internet at camp, no TV and I can get lost in the photography and really enjoy this type of "Coffee Table" book.
From a "I need to take this with me to the FLGS" sure its big and heavy, but at the price points GW charges for these types of books I expect some meatiness and extras.
I'm sure GW will put out a thinner more "Rules Orientated" book.

I do wish they offered a more 'bare bones' version of the rule book which was purely for the info needed to play, whilst all the fluffy stuff is nice, sometimes when you're playing and looking for a rule having a book which is twice as thick as necessary makes things a tad awkward.
9th ed is looking pretty cool so far, but as usual GW have done goofed which will require an faq to fix fairly sharpish as it outright breaks some setups. 1+ armour saves (which can be achieved in a few ways) can now ONLY be failed on an unmodified 1, so no matter the -AP only a save roll of a 1 will go through.
It feels like these minor cockups are becoming the norm for all GW book releases.

I see a bunch of people complaining about the price, which we haven't officially heard yet, but I've seen it as MSRP of $200. We do know the book by itself is $65 for this special edition. I did some back of the napkin math and figured you're getting something along the lines $500-600 of dudes according to usual GW pricing. Even if you knock decent chunk off to like $400 because it's mono-pose it's a pretty good deal, if you've got the cash of course. Dark Imperium worked itself to around $450, and with a similar cut back maybe more like $300-350. I don't know, seems like some people struggle to get the discounted prices

You may not want that and be paying for it. Guess you could sell it, it's all dependant if the price is right for you.
Otherwise, they will be releasing a starter box for 9th edition and perhaps will have more things (rulers, dice, data cards) that you'll be interested in to start playing.

I've seen the retail price for the box set in the UK for about £100. There's 61 models in the set so forgetting the rulebook it works out around £1.60 per model. I only play casually with some friends and we amend the rules as we see fit depending on the forces in play etc. None of us are serious and always bend the rules to suit our enjoyment. I genuinely get more pleasure from building and painting the models than playing so I'll probably indulge for the sheer amount of models

I don't see how they can put the points behind a paywall. It will propably be a matter of hours before the points end up on some random third party website or pdf for online distribution. If so it will only dilaute games workshop control of things as many will propably just ignore their changes in favour of what the favourite community website says. Honestly if they intend to make an app, hopefully for tablets and not just phones, then it makes a hell of a lot of sense to make a sort of "build your army" feature where you can compose armies using any available unit from the 40k universe and store them online. That way they can do targeted advertisment which caters to your army compositions. It's also a great tool to see how new models are received.

If they could finally catch up with Wizards of the Coast, and start running things like D&D Beyond does things, Warhammer would finally join us in the 2010s. The number one most significant thing that has improved Dungeons & Dragons was the introduction of D&D Beyond so that everyone has access to the core rules and then option to purchase additional rules for their characters as they will and everything is already integrated into be online build app which is free. GW did this they could then make all of these random hard to find books available online as DLC and therefore they would still make their money but people would be able to have the current correct rules. Hell it would even be worth it to have the rules as a subscription service

I have to say I like fluff in books and certainly dig lots of painted model photos as they can give me ideas for army color schemes.
The thing I'm not too keen about is no point values (that's a huge bummer) and if the book only focuses on two factions. If it only focuses on two factions that's really rough. A rundown and some examples of each of the races would have been a big bait and hook for alot of newer players to be interested in non starter box armies. Also, no point values is really not good, as that forces you to buy codex manuals just to get an idea of how to slot these figures into a regular army.
