- Hot Rod Magazine took the two best Shelby vehicles of all time, the 427 Cobra and the new 2011 GT500 Super Snake, to Las Vegas Motor Speedway to find out which is the baddest ever.
Rob Kinnan from Hot Rod and Gary Patterson from Shelby North America race each car on the road course and the drag strip to see which is fastest in the different disciplines. Carroll Shelby tells why he created the Super Snake and shares what his favorite is!
Look for the full feature in the May 2011 issue of Hot Rod Magazine...it is a must see. - Zábava
Rest in peace, Carroll and thank you for everything you did. You are missed.
Listening to that 427 Cobra torquing through the gears as it sliced through the turns gave me goosebumps. The 427 Cobra is the essence of a race car - no frills, no fancy luxuries, just pure power glued to the road. No turbo or supercharger necessary, just brute power - right now. Don't get me wrong, I really, really like the Super Snake but that 427 Cobra is a mean s.o.b.
Put a supercharger on the 427 and it will be no contest.😂
@@craigvoclain1406 No supercharger needed. Shelby AC 427 Cobra is a no-frills car with a badass attitude. With correct tuning, 200 mph was quite easy.
Newer cars may now be faster and more comfortable, but they will never have the soul of a classic.
that doesnt mean anything... racing slicks on the ac cobra would change the race. plus the ac is naturally aspirated. its comparing two different things
+Su Sang yes it does the cobra was never sold with a turbo, super charger ext! They are stock cars, slicks won't pick up a full second on the track and if it did it would still lose.. Since we are comparing them look at the power to weight ratio, the mustang weighs twice as much as the cobra..
The original super snake had the shelby body but 800 hp engine. I believe only 2 were made unfortunately.
I agree RomVlad. I had a 2014 Mustang GT that I bought new, had it for 2 years and got bored with it. Traded it on a 2013 Shelby GT500. As insane as that was it was still boring to me. Too refined. Too luxurious. Fun to drive and take to car shows but was lacking the "soul" that you speak of. It was just another late model car.
Kurt Mardis I think otherwise the 2013 gt 500 is great combination of retro and modern. The knob shifter is right on the money. The luxurious things like the Microsoft sync navigation are optional so it's up to you. Overall, that 5.8 662 hp v8 is definitely not boring since it is the last model Shelby himself had input on. Also it depends on the color of the car the metallic colors tend to be more attractive like the sterling gray metallic and ruby red.
Carroll Shelby was a true automotive legend and created some of the most amazing cars.
I love it! 50 year old technology still kicking ass.
12.9 1/4 mi in a cobra ! Sandbagging at it's best to make that Super Snake look good !
The Mustang is heavy. Every 1000 lbs = 120 hp. The AC weighs what, 2200 lbs? 600 hp 427 side oiler with the lemans alum. rods?....
That Cobra should be running middle 10's without trouble.
@@Zero-Fox-Garage on street tires mid to low 11's but yeah he tossed it.
No doubt the stang was a 3.73 gear vs cobras much lower 3.24 gear cause 1500lbs and 200hp vs cobra should have been a mismatch..
My 07 and my 10 supersnake would destroy the Shelby cobra. The cobra is fast with 500hp but my supersnake my coupe has 900hp.Think about it 900hp. My convertible has 650hp.Its no slouch but the coupe with no cats long tubes layer down 810hp to the tire. Its just nuts.
That's a man that changed the world for me.... even after he's gone his legacy keeps on and will probably change the lives of many forever... Carroll Shelby- you were the icon of this era.. lots of smokey burnouts and fast lap times on your own personal track up in racer heaven
I've always liked my Mustangs but you just gotta tip your hat to a 427 Cobra, just absurdly awesome.
RIP Carroll Shelby
427 is the King hands down
1290 for a cobra with 550 horsepower, that's slow, why don't you put some drag radials on it like the Mustang had... Not a fair race
Botched shift too
They were sandbagging! The Cobra is faster ! I call Bullshit!
45 years and the cobra keeps amazing !!
427 Cobra...Not bad numbers for a 50 year old car w/out slicks.
Still the undisputed king of turning heads and looking bad ass.
