  • Michael Jackson: Bad - Album Review (1987). Michael's 3rd album with Epic, but his first with real creative control. His personal flavor really shines through on this album, much more than previous albums in my opinion. Come hear what I thought of this album (and I rant a bit too).

Michael was probably one of the most savvy, innovative artist during this time. Always searching for new sounds, breaking new ground. It really made sense to reach out to Teddy Riley for Dangerous and Rodney Jerkins among others to write and produce Invincible. Those are some great albums. Seems Sony really dropped the ball on Invincible.

What can I say, it's MJ. Bad definitely turned everything around. What followed was the incredible Dangerous, HIStory and Invincible (& Blood on the dance floor if a remix album with 5 original trax counts) , all are spectacular.

Bad is a pure pop masterpiece. It is on par with Thriller in levels of masterful songwriting and superb production. Oh, and speaking of the production, it may be Michael's most ''Prince-ish'' record.

Bad is a revolutionary album! It's my 2nd favorite Michael Jackson album. I loved how he took the reins of creative freedom on this album with the songwriting and producing, and made a cohesive record that was beautiful, funky, inspiring with just the right amount of edge. Iconic and authenically Michael Jackson. It was better than Thriller sonically and creatively. It deserves its iconic status. My favorite songs are Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man in the Mirror, Dirty Diana, Another Part of Me, Liberian Girl, Smooth Criminal, and Leave Me Alone. So great. Can't wait for the Dangerous review!

Prince's Fan There's an extended version of The Way You Make Me Feel video, which makes it clear MJ in fact CRITICIZES males' harrassing and rude behaviour to women and the scope is to show how stressing it is to women when men push themselves on them. (That's why we always see MJ and the other men from where the woman is, to feel how she feels when followed around.) The woman decides to chose MJ only when he withdraws and lets HER decide. It's kind of sad that mv is misinterpreted.

    • @Vaisin
      @Vaisin Před 3 lety +5

Same goes with Dirty Diana, it looks like it's gloryfing groupies, but that song was meant as a criticism of objectifying women.

    • @leezydagod2507
      @leezydagod2507 Před 2 měsíci

@@Vaisin Dirty Diana was exposing people to the world of pop stars and the dangers groupies posed. It clearly shows that these although beautiful WOMEN can be very devious and dangerous. Not once did it objectify or hint at female objectification. Same as TWYMMF, he's showing how hard it is to to get the girl of your dreams to notice you. So he goes and shows how sometimes you have to go to the extreme to achieve this, and by not giving up he eventually gets her to see him hence the embrace and kiss at the end of the video.

My 2nd favourite MJ album my first being Dangerous but I absolutely love this album. One of the only albums where I wouldn’t skip any tracks cause all of the songs are so good! It steered away from the music MJ was known for making. The grooviness of Off the Wall and Thriller were gone and more aggressive and mysterious tone was brought in. It’s like it was someone completely different but still the same MJ voice everyone knew and loved, and it just showed how much more he matured as an artist. Spectacular album!

