    I was actually there at the first Cobra vs. Ferrari international race at the Nürburgring circuit in 1964. The favorites in the Sports Car class were the three factory 250 GTO Ferraris, but Carrol Shelby , along with the cooperation of Ford had three (maybe it was two, I'm getting old) original race-prepared Cobras with the 289 V8 entered. I remember sneaking into the pit area, and seeing the Cobras up close (I was 17 at the time) and those 4 2-barrel sidedraft Weber setups were impressive! Long story short, all the Cobras fell out of the race due to mechanical troubles, but while they were running, WOW! I specifically remember one of the Cobras leave the pits at the same time as one of the Ferraris, with the Cobra following the Ferrari into the hairpin at the end of the pit straight, and then when they both came out of the corner to accelerate up the hill behind the pits, that Cobra passed the Ferrari like he was tied to a stump! By the time the Cobra went out of sight, he was at least 200 ft. ahead of the Ferrari! Things like that stay with you all your life, and it made me so proud to be an American!

      That little 289 Shelby Cobra could shut down a lot of big muscle cars too, it was no slouch on the strip or road course. I think it had well over 300 HP, but the stock Hi-Po 289 had 271 and was a tire smoking son-of-a-gun. (even though they routinely got thumped by just about every muscle car on the road.)

    A couple of comments for the curious, yes this is almost certainly either a Shelby continuation car or, given the bare aluminum body, a Kirkham replica (Kirkham supplies some of the bodies/chassis for Shelby American now) Somebody mentioned that the dash layout isn't 'original', it is in fact correct for a 427 SC car of which very few were made. This car is setup as a 427SC so it is obviously using the SC dash layout for that reason. Also, the same poster mentioned that the steering wheel doesn't say AC citing that as an error. That is not an error, only the 289 Cobra models were supplied with steering wheels that read AC on the button from Shelby. All big block cars except one were supplied with a steering wheel that had one of two Cobra designs in it, the one on this car reflects one of those designs and is correct in that regard.

  • @shananagans5
    @shananagans5 Před 10 lety +9

    The thing with the Cobra & replicas is there is 1,000 different ways they can be built. I would take a well built Cobra over a Ferrari any day but this only means this particular Cobra is faster than the Ferrari. A cheap kit that uses a 5.0 Mustang as a donor is a hot car for the money but is a far cry from a real Cobra. A quality aluminium bodied replica with a 427 & the proper parts is very close to an original.
    That's what I like about the current Cobra replicas. Originals are so rare & expensive an original is not practical to go have fun with, even if you have the money but you can buy or build a replica to fit virtually any budget. You can go with something that uses a 5.0 Mustang donor for less than a new Toyota up to an aluminium bodied 427 that is a near clone, rivet for rivet, of an original.

    • @aportilla007
      @aportilla007 Před 9 lety +2

      ..still cost ya much less than the Ferrari. With the cost of that Ferrari you can build one hell of a Cobra.

    • @shananagans5
      @shananagans5 Před 9 lety +2

      Alejandro Portilla A high end, aluminium bodied Cobra with a period correct racing engine will cost you what a new Ferrari will cost and it won't depreciate like a new Ferrari will. Of course, it will never appreciate either.
      For 200 K or so you could get an older Ferrari that is likely to appreciate.
      The Cobra will always be worth what the car is, in that cost will be determined by the quality of the body, the quality of the engine & parts on the car as well as the overall condition. Age doesn't matter much. That's why it won't depreciate much if kept in like new condition but it will never go up in value. There will never be a collectors value on a kit car.

      shananagans5 Travel down to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. I'm not sure if they moved, but they made REAL Cobras there. You could get a top notch rolling chassis for about 150k. That would have been for the fiberglass body. They also can be had with aluminum and carbon fiber bodies.........carbon fiber being really expensive. Then they'd have to be shipped to special speed shops for engine and trans, you pick which combination you want. Figure another 30-40k. If you got the change, that's where to go...........

    There are books out there that detail the history of the Cobra and a Cobra registry for the real ones. All told, there were just less than a thousand original Cobras made in several body styes and chassis styles during the orginal run made by the original AC Cars. Anything after that is either a continution model or a replica All orginals had hand formed aluminum bodies. Original motors were 260 cid Fords later moving up to 289 cid then 427/428 cid motors. Everything was origally designed for road racing. The first models were modified AC Ace's.

The Cobra ran a 10.40 and I ran an 8.30. Of course I had a 571 Cubic Inch NASCAR All Aluminum Chevy engine in it with 850 HP! It was a Scream! However if I had a choice of either car or the girl, I would take the girl!

      Actually that isn't a wise thing to do in those cars. they have such tremendous grip a person can break running gear part's. I did a brake job on a 1967 big block Corvette some years ago. and when I got done I went and road tested it. and while I was doing that I thought I would see if it would burn some rubber. and got a surprise I about ripped the rear differential out of the car. with independent rear suspension they aren't designed to to lay down rubber. they are sports cars they are designed to handle good not burn rubber.

      The legend was that they were running the same quarter-mile times as the current top-dog cars like the Redeyes, GT500s, C8s, etc. The reality was the 14s, 15s, 16s (and slower depending on the weak 6 cylinder engines they put in some of the late 60s cars) and the fastest ones, secretly tuned before being turned over for magazine articles, were in the mid-13s. That being said, it was known that with drag slicks, headers, 4.56 gearing, etc., Hemicudas with such mods could run in the 10s. The exeptions, not the rules.

    • @callang9
      @callang9 Před 2 lety +1

      @@culcune production muscle cars in the 60s were running ~ 15-17 second quarter miles with automatics, and 13-15 second quarter miles with manuals.
      1970 Boss 429 ran 12.3s quarter mile on a 5.5s 0-60... which is crazy if you compare it to other low 12s cars nowadays, which generally run 0-60s in the 3 second range.
      Anyway, 60s was before the clean air act, so you shouldn't compare these cars to modern cars, since they had less regulations.
      But 12.3s before muscle cars learned efficiency outside of power (aerodynamics, weight, drivetrain losses, transmission) is impressive.

      @@callang9 Boss 429 Mustangs were handbuilt specialty cars as well, not a production car that rolled off an assembly line. Their engines were more akin to the handbuilt GT500 engines of today since the Boss cars were the only cars that engine made it into.

      @@culcune @culcune To me, a production car is a car intended for road use, and one that the manufacturer produces before selling (ie you don't have to special order a car, or buy a car then go thru third party)
      As for it being hand built, virtually every car prior to the ~70s would be considered handbuilt nowadays, as the automation of the auto assembly line didn't come till ~1970.

      @@callang9 They were built through a third party, Kar Kraft (don't quote me on that). I guess I would have to agree with you, overall, but the fact that a third party had a hand in them makes me think of them more as a race car than a car from an assembly line. Really, I am not trying to argue with you, but the 'Boss Nine' was more of an exception than the rule.
