      Even with that taken into consideration, Tommi deserved to win after the hard work he put into crawling it back after a bad start to the season. He won the previous three rallies, and he probably would have won the championship by getting a podium finish if that oil patch incident didn't happen.
      Carlos was smug about this accident and got too ahead of himself. He got exactly what he had coming to him.

      @@lotusraptos You forget that in the Australian rally, Tommi jump the exit to a stage and should be penalized, which would have given the victory to Carlos Sainz in that rally and would have left him leader for the last race...

      @lotusraptos Před 4 lety +9

      @@Alonso-mt9sc A year late, but even if the penalty was warranted (it wasn't), then that would still mean Tommi would be champion. Sainz didn't crash into the the barriers because the marshalls slowed him. If Sainz went first, he would have crashed into the barriers too, and the relatively bulletproof Mitsubishi would have made it to the end of the rally.

      @@prisonermonkeys8613 Well Ralliart deconstructed that penalty by appealing on the fact that in 98 the starting procedure was not that clear, with a clock at the start and a manual "go!" too, with differences from round to round, so the rules were flawed and the penalty could not be applied. Technically fair, but from the sport point of view that's really unfair.
      What saddens me the most is not the penalty, it's that all the Corollas had defective pistons for that round. Brundle and Sainz retired for that reason, and while Auriol retired for clutch issues, the next day he had his car fixed for some media runs, and guess what: the engine was spitting pistons.

    It was obviously heartbraking for Sainz, but there definitely was fairness in this, because he was warned about the oil on the road before, and would have crashed just like Mäkinen if not for the warning. And this failure can be attributed to his car and/or support team, unlike Mäkinen's crash which was totally beyond his or his team's responsibility.

    Tbh tommi deserved the title more than Carlos that year his engine failed on 2 rallies while he was leading and on another when he was somwhere in the top 6 while carlos' failed once (granted it was at the worst possible time) not to mention that tommi probably wouldn't have retired on the RAC because he was the only driver not to know about the oil being first on the road. Carlos is an amazing driver but Tommi was better IMO and seemed humble and less cocky. I used to feel really sorry for Carlos about what happened that day and still do but definetly less now that he seemed to be a dick about Tommi's misfortune of not being allowed to continue the rally

      Carlos had a lot of bad luck on RAC Rally. In 89 he lost first place few stages before end of rally. In this year won Pentti Airikkala. In 91 he lost title on RAC Rally. In 92 he got title on RAC Rally. And in 98 he lost title again.. Carlos really have a bad luck on RAC Rally.
      But you're right. Tommi was better driver. Yes, Carlos won many of rallyes, too. But Tommi was true 'Flying Fin'.

    • @perussaataja
      @perussaataja Před 9 lety +9

      Sainz lost points due punctures in Catalonya and Corsica (he was on a podium place in Spain and also in Corsica, or 4th, when it happened) in that season, not to mention he did not retire due his own mistake, where as Tommi crashed in Monte and Portugal. Tommi was faster, Sainz more consistant. Being consistant is how Richard Burns (RIP) won his title in 2001. In overall terms, Mäkinen was unbeatable in 1996-99 but seemed to have lost his magic 2000 onwards, especially being beaten by Solberg in Subaru 2002-3 and only came close to title in 2001. Sainz on the otherhand kept up scoring wins throughout his career and was in the title fight in 2000, 2001 and 2003 and beat Grönholm in a fair fight in Argentina 2004, when he was in his 40s.

      @@sennasound Wrong. Carlos didn't fully deserve the 1995 Championship as much as Colin McRae. That was definitely without any shadow of a doubt was well deserved by Colin. He also deserved 1997 and 2001, as the reliablity issues really dragged him down. 1998 also sucked for Colin because reliablity issues hindered not only the championship, but also a 1-2 for the McRae brothers. That would have been spectacular to see...
      I'd even argue 2000 and 2002 could also fall under the same bracket (reliablity), but more so for '97 and '01 because he lost those years by one and two points respectively.

      @@lotusraptos You have your own opinion on what happened in Catalunya 1995, Carlos was not agree with the team orders he want to fight, and both Calos and Colin have the agreement to continue fighting and subaru stop both, to win the costructors championship but at the last time Colin thougths change, and push, when Carlos is not pushing at all, in fact Colin, have an excuse with Moya and Sainz days before and he said that he was his fault not been honest, wich was a great gesture.Carlos was leadind all rally, Colin was pushing, but I think Carlos could win this rally with no team orders.
      This year Carlos win in Montecarlo and Portugal, and where faster than colin on the asphalt events, like Corsica.
      Also remember that Carlos was injured at new zealand and he did not run there(Colin wins),and was not 100% in Australia, where he broke the car engine. For that and for me Colin DON'T really deserve to win this year. Anyway, Colin was and incredible talent, mybe the fastest driver I ever seen, potentially speaking, he was amazing to see him driving, his skills were incredible, he deserve more titles 1997,1998 sure even 1999, 2001 was amazingly fast, but make a huge mistake on Rac rally, those mistakes, that other drivers does not do that often. But if he didn't crash he was unbeatable sometimes.Of couse is my opinion you have yours..

    I remember this and the pettiness of the police really annoyed me. Any integer country in Europe would have let him keep going.

      Stewart Murray Or give him police escort on the road back to service, like Sainz had in Australia '01, or Loeb in Mexico '05. Not European countries, but still, British police likes stopping damaged cars a bit too much...

    @XLStress well the job of co-driver is to ''read'' upcoming corners... therefore he had in his notes that the end of stage is near... however, he was clearly furious, so maybe he simply dint notice that...

    from what i heard, it was one of the pistons that failed right at that moment. it was a known issue and apparently they showcased that happening to the other corolla later on