The story MJ read which inspired 'Bad' was of Edmund Perry, who was murdered by a plainclothes cop, after Perry and his brother 'allegedly' attempted to mug him. Different accounts had a different person, and not Perry and his brother, as the mugger. Nelson George (who was written books about MJ, as well as the liner notes for the Ultimate Collection) also wrote about the Perry case. Reportedly, Prince offered 'Wouldn’t You Love To Love Me' to MJ but it was rejected. You could DEFINITELY hear echoes of Prince all over the Dangerous album though, especially in the cuts that were not released on the album. Even with 'Bad' you hear some nods to Mr. Nelson. On the Bad tour, during the intermission they played 'It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night' as well. Greg Phillinganes is brilliant, and while he was also director for the Dangerous tour i wonder why he did not continue to be the musical director for the HIStory tour, or This Is It.. Was he even considered? Was he occupied with something else?
Thank you for making the connection between the song and short film of 'The Way You Make Me Feel'. i get a lot of grief for this (particularly amongst the MJ community); but i look at that short film as being some sort of gang rape fantasy video. Tatiana walks in a dark alley with a skintight short dress, and she is basically stalked by Michael, until she gives in. The dudes at the beginning even encourage him to stalk her, and insinuate that it's what she ultimately wants. The song even states that he would 'buy her things to keep him by her side'. Just the whole thing creeps me out. i think 'In The Closet' as a short film was much more tasteful, as it reflected more of a mating dance between two willing participants. Sonically, in terms of arrangement and vocals, the song is brilliant. In terms of subject matter the song creeps me out. i think (as at this point he was deemed 'non-sexual despite being associated with women), this was his way of 'proving' the opposite, but it just turned out to be a misogynistic, immature mess.
MJ is my favorite artist, but he is not immune from critique, or the trappings of his father's training.
'Moonwalker' is also a mess of a film, but 'Speed Demon' and 'Leave Me Alone' were the glue that held that thing together. Will Vinton and Jim Blashfield's direction were excellent. The only pressing i know in existence of 'Speed Demon' is Dutch; for some reason it got pulled, and copies of the promo 45 are expensive. 'Liberian Girl' was written originally in 1983 (there was the interview he did at Havenhurt around that time and mentioned composing the song. i met a woman from Liberia who used to see him and Latoya there all the time in the early 80s.) The woman in the song is Letta Mbulu, who has been recording music since the 60s. She is great for sure. Sadly, the short film for that song was a mess as well. What it looked like was that MJ wanted to make a video featuring a romance between himself and a Liberian woman (or a woman of African descent- continental or diaspora-based), but Epic said 'NOPE!!!' It was as if they were trying to whitewash him, maintaining some 'universal appeal.' 'Liberian Girl' was 'too Black' for Epic... So they made some video essentially trivializing the message of the whole song, with celebrity features. He came back swinging with Remember The Time' though!!!
i am not sure why the speaking intro from 'I Just can't Stop Loving You' were pulled from subsequent versions of Bad. i have the vinyl, so that is all i knew. When i got the 2001 special edition disc i was shocked it was not there.
'Another Part Of Me', to me, is MJ's greatest teaching- and to me, he is a teacher. It's one of his most spiritual/esoteric songs, on a deeper level. The song, to me, is about universal law: L.O.V.E.- the law of vibrational energy. 'Man In The Mirror' is one of his staple songs (Siedah Garrett is a brilliant songwriter, and with Glen Ballard wrote an excellent track), but the song is still about individual introspection to create outward change. 'Another Part Of Me' is about making connections to everything.
'Smooth Criminal' and 'Leave Me Alone' to me, are a couple of the reasons why MJ is considered a brilliant composer. The polyrhythms, the harmonic building, the production... Not enough people give him credit. Bad is miles ahead of Thriller as an album, in my view. i know he wanted to top Thriller in terms of sales, but i think it's better to create a more compelling album and sell less, than attempt to always create mediocre pop albums that sell a lot. Though it is my least favorite MJ album, was Thriller mediocre? Not at all. However, It took no real risks. i prefer MJ's later albums, because he took some massive creative risks he would have never taken had Quincy Jones still been co-producing albums.
Great video, Prince's Friend. Be well...

‪Great review, man! MJ spent two years making 𝘉𝘢𝘥 with one goal in mind: Outsell 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳. And therein lies the problem. If it was heard as 11 songs by a great artist, many would’ve seen it as a masterpiece. Looking back, though, it still raised the bar for pop entertainment.‬
‪𝘉𝘢𝘥 is the first and only album to have five consecutive #1 pop singles by a male artist. MJ wrote nine of the album’s 11 songs and co-produced the entire project. Iconic short films from this intensely creative period helped him earn the MTV Video Vanguard Award in 1988.‬
‪Comparisons with 𝘖𝘧𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘭 and 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳 are unimportant, except for this one: 𝘉𝘢𝘥 is a pure pop classic with more hits than most artists have in their “Best Of” collection.‬

This album is so special to me and my family. Thank you for the review. Watching my 2 year old dance every day to Speed Demon and Bad was joyful. He adored it. Then of course 1988 was the Bad tour and you knew every song and all the lyrics. It was on MJs 30th birthday and we all sang happy birthday to him as his band dragged him back on stage and he cried and cried so we did too. So much love and togetherness of all races that night it was magical. Back to the album though so so glad Prince did not duet with Michael on Bad it would have ruined the mystique between the two. And Bad was good enough on its own. Hearing Bad makes you automatically want to either bust a move grab your crotch or flick your leg up and out 😂 The ones that made me cry were Man in the Mirror Another Part of Me and Liberian Girl. Still do. Speed Demon is my favourite track. Might even have been Lynn drums on that beat but i just remember how awesome the beat was. Bad and SOTT were incomparable to no other albums that year even though there were many and was so happy not to have to choose between the two.

was seated whilst they listened to STREETWALKER, and got up and danced to APOM. "You're not helping my case" Q recalls MJ telling Dileo.

The whole álbum is iconic or almost but Smooth Criminal is one of it´s most iconic songs, maybe mainly because of the vídeo and then live performances? just the «I don´t know» is worth puttin on the álbum I guess kk it´s really a part of Michael that we didn´t know, that way of singin in this particular song, not the «I don´t know», most of the song I mean, it´s something really really new by Michael!

I remember when it came out..the first time hearing Bad the song. The sonics were off the charts..You keep saying that the other albums was missing something Off the Wall was an indelible production for the time ..Its because of Off the Wall, Thriller was so accepted. But I understand what you mean.. Michael had more of the vision on Bad.. But, the Bad LP was more constructed for Live WorkQuest Love calls it a stadium album.

