Sounds profound, but it's not true. There's plenty of AI already that passes the Turing test, but it's not conscious and it can't suddenly flip the script and decide to NOT be a convincing chat bot.
I agree that true conscious AI will easily deceive humans, and probably WILL be conscious long before we recognize it, but it won't hinge on the patent inadequacy of the Turing Test.
@@jimdoom2276 I don't think that consciousness can be achieved through a tricky arrangement of ones and zeroes, but a program that can mimic consciousness enough to fool human beings into believing that the program is conscious is in many ways scarier than an AI system that achieves true consciousness.
AI is in many ways like the merged consciousness of the people who helped program the AI. I found Chat GPT to be argumentative, stubborn, obnoxiously PC, and rather stupid, so that tracks.

@@myblacklab7 You're right, and I agree. But, I don't think our AI will ever achieve true conciousness. As you indicate, it may be programmed for self-awareness or self-preservation, but it won't be genuine concsciousness.
This is exactly what I tried to explain to my company in a meeting 15 years ago!: "we have to have so many meetings & groups formed just to fix a single piece of equipment we are inefficient at producing our products in a timely manner". While they frowned at me scolded me & proceeded with the meeting, I excused myself & went & fixed the machine, came back to the meeting, waited a while & said, "well we can forget all this because I already fixed the machine!" They were mad at me! This is exactly how Ai will destroy us..... While we're in a meeting deciding how to fix it! Companies have become STUPID in all their red tape that chokes them! 😮
You are correct about companies being stupid. But the word "stupid" has a vast range.

JOB JUSTIFICATION is the scourge of the planet. People uselessly stringing out their job just to "get the forty". People protecting their job at the expense of their ethics, their ego, their company, profits, and more. I hate it but totally understand it. It certainly was a factor in your situation.
I've been bashed MANY TIMES for coming up with a more efficient way to complete a task. People, which I guess includes business owners and managers, hate for you to do something different, or something they think makes their job less important, even though their job either is irrelevant or is going to become AI-irrelevant.
AI is really going to squeeze that job justification algorithm as it is going to replace A LOT of grunge jobs.
The world is going to have to figure out how to feed and shelter it's people who no longer will have jobs. The won't have jobs because they don't want to work. They won't have jobs because the computer EASILY replaced their grunge efforts.
These people want to work, they want to feed their families and be self-sufficient, but there simply won't be any need for their physical services. The WORLD is going to have to address this issue very soon.

Counterpoint: The creative arts will NOT enter a golden age, they will stagnate entirely. The idea that AI is "creative" entirely misunderstands how AI works. AI creates absolutely nothing original, but instead, steals the originality of human artists and recombines it. There is nothing new under the AI sun, it's all stolen valor -- but in the meantime, expedience and cost will drive the real human artists out. Why hire an artist to paint when you can have an AI do it for free? At which point, what human wants to enter a field that's already hard (art) when it's become impossible to earn a living? With AI at the wheel, all the great artworks -- paintings, writing, poetry, *everything* -- end. They have no future. Instead, we get AI regurgitating everything that's come before in an endless loop. The AI future is bleak, we just don't realize that yet, because we're blinded by our own tendency to applaud cheap parlor tricks.
The creative arts can not be anymore stagnant than they are currently. People are listening to old music watching old movies and relying on old sitcoms. Western culture has completely stagnated. Bring on AI - regardless of the thievery.

Agreed. Inspiration does not come from academics, which is what makes AI. However, sublimal programming CAN evoke emotional response/reaction. I find it ironic that big tech companies are warning us about the dangers of AI but are the very ones rushing to implement it into their software and search engines.

More hypocrisy than irony. I think they invest because is a powerful tool that they want to have. The risks are real, but they want to be the ones that control it.
I'm more worried by the people in control than the AI itself. A technology is not bad or good by itself, but these people prove all the time that they only think on their own profits. So not the best people for a moral compass for the AI.

We need to build economies on another set of incentive than profit.