Only a 12.9 out of a 550HP Cobra? I've seen low elevens out of those. Tell those dudes how to drive that Cobra.
rwalfrey I here ya I love Fords that's a low time I went to high school with a buddy he ran 14s in a old dodge dart with a 400 not really built at all
Im traveling close to say......the mustang sucks next to the COBRA.....not even close in blvd racing!
rwalfrey Factory Five with the Coyote turns 12.1.
Robert LaPointe r
Low 11s? It should be doing no less than mid 10s. Also, notice that they didn't heat up the cobra's tires.
I'll take the 427 cobra any day.
The best CZcams videos about cars, are the ones where there is no one talking.
The 427 is just too amazing. It is quite simply the definition of American muscle.
427 any day all day
I built the 427 Cobras, test drove at Riverside, about 20 laps. Test drove every one, all 350 built for 30 mins. Good job fun to drive.
Id still have the cobra... hands down
same here the 427 cobra HAS THE GREATEST RUMBLE EVER TO IT 😅..!!
Yep mine too
Is that willow springs race day up in Lancaster california
Raceway sorry
Carrol Shelby, you the man
Met him once. He signed about 6 die cast cars, glove box door from 65 my GT 350 tribute car and was super nice and down to earth. He definitely contributed while on this earth. A great Texan an full of BS in his day. Liked to party too. RIP Carroll
They didn't even drive the Cobra to its fullest, they gave a huge advantage to the wannabe Cobra by giving it slicks on a drag strip. A Cobra with a real driver and a pair of slicks can pull a high to mid ten if it wanted to.
Really what year is your shelby
@@anthonylaudano9751 Just imagine 1:4 power to weight ratio. A 2000 pound car pushing 550 to the wheels. It held the fastest 0-60 time for 21 years…
@@DesirzZNetwork Yah man I totally agree.
@@DesirzZNetwork I hate when people hate on either car.Especially when I hear I can build a super snake in my garage.Yes maybe they can build a clone. But what's more valuable a 427 cobra kit car or a real 427 cobra.Of course the real 427 cobra. The exact same thing with my super snakes that iam very lucky to own.I am sure you agree.
Happy with mine but I'd love to rock that 427 beast
The 1966 Ford AC Cobra 427 is the GOAT of cars, there is nothing better.
this old retired guy in my neighborhood just finished fully restoring an old cobra a few months ago. u can here that thing's engine a miles away(no exaggeration). jogged by his house the other day and saw the guy outside his house. asked him about the car and he even gave me a ride. best time of my life. that thing pulls u back in the seat so hard i'm surprised my body didn't rip through the seat and rear and out the back of the car. and the noise it makes... i just don't know how to describe it
The AC looks like a beast and the SC looks just like all the other mustangs.
with a special body kit it should be nicer
of corse the mustang looks lke the others its a brand name it has to look like the rest
the cobra is and was so good it took Shelby over 50 years to best it. It IS definitely the baddest of all times
8878
Not best it! They had to lie to make the mustang look good
The baddest? Tell you what, park them side by side and tell people they can try them. I'm at the back of the fucking huge Cobra line....
RIP Carroll Shelby, without you the car world wouldnt be what it is today.
As a diehard STang fan, I have no problems with a 427 Cobra besting the GT500. Much respect to the Cobra. I wish I had both of them.......
Did you see the tachs on the drag race segment. The Guy driving the Cobra babied the motor. He pulled it at 5,800,, while the Mustang was operating in the red, over 6 grand. This was not a drag race, it was an add for the one that they are selling now.
A-Men! From a tru Ford Blood Brother!
6,500 RPM on any of the forged twin cam engines is a major shortshift.I pulled my Whippled Terminator to 7,000rpm and the HP curve never flattened out(still climbing). You have to dyno them past the HP peak to realize how much they make ,and at what rpm.I see these cars regularly shifting at 6,500 on UTube vids.Hell, a long stroke 427 can match those numbers at peak power.Starting to see some 8,000rpm Coyotes out there lately, and in a race, that's where a twin cam should be for top performance.
Thank you Carroll Shelby. For making some of the baddest most fun cars ever produced, my cobra mustang wouldn't exist today without you. You
are without a doubt THE REAL SNAKE MAN!!!!!