Great (thought-provoking) review again, really enjoying your MJ reviews so far! I don't remember the Stevie track at all for some reason, that's odd - I must have skipped it, but it sounds more like a Motown/Jacksons song (and perhaps something that might have been on Thriller) so that can't be bad! Speed Demon was the very weak link for me (but I was 'just' a kid - I should have another listen).
Hope I've still got my vinyl somewhere as this album meant so much (I was there at Wembley for the 'Diana' gig with my sister and parents, amazing night, what a first gig ever!).
We (my friends and family) didn't have CD players at the time, and I didn't follow updated releases, but Leave Me Alone I think only came out in the UK when Moonwalker was released. I have the 7" vinyl as it was a single here which I went straight out and bought after seeing it in the cinema, so there IS vinyl of it!
Last two things and that's I had the maxi-cassette of Bad, and the Extended Mix (False Fade) reminds me now so much of Prince stuff that I've only now caught up on (like much of the syncopation of the whole of the 1999 album). The cross-influence seems so obvious.
Also (sorry to say it!) Prince must have been spitting feathers when Bad came out! MJ absolutely nailed it right here, and the whole world was at his feet. Prince could have done the same, but followed his spirit and the music. Sign is a better album than Bad imvho, but MJ took the limelight at the time.

I LOVE THE BAD ALBUM especially the second single especially the original vinyl version, the 25 remaster ruined it’s rhythm and takes out a few favorite parts of the song i love, but once i got my hands on the multitracks i took advantage of it in my last mix of this song.

Off The Wall was happy Michael excited to break free.
Thriller was about hits.. he wanted to put out an album with all the tracks as smash hits. his most serious album a revenge on the music industry.. thriller introduced us to angry Michael.. he came for blood
Bad was the most creative of all his albums. I think bad was when he attained perfection of his craft. He was at peak creativity.
    Dangerous was experimental
History was frustrated, angry and personal Michael

IMO, Stevie’s duet with MJ on his ‘Characters’ CD (also from ‘87) titled ‘Get It’ was much better. Kudos to the MJ Estate for releasing the ‘Bad 25’ super deluxe box set, which was almost perfect!

My second favorite album of him. I remember to listen the songs in 2008 in store when i listen the album and i like the general album, hugely more to ''Thriller''. I also listen last year ''Dangerous'' and the same effect of ''Bad'' arrived, a very good listen. Particulary ''Smooth Criminal'', my favorite song of him. This song included many masterpiece songs like ''The Way You Make Me Feel'', ''Smooth Criminal'' and ''Speed Demon''. Except ''Another part of me'', this album was a good pleasure to listen of the debut at the end.
My favorites: ''Smooth Criminal'', ''Liberian Girl'' (so sensual), ''The Way You Make Me Feel''
My least favorite: ''Another Part of Me'' (not so fan of this song)

Hey princess friend how's it going I got some facts for you about this entire album okay first off Michael only written 33 songs for this album there are some songs from Thriller That was supposed to be on here that didn't come until later and librarian girl was originally called pyramid girl and I can't stop loving you is a sequel to loving you but due to the fact that the tape didn't meet Michael standard because of the sound quality the song was taken off and so he needed a replacement and that's how loving I can't stop loving you came about and he also did a song with Diana Ross for this album but it never made a spot on the album and there is a thriller song on this album on the anniversary edition and it's called don't be messing around and fly away was given to his sister Rebbie Jackson

Don't you think its interesting how Prince & MJ both made a transition in 1986' Prince started out more synth heavy the whole linn drum machine thing Prince mastered, by 1986 Prince found Eric Leeds & started using horns then later live drums to a more organic sound with NPG' the roles reversed, MJ started out more organic with Off the wall's live drums & horns & then on Thriller which was 50/50' with synth horns etc.. then later MJ's music was all mechanical imo not complementing him at all in later years, it all just sounded the same' while Prince going all organic & jazz influenced funk really helped him make some of his best albums, where Prince was before using synth licks he replaced them with horns as can be heard in his live shows when he's doing songs pre 1985' its like they were both influenced by each other but only Prince benefited more imho

I disagree MJ actually his song writing got more in depth ...like in 1979 when he had OFf the wall album vibes you wouldve never though he wouldve dropped a earth song ...earth song is more of a deeper mental perspective than those earlier songs ...And I feel he doesn't get credit for that he actually got more in tune and deep with nature and his spiritual views as well keeping that black conscious as well ...and plus he had more layers to go but he was fighting the forces that be as well ....

but OF COURSE the real reason wasn't that line... when MJ approached Prince the song was just a scratch, it had only a working title "Pee". And MJ always wrote the lyrics after the melody was ready. Prince was just fooling around with that story. He obviously never wanted to tell what exactly happened between them. Neither did MJ.
