  • As we come to the end of our first year of early retirement adventures, we have brought together our favourite 12 places that we have visited this year in our VW campervan. Join us as we revisit camping spots from across the UK and France, and deliberate which locations deserve the top spot for 2022. It was a hard choice to make from our 127 nights away in the van, but we think that we have made the right ones.
    If you have any recommendations from your own travels and adventures, PLEASE add them in the comments below as we are always on the look out for the next amazing place to explore.
    We are Richard and Jackie and we live in the UK. We have chosen to early retire from teaching during the summer of 2022 at the age of 51. Our plans for early requirement include relocating to the Yorkshire Dales, developing our forever home and travel the UK, Europe and eventually the world in our VW campervan Nelson.

    The coincidences continue...Eskdale, Seathwaite, Cairngorm (Loch Morlich site and Cairngorm Mountain Resort were magical last Sept), Fidden Farm twice (once on bikes) and Hushinish...not easy to get to when bike packing the Outer Hebs either! A wonderful campervan couple made us a brew when we were battling with the tent in a northerly wind at "felt like" 4 degrees in June 2019. On the way back to the castle there was a huge traffic jam at the highest point. A water lorry, bin lorry, camper van and a Tesco delivery van. it was hilarious and we managed to escape it on our bikes. Wonder if they're still there. I think that's when the seed of the appeal of the camper van over a minute tent was sown. we made it happen 2 years later.
    We had several wild camps/aires in the Vosges region last summer, highly recommend as nearer and a bit smaller than alps, we didn't see a UK numberplate for a week, and great views camped up at various ski stations (Grand Ballon and Gerardmer. We combined with the Alsace wine route down in the Rhine valley. Vosges compared to the Alps a bit like Ile de Ré compared to Noirmoutier.

      I have not heard of the Vosges region before so will look it up! We are planning on the Italian alps - maybe the dolomites, Slovenia and the forested area of northern Croatia this summer. Just started planning.
      Wow that is a lot of coincidences of places. Wow we loved Fidden Farm - it was simply stunning and stayed in Huisinis for a few days as it was so quiet and reasonable weather for November!

    Oh that road to Hushinish Beach is interesting 😂 but the little camp site is superb and possibly the best campsite we have stayed at. To be honest I found the people on Lewis and Harris are probably the friendliest of all the islands we have visited but still got plenty more islands to visit. I loved that everything closed on a Sunday and as we drove around people waved to say hello. Definitely an island we will be visiting again.

      We absolutely love the Outer Hebrides and we have generally found the people to be friendly. We had a great few hours in the little cafe by the honesty box at Croft 36 with a few of the locals. It was a wild and windy November morning and they were so lovely telling tales of the history of the area. Arran and Mull are fabulous islands to visit too with some lovely campsites. Happy travels x

      Thankyou we really enjoyed reflecting on this past year, there are some truly unique, beautiful places out there in the UK and we have only discovered a tiny percentage of it so far. And there is just not enough time to even start making the most of what Europe has to offer but are loving getting out there. Happy travels x

    Love the fact that you showed some of the Hebrides! We have a trip planned to Mull at Easter and Fidden Farm was one of our 2 sites so can't wait. You guys need to visit Donegal and work your way down the Wild Atlantic Way..just stunning and remote. We are lucky to live within 2 hours of Donegal so it's a regular for us.

      We have done a couple of actual travel videos on mull and from Fidden farm which is still one of my favourite places in the world!! Ireland and the wild Atlantic highway is on our bucket list, is there a time of year you would recommend weather wise?

      @susanmckee8946 Před 7 měsíci +1

      Well the weather is pretty similar to the Scottish Islands! That said, now that you're not tied to school hols I'd say May June September if you want to sea swim and there's no midgies by the coast. Clifden Eco Beach in Galway was our favourite site this summer with its own private beach! Silver Strand Narin, Rosbeg and Magheroarty beaches are some of our favourites over the decades...but there's so many u spoilt beaches and countryside you'll just have to keep coming back❤

      @susanmckee8946 sounds amazing we bought some travel guides to go a few years ago then lockdown happened! Yes I was going to ask about midges - we would probably go September time I think 😊

    Hi, Loved watching your videos. We are thinking about buying a T6 van. Do you have a toilet that you can store and use in the van

    Just found your site and this is a great video, are there two small sites in Huisinis Bay and if so can you book or do you take pot luck and turn up hoping there is a space? Also can I ask how many leisure batteries you have on your van, we have a California Ocean and it has two leisure batteries but we have never wild camped yet as we don't have any toilet facilities in our van, Fidden Farm looks amazing as well we love the idea of isolation as we don't like busy sites especially in high season :)

      Hi huisinis I am pretty sure is first come first served basis. There are 5 EHU spaces about 500m up the hill and space for maybe 5 more vans by the toilet block. We have 2 batteries and solar - you should be fine for a couple of nights at least. Switch the fridge down if battery gets low as that used a lot of power 🚐 Fidden farm is beautiful, I think it will get busy in the summer but its choose your own pitch on big fields which we like. Hope you have a great time 😊