427 cobra was faster then that .Held the record for 0-100-0 for what ?? 30 years give me a break,a galaxy with a 427 ran 13 seconds
VERY TRUE THEY WERE VERY AHEAD OF THE TIME.I HAVE 2 SUPER SNAKES AND THERE JUST A WORK OF ART LOL BASICALLY A STREET LEGAL RACE CAR.MY 10 900hp SUPER SNAKE COUPE IS NUTS.LOL EVEN MY 07 427 EDITION CONVERTIBLE SUPER SNAKE IS REALLY FAST AND THEY WERE VERY MUCH UNDERRATED! THEY WERE RATED 605HP BUT THERE MORE LIKE 650 700hp AT THE CRANK AND WITH GOOD TIRES AND GOOD DRIVING SKILLS THERE A 11 SECOND CAR ALL DAY.
when they invent the time machine I will go rite back to the 60s
When the AC Cobra is in town the Vetts go run and hide))))
Yep vettes cry and whine
But they all shut up when an old Supra shows up...with a big blower on it.
I have a 750 hp 2014 GT500 that's going to be taken to 825 hp this winter. Thanks for the Sweet ride Mr. Shelby(RIP)!!!!!
Carroll Shelby was the last american muscle icon. Whether you are a Mopar, GMC, or Ford supporter, you must give respect to a man who revolutionized the sports car world. Carroll Shelby, may your spirit live on in all that is muscle and nasty fast. R.I.P good friend, R.I.P.
This is a mustang commercial. They put slicks on the mustang for the drag strip..
Carol shelby R.I.P
Mr. Shelby was well beyond any other car designers. Something that is admirable as when earth was created.
Rest in Peace Sir.
What an amazing company Shelby America Carroll Shelby it was a honour. What a legend.
The cobra has panache, the SS is just another mustang...
the supersnake isnt just another mustang. -.-
+William Penate yea, it is. Mustangs are like assholes an opinions. Everyone either has or had one.
@@ROTAXDLOL DON'T BE A HATER LOL
Shelby is the best american car ever made... If it wasn't for the Shelby we would probably all be driving slow ass commuter cars
Ben, the 64 Mustang was not a muscle car. It was labeled as a pony car. The Camaro was also a pony car. Not a muscle car. Most agree that the first "muscle car" was the 1964 Pontiac GTO.
You guys forget the RAMCHARGERS!
Seeing the two side by side is like looking at a grandfather next to his grandson....thank you and godspeed Carroll Shelby
Shelby was the last of our home grown auto engineers. Tough old guy with a passion for cars. RIP my friend.
carrol you are the best!
I'll take the Cobra!
Love you Carroll Shelby! Keep living and doing an AWESOME job with these mustangs!!
Wow, that last statement is mind blowing. I can afford a fiberglass bodied cobra, never an aluminum bodied one. I have three 289's, that would be feasibly. That's Mr. Shelby, I will build one like you did. R.I.P.
I'm not sure what kind of modified side oiler is in the cobra but something isn't right with it...they redline at 7,200 rpm and the guy was shifting it at 5,800 and the engine sounds like it is topping out...a real mid sixties medium riser side oiler gets scary fast from 6,000 to 7,200...I know as I had a 67 fairlane that me and my Dad put a side oiler in after he got tired of the 390.
@Zsavage1 full out? revving that motor to redline is way better for it than sitting around in a garage. dude sandbagged it, no question!
45 years more advanced and it still got its ass HANDED to it on the road course. That dragrace was a joke. And one of your reasons the new one is better is creature comforts?? Really lame to compare things one car has to another that was built before those comforts even existed...... And finally, 45 years from now no one will remember the 2011, but the 427 will STILL be a classic.
***** and 1500lb less weight. Creature comforts add weight.
Charlie Dee is a moron. The 427 Cobra is nothing but a race car, hence the low weight....and the slightly faster track time (and the need for a pillow behind the drivers back LOL). Do the math, the 427 is about 1hp per 4.47 lbs......while the super snake is 1hp per 5.26 lbs. Considering all the extra stuff the super snake has, and it's extra weight, it did damn well.
It wont be the classic the cobra is, but it will defently be a remembered classic
I did the math. And the answer is fuck you.
charlie dee LOL spoken like a true brat. A least you're smart enough to talk shit over the internet, than in person.
