    Great video. with my experience I would add the following cons:
    - I switched to an all black, exterior background (from the unviersal rock background), and my fish's colors improved so much I could not believe they were the same fish. The universal rock background completes with the fish's colors for sure and washes them out.
    - I had a problem with a dead fish, and detritus collecting behind the background, not a healthy situation for water quality.
    - I found the background very cumbersome for hiding filter tubes, heaters, etc. I went to an overflow system to my sump and there are not tubes at all showing.
    All in all, if you are really into the "rocky biotype look", the universal background are very expensive but you may be pleased. If you are into maximizing the colors of your fish, tank sanitation, room and ease of maintenance I would recommend against.

    Great video. I had an aquarium with a background. It took up a heap of space in the tank, plus my fish found a way to get behind it and ended up only coming out when the light was off!! Love how you have Clown Loaches with your Africans. I've done the same with my tank.

    I love the look of your tank however you hit on the cons that made me say no to the background. I have a 210 gallon because I wanted more space for my fish and I can't imagine loosing any of that space just for looks. I keep African cichlids too and I just have a few large rocks for decoration. For my background I use textiles mounted on thin shower board on the back of my tank. If I get tired of my background or want to change it I just go to my local fabric shop, it's cheap and easy and I think it looks nice. Thanks for sharing your information. :)

    are HANG ON BACK filters not recommended with these backgrounds... only made to use with canister filters ?

    • @adamc7918
      @adamc7918  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I wouldn't say it has to be canisters, they probably just work a little better because you can put the intake lower in the water column which helps with water circulation depending on tank size. If you use hang on back I'd also add a jet for water circulation

    So... I have the same exact background from Universal Rocks. I didn't have to cut mine. It was formed with side or end 'panels' if you will, that goes up against the glass perfectly. Not sure how to really explain that better. From the side is the tank, you can't see behind the piece. It goes all the way back and gifts what's behind. Anyway, there's no way for anything to get on the sides of it or behind. I have a Fluval fx5 but there's no way to put the return on the front side of the formation. I'm at a loss for a solution.

    great video mate the tank looks lovely 👍, i am new to this game bought fluval 240 and my 3d background came yesterday , one of the things was wondering about was the water behind background , mines is close to being flush with back of tank would say biggest space between background be 2 inches, would drilling a few holes where can't be seen be enough to filter or would i need 1 behind background .cheers

      +irish rich hi Irish glad you are getting into the hobby. I now have another tank with a thin background if you want to watch some of my recent videos. it maybe has an inch behind it at most and I don't do anything back there. with 2 inches it wouldn't hurt to probably drill some small holes just to be safe. also a little trick I do is while I'm doing a water change I gently press on the background and it lightly pushes some of the buildup back there out into the tank where I can remove it

    Why do you not simple prepare the bg in a way the fishes can swim behind it.
    Sawing some parts away from the bg.

    is there another output other than the spray bar on the sunsun? how do I use the sunsuns with the background?

    • @adamc7918
      @adamc7918  Před 8 lety

      hi Paris, on the sun sun you can either do the spray bar or just let it come out the end of the tube with a plastic attachment if u want. there is plenty of room behind the background for your intakes if u want. you'd just have to cut a couple small holes in the background so water easily flows behind it

    I had a 3D background years ago, it looked great the first month. Three months later it was covered with ugly black hair algae everywhere. It was impossible to remove the algae. The 3D background occupied a lot of space in the tank. 4 months later I trashed the background. I will never buy another 3D background again. You are better off with a printed background you tape behind your tank.

      according to who? The aquarium background police? It can be as thick or thin as you want it to be. As long as the swim space left is enough for the fish, that's all that matters.
