    Hack > Press. After building a fair squat over the last few years & have used the leg press but not the hack squat. I recently started using the hack squat ( 2.5 weeks) and can attest that it's considerably reduced the struggle coming out of the hole on my heaviest squats. So much that I've adjusted my goals for the year.

    I’ve been lifting for 20 years and hack squat is undoubtedly superior to leg press. What good is loading a ton of weight on leg press when you can’t feel the legs working? A component of building muscle involves placing yourself in mechanically disadvantaged positions that challenge the muscles to the greatest degree possible - this is the essence of hack squat. Most don’t do it because it can be hard on the knees, BUT if you stay consistent and work on form, range of motion, and most importantly repetition over time, your legs will adjust and then begin to THRIVE.
    Tom Platz concurs that hacks are superior and ranks it as one of the best leg exercises; Platz also felt leg press was more “showy” as opposed to effective and regarded it as more or less useless. Phil Heath is also a massive advocate of hacks.
    Hacks > leg press

    Idk why people hate on the leg press so much. Depending on your goals and situation it may be the best leg exercise available. You can change focus with foot positioning and you can incorporate a variety of beyond failure techniques that you could never ever accomplish doing squats. All that with a reduced risk of injury and less taxing on the central nervous system, thus keeping you on your routine and in the gym. And like they said, back in the 90's leg presses were the go-to leg exercise for many pros.

    • @iang8169
      @iang8169 Před 8 měsíci

      Its because if you do the same deep range of motion as a hack squat ( ie take the leg press so your knees touch your shirt ) then probably your butt comes off rhe pad and youll get lower back problems.
      I hack squat one day and leg press another and so far no lower back pain when taking my knees to my shirt

    • @NonprofitWrench

  • @rampage222555
    @rampage222555 Před 2 lety +4

    They both have their ups and downs. I don't particularly see one as better than the other. One can fuck up your back if your form sucks, the other can fuck up your knees if your form sucks. There is value in the increased range of motion of the hack squat, there's also value in the increased volume and weight of the leg press. I think some of the negativity towards the leg press in this video comes from bias towards wanting a leg exercise that carries over to the barbell squat. That's fine, but I personally think the leg press and hack squat complement each other much better than either with the squat, for bodybuilding purposes.

      Less weight, and you can also slow down the movement, definitely including the negative portion. Then it will be less weight and less reps (to start building up from) which I see as a good thing. More effective, less time consuming with reps and loading weight, less risk of injury, etc. Also easier to get into the mindset. If all your lifts are heavy as shit (because you're maybe utilising compromised form), then it can be harder to have the motivation to do it.

      Machine to get for your home gym? Are you kidding me, mate? Just back and front squat. This video is more for people who enrolled in a gym and have access to both a leg press and a hack squat and don't know what to do with them.

    Hack squat destroys your knees

    Leg press is bullshit, the reason you can load so much weight is because you're not even lifting, your pushing the weight, why even bother 1 legged leg press that's even more wanky "hell look bro I'm leg pressing 100kg with one leg" 🤣🤣There's something just wrong with doing one leg only of any exercise for a complete set besides wasting time

      @@JoseYuri Me too but you know what that's a great thing. As for this oh if you want good quads you must place your feet low BS. Sure if you drop your feet low and narrow you will get more quad activation but for me my knees just can't take travelling too far forward so I put them high, wide and ensure I kick them out, yeah I get a bit more glute work but ffs you will still be lighting up them quads if you maintain tension (don't lock out or rest at the top) glutes don't work knee flexion which is basically what a hack squat is regardless of knee stance. The leg press is way more comfortable for me which in my experience basically means less effective and my days of barbell squats as a 45 year old pretty beat up always natty man are over 😂

      Yeah I don't seem to be able to load any more on them than regular squats. At least they are safer so I can include them but I don't feel as much for my quads as a single leg press can do.

    The leg press is trash. Do Bulgarians, or Lunges, or hack squat, for BB back squat, hell a goblet squat ever better.

    Depends. For a taller person with long femurs I’d say hack Squat. Leg press for short legs.

    The fact that guys who can't squat 225 can do 5 plates on a leg press shows that its not worth using compared to a hack squat.