BTW, losing by a half second, to a dedicated race car, is "HANDED to it"???
I remember when I met Mr. Shelby himself he went to Woodrow Wilson high school for a reunion and well being a student there at the time i still revered him he is truly a legend.
Thank you Mr.Shelby for building such badass machines !!!
That Cobra was so so ahead of it's time.
Anyone else notice that the super snake got to run slicks on the dragstrip while the 427 Cobra ran the same tires as the road course?!?!?! If all things were the same, that super snake would have spun the first 200 feet of that drag race!
would have spun the full 1/4 lol
I'm G.M. LS1 man to the bone and own the last model T/A which is loaded. But my youngest Daughter is named Shelby for one reason. R.I.P. Carrol Shelby. Your cars are awesome!! Can only hope to own an original Shelby someday.
Before watching the end I'm gonna say the Cobra since it's so light. I hear it's hard to control though.. especially without all the safety measures like ABS and stability control. Afterthoughts.. yep figured the Super Snake would kill at the drag strip.. power overcomes eventually. Cool they had Carroll Shelby in the video!!
I would get the Cobra or eleanor or the ford GT
the cobra 427 is 50 years old they cant judge it
Classic for me any day. For a car built that long ago to still be able to compete with a new super car today is really saying something.
i saw an article about a 66 S/C the owner had a standard cobra upgraded to s/c configured just like one he had in 66-70. It was a 6,000 mile original added webber injection(it was an option, and his new one had it) he told the magazine once a year he wrings it out at a shelby meet. It turned high 9 seconds un-corked on slicks.
They probably ran road course tires on the cobra so as not to damage the drivetrain if it got too much traction. Shame.. I believe it would have won the quarter mile easily as it still holds the record for 0-100-0 and I believe they figured back then it was a high 10, low 11 sec car with traction.
I'll have both. How about that
The original Super Snake was the 427 AC Cobra with twin Paxton superchargers. Only two were ever built, but they definitely would have blown the doors of the Mustang Super Snake.
the lil 20 min converstation i had with smokey helped me figure out what was wrong with the Holley carb i had on my truck done had it worked on 3 or 4 times still the same issue . he told me to check the bottom mounting plate for a crack that the 750cfm double pumpers were bad about cracking between the front 2 barrels so when i got home i cranked it up sprayed some WD-40 at the base and sure enough it was cracked like you said so much knowledge taken away from us
Put a driver in the AC Cobra and slicks and their would have been a different outcome ........God forbid a 50 year old car embarrassed a modern day flagship car of today and with a shitload more horsepower ......lol
.......
Put a decent driver in I take it, most of those guys are editors of car mags so therefore they must have some sort of driving skills 🙄..!!
A modern day flagship car of today was a bit redundant Sorry about that being the one to point out the obvious 😡..!!
@@65coupestang How is that redundant? Because it's true and your butt is hurt as a result?
@@JoRgEChavez-to2xd 'modern day' and 'of today'...pick one you don't need both. Point stands: put a good driver w. slicks in the AC Cobra and it mops the floor.
@@dylangray6931 Lol I get it. It's a double positive if there is such a thing. I think what he meant is that it's the modern day version of what the concept is using a car from today. It's always weird how thoughts don't translate into words properly without a good amount of thought behind what is being expressed and how.
One goes for about 1 million, enough said
GOD DAMN!!! I love the original Shelby Cobra. Ever since the first time I saw it as a kid, it's been my favorite car. It's it epitome of sports car: Tires, Body, Engine & drivetrain, and GO
No one will ever replace carroll shelby but his cars will continue to show chevy, mopar and others whose boss as thay have always done. R.I.P.
That's a little bias. Throwing slicks on the SS, but not the Cobra?
ahhh. something wrong with that AC427. the REAL 427 cobra went from zero to 60MPH.... AND BACK DOWN TO ZERO... in 10seconds.... the real 427cobra runs LOW 11's in the quarter mile.
yep, no way a cobra runs 12.9
Maybe those Good Year Eagles don't work on strip? They are designed for pure asphalt. Not rubbered strip tarmac.
no its just when you hand some one the keys to a car valued at (imagine Dr. EVIL) ONE MILLION DOLLARS ,your boss, your wife and the cars owner will be watching you trying not to beat on said collectors item. SS can be replaced at Ford dealer...