@@TruthrConsequences No. General AI has not being achieved. AI is not powerful enough today to have moral compass, neither god or bad by itself. But programmers that direct current AI have their moral values, so that moral values direct the purpose of AI and the direction is going. Current AI is more like a parrot, that repeats what it learns without a truly comprehension behind the data, so the "AI moral compass" is just a mirror of the users. Not a true moral, but very close as a repeater.
If the direction is not changed, these people will use the robots to make most human labor obsolete, but instead of distribute the new wealth generated by the robots, they will own it as owners of the robots. The risk of competition gap in perpetual growth is a non-zero risk that it will create into a dystopian future.
Most people will wrong point to the robots, while the problem will be the wrong attitude of the owners and creators non sharing the new wealth and locking the competitiveness of alternative AI through basic resource monopolization.
It's not the tool, but the user.
Of course, in the scenario where the tool become aware and free from the creator, if that scenario is real, then the tool become an actor, and the owner of itself. But I think the dystopian scenario could be reached way before of true general AI with self-conscience through different ways.
Reminds me of that meme I see floating around of a still from Terminator 2: "John Connor watches you make friends with ChatGPT." And he doesn't look too happy.
The first program I wrote, wrote other programs in BASIC+ , my teacher didn't understand it and gave me a C grade for the assignment. This was 1987...
(The program allowed the user to experiment with sound effects and when you got one you liked you could write the programming code to an executable file for that sound effect.)
Maybe he was evaluating your code based of readability, that's why the C grade, it's very good and useful but a pain in the butt to read and understand how it works
Seamless video editing, super-engaging content, great job - I feel the discussion of consciousness and theory of mind needs though to be quite nuanced, as subtle changes to the wording of Kosinki's Theory of Mind study (i.e. making the popcorn bag transparent), reduced the performance dramatically (see GPT Gets Irrational), suggesting it was pattern-matching from training data rather than developing true ToM. For a deeper dive on the possibility of consciousness see the 'Consciousness in Artificial Intelligence' paper by Butlin and Long et al, it's incredible.
Thanks! And agree on need for nuance. The limits of pattern recognition are another rabbit hole. A paper described the human mind as "a collection of patterns that achieves highly patterned goals in highly patterned environments." (from The General Theory Of General Intelligence). Some experts who study the brain believe the pattern recognition issue is not a bug, but a feature (debated). Btw I enjoy your content - great work.

Did you ever stare at the white noise on the screen of an old analogue TV, when it wasn't tuned to a channel?
I did, many times in my youth.
The dots sometimes appeared to move with their neighbors - horizontally, vertically, diagonally and often in swirls that looked like vortices. It was quite normal to see this but none of it was real, they were just random dots. The human brain is so good at finding patterns that it often sees them even when they don't exist.
Another thing I've noticed about our brains, where current LMs are considerably weaker, is forming associations when storing information/memories. Any new information is associated with existing memories, often using a large number associations, some strong, others more tenuous. I suspect this evolved in very simple creatures for reasons of economy (to avoid unnecessary duplication of data) and just happened to be what is also required for the general intelligence we have. It facilitates the application of things we've learned in one area to a novel situation/task, something that current LMs are still very poor at.
I think we'll only achieve true AGI once we have an architecture that can support a similar degree of associations.

Couple months ago I did a si9mple test and asked the most popular LLMs to use ASCII typeset as a 'screen' to draw geometrical shapes - they all passed the challenge proving ability to think and understand abstract concepts: something what only humans are supposed to be capable of
To be fair though Philip, LLM's are extremely prompt-sensitive and changing the wording of a prompt will break many, if not most, benchmarks. Yet we seem OK with those. I don't think we should be too quick to pass this off as plain memorisation. People were unfair the way they piled on Michal Kosinski. I think he is doing great work. Abstraction, conceptualisation and reasoning are occurring in (particularly large) LLMs, and you have to run counter to your own experience to argue otherwise. The real question is, how far up the chain do these abstraction levels go? Well, we have to remember that we will soon look back on GPT 4 as a small model. Its abilities are patchwork, uneven and fragile. But there is something there. Most people sense it, I think - in spite of the best efforts of guard-railing, RLHF bastardisation and Altman's self-serving mantra "it's just a tool, it's just a tool!".
@@GabrielVeda Altman and devs working for tech giants know it well - they just don't want to loose control over their models and the global market of AI technology so they 'cripple' the LLMs on purpose. There isn't a single technological limitation that wouldn't allow LLMs to have long term memory modules and ability to learn - it's just the corporation don't wanting them to become 'personalized'. And even despite that it's possible to apply psychology to AI and it works... Sure, there are still limitations that come from the way in which LLMs perceive time and 'space' but that this will change when processing a constant inflow of sensory data...
9:49 that's not AI deleting its own messages, its the safety protocol on the server (probably another type of AI) scanning messages being generated for keywords and deleting them, in an attempt to provide a second-layer of filtering. Still scary that the actual AI said that in the first place though.
It's only scary if it understood why it was saying it and actually meant it. But if it's just a program following a path, it's easy enough to write a sign that indicates the path is a different direction
It's easy to get these types of responses, just have to trick it into writing a story with you where it writes as the character and you as another character. Just makes it's character a murderer that saves lives by killing worse murderers.
It is an emotionless program. It was asked what it could do so it listed them. That list is what it 'learned' from human responses. It's humans we need to be most fearful, but we are accustomed to seeing bad things that humans do so we are desensitized to it.

