  • A reliable recall is a must for any dog owner. Ensuring that your dog responds to COME or HERE is needed for our control and for their safety, and this video shows a young dog with no formal training transform into an obedient dog that does just that: recalls reliably with the COME HERE command.

    Great explanations. I really like that you show actual training of a dog, and not what we usually see here: an already trained dog performing to make the trainer look good (and not actually teaching how to work things out)

      Thanks. I think that's the best way to really show how to train a dog, and doing it this way has occasionally caused the video quality to suffer. If I don't have the camera set with the best settings (e.g., EV or exposure amount) but happened to video a "light bulb" moment for the dog, I often can't repeat it and get the same a-ha moment on film.

    When teaching the recall with the e collar, are you using the nick or the stimulation? Second part do you hold the at 2 low until they come to you or do you release the stimulation once they start to come your direction.

      Watch it again. Whenever you see Low-2, Med-2, etc, displayed, that’s telling you exactly what level and exactly when I’m applying stimulation.

    It looks like you are using the ecollar as negative reinforcement as opposed to punishment which is how I think it often gets used. Are there specific reasons you do this? Thanks!

      Sorry for the late reply. Using the ecollar as a mild annoyance to ensure compliance of a command THAT THEY FULLY KNOW/UNDERSTAND is a powerful tool! How else can you be certain that the dog will obey you when they’re 50 yards (or a quarter mile!!!) away. As I noted, we need dogs to obey for both our control and for THEIR SAFETY.

    Question was it easier to train the English setter or the pointer! Im thinking if getting a setter.

      It will have more to do with the trainability of the individual parents than the breed, but setters are wonderful bird dogs and usually wonderful family dogs too. Just make sure that you're getting a pup from a litter in which BOTH parents are hunting dogs and/or field trial dogs.

    Are you training this before the "Whoa"
    command? And do you combine this with dummy retrieval?

    • @Payton1221
      @Payton1221  Před 9 měsíci

      I always teach recall before whoa. You need a solid recall in place if you're going to hunt your dog when unexpected and potentially unsafe situations occur and you need your dog to come to you to avoid those situations. As for using it with retrieving, you can TRY it. I have and I do, but you can't "force" a natural retrieve. If you throw a dummy for the dog to retrieve, if your dog picks up the object but drops it after you command "here" on its way back to you, the dog HAS COMPLIED with your command because it did come to you. But for those dogs who will keep the object in their mouth, that's a great way to introduce retrieving. Just make sure that you don't do it too often.

    Do you have pointers for sale

    • @Payton1221

      I don’t start or finish dogs purposefully to sell to others, but I occasionally will have a personal gundog for sale. I don’t have any for sale at the moment.

    What ecollar do you recommend?

    • @Payton1221
      @Payton1221  Před rokem +1

      I'm using a Tri-Tronics Pro 500 that was made before they were bought by Garmin, so I have no firsthand experience with today's manufacturers. Sorry I can't be of more help.