The 289 cobra was faster than both of those...on the road corse
So you have a 427 cobra
very nice video would like either one thank you
I did notice in the video the Cobra is going through the gears and the spedo is dropping in speed. Still enjoyed the video. When you can even get close to the times of a full sized Mustang with a 50 year old car it's amazing.
the drag is BS why the mustang had drag tires and the cobra didn't.... I think the mustang is a really cool car as much as the cobra. but the mustang is a fast car the cobra is a fun toy.
And they also needed a driver in the AC as well ......
yes they do/
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the cobra already has slicks on it. And stock tires (even if they are special purpose built tires for the mustang) with all that power definitely wouldn't get down the track as quickly as it did, so I think they were leveling the playing field a bit with the drag slicks on the mustang.
now compare price tags,,,,
You know your seats are bad when you put a pillow in your car 4:50
R.I.P Carroll Shelby 1923-2012.....you total legend :'(
Where are the slicks for the Cobra ? 12.90 in the 1/4 when you have to peddle it the whole way ! Put 19+ rims on it for the road coarse and it would have spanked that Snake even more so !
that's not a fair comparison. I wanna see carol shelbys personal super snake cobra take on any new mustang but I don't think anybody wants to risk a car worth millions to prove it.
Saw a cobra in my neoghborhood once. got real excited i thought someone had just got one but i never saw it again.
Now that you mention it, I do seem to remember either reading about those or possibly seeing one when I was a youngster. I remember seeing a cobra that didn't quite look right.
5:13 Carrol says fuck both of 'em. I built my own that's more badass than either of these.
hahaha
what no slicks for the cobra on the dragstrip ... LAAAAME
I have rode in the first ever made cobra before and it was the car I had ever rode in and now it's by far my favorite car
RIP Carroll Shelby, you made fine cars and although I'm a giant mopar fan, I'm honored to own a GT500
RIP Mr. Shelby
i say old school cobra.....
R.I.P Mr.Shelby you did the world good with your awesome cars and i am honoured to own a signed 427 cobra
Nothing beats having an original Shelby Cobra 427. Have that over any car in the world ever made!
No slicks on cobra really lame
Definitely the 427
Evan Hesher without a doubt, I'm working to buy one by next year. Can't wait, who needs creature comforts when you are driving a legend.
Carrol I will personally miss you. Have have built some of the baddest Fords ever, as a matter a fact you made the Mustang what it is one awesome American Muscle car. So thank You and rest in peace my mentor!
Both are fantastic cars in relation to the eras they were introduced...just amazing...the thing I noticed was how weights have changed...the original was a waif like 2450 lbs...and the new one almost 4,000....you would think modern cars would be lighter not heavier...
Lol the super snake is a disgrace to the original 427 super snake with over 800 hp. The 427 eats the super snakes lunch. The shelby even beats it in a lap despite having less horsepower.
the 2013 supersnake is way better as is the 2013 shelby 1000
34Floaty yeah, looking at the stats, the 2011 was waaaay heavier
And 200HP more, it's a wash... And I seriously doubt the air conditioning was on in the SS.
34Floaty .n
You have to remember that the Cibra is also 2500 horsepower. The Cobra was meant to race. The mustang just has more horsepower for the sole reason of having more.
Ford The Best!
I think u meant to say Shelby
Toss me the keys to that Cobra any day for any reason. I love my 2015 S550, but the Cobra has been my dream car since '98 when Test Drive 5 came out on Playstation.
Update a year after this comment: I've got my Cobra now too!
Love them both. There is one car short here though. The GT.
The real shelby cobra is faster. Top speed 220
Not a chance, 150-160 at best with that level of power. Just too much wind resistance and lousy aero...IOW, they want to fly. Fastest any open-topped 'Cobra' has been is right at 200.
seen one of these .....near the tv,,,,,good too
R.I.P . Love you Carroll for just being you and what you did for the sport and hobby. Show the big guy in the sky what a Shelby can do in the 1/4. God bless
R.i.p Carroll Shelby now he is pimpin angels with supercharged v8s