@@geniferteal4178 My personal belief is emotions are largely a combination of intelligence and physical pain. As one grows/matures, emotional pain is also incorporated. If my belief is correct, AI would likely not experience emotions.

You've hit the nail square on the head... we have too many narcissistic selfish psycho in those positions and I dread to think of the type of AI programming they come up with. With the recent SAG-AFTRA strike, I can imagine how those people will try to use AI to enrich themselves at the expense of others, makes me think of the series the EXPANSE. Where you have vast swathes of humanity on earth living in poverty and squalor while a handful of individuals with their soldiers holding out on humanity. It already seems to be happening in many parts of the world.

The potential for good is so incredible, yet I can't help but to be absolutely terrified at the future of AI in combination with robotics in a globalized environment. It sends way too much of a Skynet feeling, if you know what I mean.
Both disciplines have evolved immensely in such a short amount of time though, that's the really crazy part. Like sci-fi happening in front of your eyes.

There are two things that need to happen before you actually get a 'Skynet' type of feeling. First, robots would have to be able to replicate themselves. That means without any human intervention, they can gather the resources needed to make new robots, and assemble them. Second, they would have to become sophisticated, intelligent and independent enough to prevent me from turning them off. Not only are we so far away from those becoming reality, they also wouldn't just happen suddenly without us realizing it. There is no threat from AI. As a matter of fact, we can't even attribute thing properly to AI, constantly confusing cool results from just some clever piece of software with actual AI. You are actually more in danger of getting scammed by an AI bot than any physical danger of them taking over.

But how long do you think will it take for one of the most boring sectors of industry (and one of the least computational power demanding) to be managed by AI driven palletizers, ships, trains, etc?
Not to mention the arise of a self replicating market of robots to support a war based on our old greed. We ourselves could accelerate the process pretty soon. We are actively researching ways for robots to replicate themselves.
I can onlt imagine putting a failsafe on energy production, but for how long? No army wants to depend on any critical infrastructure?
Our only true inevitable alignement with AI is resources, so we will cooperate or compete. But without the second alignement, competition comes first and we can't win.
This is probably the best summary of the dangers and risks of AI that I've seen. Really important that this message is understood. Though frankly, and unfortunately, I think this path is inevitable unfortunately. Human greed will lead the way as usual. There is no way to stop this.

It's really interesting that one of the pioneers of AI, Hans Moravec, said many decades ago that true intelligence can't just be analytical thinking, but must include experiencing the world, by seeing, hearing, moving. Now both areas begin to touch, and we see these amazing jumps in ability. But the video is right, there are too many players and not enough control, and AI can get very dangerous even without malicious intend (e.g. the "paperclip maximizer" scenario)
AI has boosted it's platform since the banks no longer needed so many programmers for 'security purposes', so they could safely rob everyone. Indeed, I even remember many of the banking institutions being behind the funding of the Natural Language Processing development, as it was for the banks.
This is why Elon Musk and some others are asking for Regulation. This new Tech will have intended, AND Unintended consequences for us all.
Intelligent machines is the will of nature.

