  • Join us as we take you through our top destinations in the UK for winter vanlife adventures. We love our VW campervan and love getting out and using it ALL year round. Winter in a campervan is very different to in the summer, but no less rewarding.
    We are Richard and Jackie and we live in the UK. We retired from teaching at the age of 51 in the summer of 2022. Our plans for early requirement include relocating to the Yorkshire Dales, developing our forever home and travelling the UK, Europe and eventually the world in our VW campervan Nelson.
    Please subscribe and like our videos if you like what you see.

    As a northerner, Geordie, and having lived many years in Cheshire, and now in Sussex, 30+ years, you're so lucky living in Yorkshire and able to access all the wonderful areas you've just show cased, so easily. One day, I hope we can return to live in the north, even though we love Sussex, Kent, Hampshire, Dorset etc. We will be in Northumbria next summer for a holiday, when, I'm sure, my Geordie accent will make a reappearance 😄❤️🚐Roll on Summer, meanwhile, enjoy yourselves in the French Alps 🏔️ xx

      We have been in the Dales for just over a year now and love it up here. It’s just an hour to Ambleside and less than 2 hours to Scotland. One place we have never really explored is Northumberland - we spent one day on holy island and at Bamburgh castle so it’s still one for our bucket list 🚐 the Alps have been fab so far ⛷️

    Your video really shows what wonderful countryside we have on our doorstep.
    Some of the Wainwrights are definitely better to do in the winter when the ground is frozen, otherwise the ground is extremely boggy.

      There are definitely some Wainrights we have wished we did on a frosty day 🤣 what’s great is we know there is a whole new world out there that we haven’t even discovered yet, especially in the south of England 🚐

    Inspiring list - thanks. We've been to a few of those places during spring/summer but not in winter so it'll be good to revisit those. Mind you Gt Langdale was like mid-winter when we were there in summer anyway though 😂 We have tried a few S coast areas in deep winter and had some great times on the beaches around Dorset on frozen and sub-zero days and in the New Forest etc. Yet another vlog that is making me look forward to our May Outer Hebrides trip even more!

      You’ll love the outer Hebrides. We went in May half term once it was really pretty with the spring flowers and we actually had a couple of days sunbathing and swimming! We need to explore more of the south now we have more time 🚐

    Lovely video, Yorkshire Dales is great and very good point on being summer based but still places to find isn’t there in the winter. Lakes is so much nicer out of season isn’t it. How unlucky for the flood warming and then flooding - crikey.
    We are from the North East so related to the places, some great suggestions.
    Have a lovely Christmas 🎄
    All the very best, David & Rachel 👍

      The North East is still somewhere we need to explore more. We drove down from one of our Scottish trips and spent a night by lindisfarne and a day on the island but that’s it. I think we will love a week up there on the beaches x

    Hello, thanks for sharing your tips for winter vanlife. Made me smile when you said "as soon as there was any wintery conditions, we would head out", the opposite of what most people would do. Just interested, do you have all weather tyres on your van or do you find standard tyres have been fine on your more wintery trips? Many thanks for sharing your experiences - its great inspiration!

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  Před 6 měsíci +1

      We swapped to all weather tyres this year as we are in the alps for several weeks and probably should have had them in on a couple of our winter trips in the Cairngorms. We travel with snow chains just incase and obviously in the alps they are obligatory. We love it out on the hills and by the coast in winter - there’s no bugs and very few people 🤣🚐

    We just started enjoying your channel. We are curious as to what you both taught. We think Richard was a sports teacher and Jackie taught art?

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  Před 6 měsíci

      Close! We both qualified as PE secondary teachers then Richard went onto maths and was a deputy head in charge of behaviour. I was Primary so taught everything 😊 (lots of sticking and colouring in🤣) thanks for watching our vlogs x

    Do you have a Pop-up Roof and do you ever sleep in it? Thiesing to you us your Water Tank Inside the California Audio do you work with Water Bottles only?

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  Před 6 měsíci +1

      We do have a pop top roof that we use for storage when we are travelling (once we have set up for the night) we have only slept up there a couple of times as we found it too hot! But we do love the extra head height. Our van has a water tank underneath so we don’t use it much in the winter as it would freeze. We just use 2 gallon bottles

  • @dieselbushcraft1299

    Do you get any condensation in the tailgate of your T6. When camping we have had condensation gathering in the tailgate of our T6. I noticed it when I opened the tailgate and started getting dripped on from one of the bottom corner plastic studs that holds the inner trim panel. I have looked at it several times and ended up removing some of the insulation and leaving the two bottom corner plastic studs out and treating the inside of the tailgate cavity with wax.
    It is definitely not a leak as we hadn’t had any rain on several days when this was happening. I suspect it is condensation that forms on the rear window and runs to the bottom of the window and runs between the two skins of the tailgate. We purposely haven’t cooked in the van and left the two front windows slightly open but still happens. Just interested to know if someone else has found this same problem. Thanks

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the comment. Strangely enough, we have found over the last few months a similar dripping from our tailgate that we have not got to the bottom of. In true Richard and Jackie style, we keep putting further investigation off!
      We have read on the VW forums that there can be an issue with the seals on the central break light failing, and ours look a little bit worse for wear TBH. You may realise from our videos that I have very limited DIY skills, but it is definitely something we need to get onto in the next few weeks. I like your tip of removing the studs and waxing...it may be a remedial solution to a problem we never really get to the bottom of...such is life with a VW!
      Thanks again. R

    • @dieselbushcraft1299
      @dieselbushcraft1299 Před 5 měsíci

      @@earlyretirementwanderlust There’s also some thin rubber bungs along the bottom edge of the tailgate that people on the forums have advised to remove along with the high level brake light too but I’m pretty sure it’s condensation from the window as it hadn’t been raining when we first noticed it.
      I guess I’m quite lucky being able to do jobs myself. I had wanted a camper since being a child and after a skirmish with the big C we decided not to wait until retirement and get a van which we did and converted it ourselves which has been a kind of post illness therapy project. It’s definitely a camper now but it’ll never be finished, just keep evolving.
      I love the dales, used to walk up there often Pen-Y-Ghent but not been able to for a long time but hopefully get back up there again.