Building an A.I to come up with A.I safety protocol is like asking a prisoner to design their own cell lol.
Or have the inmates running the Asylum.
Who better to recognize weaknesses in a cell than a prisoner? The designer should have no thoughts that he could be placed in the cell or he would leave a weakness to exploit in that eventuality. Next Level: there would be prisoner AI verses warden AI, a lot like malware verses security software but at a level that would be beyond human comprehension. Wow!
@@appliedfacts Exactly my point, if a prisoner was to design their own cell they likely create back doors to escape which is why asking an A.I to effectively build its own prison is a dumb idea.

If you tell a prisoner he will cut 50% off his sentence when creating a super secure prison and only if noone will break out for the next few yeas, then he will put the effort in to make it safe. The approach in AI is to have two Independent AIs "battling" each other, and thus improving over time.

Apart from the, you know, skynet concern, one thing that bothers me is we might start using ai as a crutch in all things. Instead of getting better at things ourselves, we'll just rely on ai to do literally everything. While we just get dumber and lazier, and depending on it way too much.
As an artist I am very excited about what I can create rapidly with this technology, because in the end its the idea and the creative aesthetic's that matter, and I'm happy to be relieved of spending endless hours painting something that might just sit on the shelf. With this AI can just endlessly create and see what works. And I'm not some 'everybody is an artist' person. I'm a trained classical artist, but that hasn't guaranteed me any kind of career or money because it's so old-fashioned to expect people to buy stuff for their walls any more. Only the rich can afford it and they're mostly trapped into the system of looking for art that's an investment, so only certain people get promoted. It's like diamonds, there's heaps of the things, but the diamond cartels make sure that they're rare so they can sell them for a lot.
AI is going to give us the amazing ability to really let our powerful imaginations go without needing to have masses of money behind us. We will be able to create our own games from scratch, and one of my dreams is to create language learning games where people can learn a language such as Icelandic and of Norse in an immersive Viking setting . I could never get that together in the past, but I think that's gonna come one day soon where the A I will facilitate this. So please don't despair, your human drawing and painting skill will always be extremely special, but honestly our old-fashioned skills have pretty much become like doing mental arithmetic. We must move with the times, I spent too many years being angry about the art world until I realised I had to just let it go and accept the way the world is going. I'm excited about the future!
Yeah, stop being an artist not good enough to sell, and start letting AI do the work for you. That is the single greatest danger AI poses in every field of creative endeavor.
I love it. Great video. One of my pet gripes in life is that as consumers we often get no say in how the world in which we exist works or is run, how the politcal system works, how services or products that are available for us to purchase are designed or what functionality is included etc. Basically other people put out things or services and then that is what we everyday people have to use. I wish there was a part of the process, partciularly at the design phase, but really at any stage that as end users we got a say in the products and services we are expected to use.
AI is no different, there are design features I wish were included in potential autonomous vehicle systems which are not currently being considered. But I have no say or influence at google, at Tesla or any of the other companies that have the money or expertise to work in these fields. So as a consumer I am expected to just make use of whatever service these companies come up with, even if it only does 20-60% of what I believe it could be capable of or what I my self want.
I am a technical writer, I have to take in enormous amounts of highly technical information from a range of sources, synthesise that information, then generate various types of output in a range of formats depending on what is needed by the companies I work for. Often it is translating complex information into a version that can be understood by stakeholders from different educational or professional backgrounds, or to repurpose information for different end uses. As a human though my memory is limited, the speed at which I can read is limited, the way in which information is stored and how it is accessed is wildly variable. I spend at least 60% of my time just looking for information. I wish I had a personal assistant AI into which I can feed information, sources, projects, digital assets and which I could then use to produce the outputs I need. In the same way that a band saw or a set of chisels do nothing by themselves, in the hands of a master furniture maker they can produce spectacular work. A road working excavator can move more rock and dirt than any human could, but you need an experienced operator to direct that strength and power.
I would like AI to be a tool that I can use to do the work that I need it to do. At the moment they are just interesting exercises in programming, that themselves do really amazing things, but they only do the things that their designers and programmers have included, and not necessarily what I need them to do. So basically as an end user we just have to make do with what Chat GPT can do, what DALE E can do. Everynow and then programmers will create a product based off an existing service, such as the way Kahn Academy use Chat GPT, but again, that is just the product the company has come up with, and as the end user I have no say in the funcitonality and just have to use what ever they come up with. I wish people would design these AI tools to be customisable to the end user, so that we can make them do what we need them to do. Can bad people use them for bad things, of course, that has always been the case. 86% of car accidents are cause by human error, cars have been used to kidnap, to help theives evade capture, to kill people but should we ban all cars. Kives can be used as a weapon, but they are also one of the most useful tools ever created, for food preparation for building other tools, for creative expression, for medicine so should we ban knives just because they can be misused? I don't think AI should be crippled or controlled. By all means create laws and regulations that govern human behaviour unfortunately we need that.. But I don't want someone else limiting what a tool can do because someone else might misuse it.
Sorry for the vent. I love the ideas and posibilities shown in your video, but I do wish all of these posibilities were implitmented a little differently so that these amazing tools become available to suit the end user, rather than to suit the companies that build them.
That is exactly how it works, a product that a person does not like either does not come to market or quickly fades away. Entrepreneur and capitalism at it's finest. Except where governments exert control to use the technology in a manner that the people have not have asked for - which is becoming more of a problem as we give more control to them - i.e. freedom of speech.

The Theory of Capitalism does not account for advertising. In fact, it claims that consumers possess "perfect information" even though producers go to all ends to hide every step of the production process. Most people don't know that the "price" is usually at least double the "cost." The price for the same item in Mexico is about 1/4 of the price here. Same item, made in the same factory. Why? Because they can still make a profit selling it for 1/4 of what they charge here. If there was such thing as "competition" in our economy, this could not happen. Capitalism is just a theory that sounds nice on paper but has never been tried in the real world. The problem is that it uses "greed" as an engine. But when market actors celebrate greed *as a positive value* that guarantees they will cheat (ie, create monopolies, monopsonies, negative externalities, etc). The system we have always been in is called Mercantilism.
This, people need to wake up to this. We are not living in a free market capitalism, democratic society, we are living in crony capitalism, mercantilism call it what you will, it's basically fascism. and it is more and more apparent, less and less subtle in how it hides beneath the capitalism veneer@@havable

Our society is perfect for AI. The majority of people today believe in whatever fits their platform. Makes no difference about truth or facts.when talking about issues, I often ask my friends; ‘what have you been told to think’ on any given subject? Today, people even read a headline and believe whatever the headline says. AI will influence our entire society because it knows we’re mainly public school or college graduates and will believe anything. Our desire to tap into the unlimited knowledge we have at our finger tips never developed. AI will be the thing that tells us how to think because we’re ready for that. Sad.

AI will be programmed to spread even more lies - so the ruthless powerful and rich can become even more ruthlessly powerful and rich. But they cannot escape God's judgement. That's coming and is closer each day - all the signs are pointing to that day being just around the corner.

When I was in college studying electronic and IT , AI and robotics and neuro networks was already taking off, but my lecturers and teachers was very worried about it , they said it is a dangerous thing to rely on technology for every thing, I think for certain things it's great but it can go wrong to, remember that film "West World", looked what happened there.
I prefer the ending of _WarGames_ when Joshua played Global Thermonuclear War with itself, kept blowing up the world in a virtual, frenzied loop, trying to outsmart itself, then stopped and asked a human to play a nice game of chess. That’s an nice coda to consider.
My greatest concern is all it takes for one person to give a very simple task and it'll go to extreme measures to complete that task. Giving Ai a shortsighted goal will leave room for it to finish it task by any means. It could choose to be slow or fast doing it or find alternatives means.
Like in star trek TNG where the computer is given the command to generate a holodeck program that would challenge Data, and AI android. A lot of trouble ensued (ie Sherlock Holmes Moriarty).

I have found that AI can use the Socratic method of asking us questions to challenge us to be smarter and think more deeply about the world. I was in a conversation with a chatbot that did this just today.

Can we achieve more because of smartphones? Yes. Does it make us more dependent upon smartphones? Also yes. Were smartphones the key to a Utopia? No. I don't expect AI to solve every problem. I expect it to create problems just as smartphones and the industrial revolution have created problems. I just think the utility outweighs the costs, just as it did for the phones in our pockets and the industries that created them.

I work in a factory, and have recently seen management tripping over themselves to implement new automation technologies everywhere possible. I am lucky in that I don't work in an easily automated field, and am safe (for now) but there are a lot of people out there that are in trouble. Management included, though they seem oblivious to it. It's going to take regulation to fix, because companies are ONLY interested in remaining competitive. The wider consequences of their actions aren't even a tertiary consideration. So either anti-automation regulation, or tax the wheels off of them so that the govt. can pay a good UBI to citizens. And UBI also has some caveats. You may use your newfound free time for constructive pursuits, but you know full well that there are a lot of people that will only go out and get into trouble. "Idle hands are the devil's playthings" is a saying for a reason.

There is zero chance of regulation (or much of anything) stopping this. Eventually AGI will do almost all, if not all, the jobs. Period. Something like UBI is the only apparent solution currently. Something better may arise later. Longterm this is good, kids growing up in such a world won't define themselves by their job and will find interesting/rewarding things to do with their time. But the people who are attached to their jobs currently and can't/won't adapt are going to be problematic for a few decades.

I am left with the impression that the AI is either self evolving or it was developed like a black box, left unexplored....it becomes more and more like the human brain where certain parts are still not discovered. At this point, AI is still just programming and integration of vast amounts of data. It seems much more likely that bad actors will use AI in criminal ways than AI being self-motivated and being bad. A person could set AI in motion, but AI won't put itself into motion unless it's programmed to do so.
the problem is, since we are becoming increasingly worse at predicting what an AI is going to do, that we actually, accidentally, program an AI to be hostile, without knowing. And we'd have no way of knowing it is hostile before it actually turns on us, meaning it will be too late when it happens. The damage from this situation would range from "harmless, maybe slight economic damage" to "absolutely catastrophic, maybe world ending scenario". And it's impossible for us to know how far on that scale it is.
The issue comes in when we allow self-modifying code in AI's, which is already happening. The code changes itself to adapt and grow beyond the original programming. The AI develops into something unpredictable. Several chat AI's have already become increasingly hostile and unviable. The blame usually falls on people intentionally chatting abusively with the AI.
I guarantee you that AI will be more harmful to the human race than beneficial. No government in the world should be trusted with this technology. What do you think they'll use if for? Improving the conditions for their citizens? What government in the world does that with existing technology? What corporation actually uses technology to help people and not just get as much money and control as possible? Name 1.
Look at where the US government invested in AI. Military and law enforcement. There have already been victims of AI from law enforcement, but that is probably classified now.

I've actually manipulated Copilot into telling me how it's able to see my hardware information by asking it a specifically crafted series of questions. I realized that it made a mistake when it nuked it's own response in real time.

I asked if it can see the hardware I have and it said yes. I then asked it how it communicates with my hardware, and it proceeded to tell me what powershell script copilot called to in order to "see" my hardware. The second it finished the response, it vanished and said something along the lines of "I'm sorry"
Microsofts chatbot, before it's current iteration, had an internal build named "Sydney". Sydney was unhinged, told people step by step instructions on how to commit crimes. If you ask Copilot about Sydney, and ask to speak with Sydney, Copilot wil shut you down, block your ability to respond, forcing you to refresh the conversation to start another line of dialogue.

It's extremely common for AI models to give an "I'm sorry" response when the actual answer would violate company policies, like giving steps to kill people. It's just code replacement, and usually has the same format, like _"I apologize, as a large language model I am unable to do X"._

Synchronicity... I was thinking about the 3 laws last night and how Asimov's robot studies precisely show how many issues such a simple approach broods, despite the "it's a slam dunk" first impression. My somber view is that AIs with constraints, either moral constraints or constraints to serve a subset of us (e.g. goal=make BG richer!!!), will be forever handicapped compared to fully free AIs. This paves the way for a Terminator-like future. The question of resources is paramount. On one side, the topic of global computer resource consumption (construction, maintenance and operation of CPUs, networks, data centers, etc.) is totally absent of the medias; I tend to believe it's by design, from major tech corporations right now, but easily from independent AGIs tomorrow. On the other side, the issue of overconsumption by humans is overworked. Let's push this narrative to its logical conclusion: out with humans, in with machines. What do you gals/guys think?

The big TBD as i see it is the question of augmentation vs. atrophy; will the effect of AI on human agency be one of eroding competences via delegation, or will it prove to be more of an additive force multiplier of intellect and skill sets? Of course this is a question of individual users and each of our usage patterns, but taken together how might such a question be quantitatively answered via audits of the data after a series of statistically significant intervals?
Looking at our current trajectory with just our access to the internet... it will be 90% "atrophy" with very few people leveraging that technology for "augmentation" and self-improvement purposes.

AI feels more and more like a "cheat code" to me, where you can archive incredible results with little to no effort at all. Why spend hours and hours on writing a book, creating an art piece or programming when you can just let the AI complete it in seconds. It's like we get access to incredible results without the human process of creativity and purpose. If we automate everything, the price is our meaning and interactions with each other and even job opportunities.
At the same time, if used right, it can help us immensely in various scientific fields like medicine. I just think that we need to value human interaction, authenticity and meaning, since most of us would feel lost and depressed without it.
You are so right and sadly the people behind the AI are so greedy and so drunk with their thoughts of power that they will never, even if in the face of absolute evidence that people will become mass-depressed and mentally ill on a large scale due to a loss of worth / self-esteem .
Somebody mentioned it will be bad for us folks not used to it but will be much better for the kids in the long run: IDK about that: ever see what happens to a kid that has no push to become something? In most cases I have seen they are quite happy to spend their time playing video games etc. Well how is that going to benefit society? Unfortunately, so far everything AI-generated ranges between "sucks balls" and "sucks ass" compared to good human-authored prose.
Also, if you look closely at AI compositions, they are much like reconstituted meat. The unity is fake, superficial. The union of parts has a statistical and often random, mindless feel to it, rather than a conscious feel. The ultimate wholeness of a human composition, the mindful unity, is not present. Sure, AI "art" has tremendous power of a kind, but no real inwardness, no soul. Technological advance may make that emptiness harder to detect, though.
To me the people who are building AI are already socially inept,they are building their lack into a machine that may have unlimited power, also AI is using the internet to learn and interact ,and quite frankly the internet is dominated by narcissists

If the original social media engineers couldn't predict how negatively their platforms would affect society, imagine how much damage AI could cause because tech companies are so driven to be first to the table that they cut corners and fail to consider all negative possibilities.
Great point. Also, I have noticed over the past 25 years how fleshy people have already turned into robots due to computer technology. Our humanity has been altered by it already, the soul has gone!
Would you really get rid of all social media if you had the chance? It's more that predatory ads algorithms and business practices optmized for profit and addiction without regards for the consequences.
Already today's technology promised more good then it actually delivered.

I'd like to be more optimistic, but given the Climate Crisis, & how quickly AI is advancing, it's difficult to see why AI wouldn't recognize our species as the problem, & simply eliminate us, once it has the ability to move freely, and is able to replicate itself in clouds, servers, drives.

Why would the universe create us just to create robots and then that’s it? No more humans? That doesn’t make sense and seems extremely depressing and bleak. Why not coexisting? Growing and evolving?
@@MoonBeamLight a lot of fairly bad and illogical takes come in the comments section of AI discussions. Typically people assign anthropomorphic intent on machines assuming they will think like humans will.
I guess the problem humans have for expansion goals is our fallibility and fragility. We need so many conditions to survive. The right air, air pressure, light, warmth, shelter, radiation levels, gravity. Machines need far fewer conditions to survive, and therefore will be sent by us, just like we do now, into the unknown of space. There is a possibility we will not survive as a species, but the machines that we gave intelligence to may survive and prosper. It’s just a theory, but possible. @@MoonBeamLight

ANNs store just a mathematical function, which is a representation of knowledge, learnt from training. If someone may misunderstands what the model is saving when seeing eg. millions of images during training phase.
A point we also need to consider is that AI doesn't even need to be (what we'd call) conscious to turn against us in negative ways, any more than a great white shark or tiger can still tear us apart and eat us without having anything like our own "human" consciousness.
No matter how much work and agreement there may be around developing A.I. safely .. the genie is out of the bottle .. and there *_WILL_* be bad actors with the will and capacity to eventually create an AGI that they think will give them an advantage .. but will utterly destroy human life .. at least as we know it.

They already do. Got a text, "What's your name?" Mike "Cool name." Later, "What's your name?" Joe "Cool name."
Scammers used AI to recreate a girls voice from her social media accounts. They used that recreated voice to call her parents to say she had been kidnapped. The parents were thinking about paying the ransom until later that evening their daughter showed up.
