In The Show, you don't have that many open days where you can work on it during the season, so they might spend 30 minutes one day in Spring Training. The average college team will work the practice after the game on it if they blow it so they may do it three or four times a year.

  • @grife3000
    @grife3000 Před 2 lety +7

    The reason the batter was awarded home was because of the Obstruction rule. "The obstructed runner shall be awarded
    at least one base beyond the base he had last legally touched before the obstruction."
    The other runner gets third because "Any preceding runners, forced to advance by the award of bases as the penalty for obstruction, shall advance without liability to be put out." So since the man on third was awarded one free base, The runner on second gets third base because of the one free base award.

    • @mptr1783
      @mptr1783 Před 2 lety

      actually, the preceding runner wasnt "forced" to advance and was not awarded 3rd base. The obstruction was called, but its a delayed dead ball, so the runner from 2nd made it to 3rd base(Soto didnt tag him in time), so once the play is over, time is called, runner that was obstructed by the catcher is awarded home, other runner made it to 3rd on his own and stays there

    • @grife3000
      @grife3000 Před 2 lety +1

      @@mptr1783 Actually reading it, I guess preceding runner would be one in front of the one obstructed. I was just going with poor understanding and it looked like the umpire was pointing at home AND at third. And on the next pitch in the breakdown there was a runner on third.

      @aschulang Před 2 lety

      @@mptr1783 agree with you... except you can see Angel H calling a dead ball before the play is over. The runner between 2nd and 3rd could have been put out and the the runner between 3rd and home should only get 3rd. If my understanding is right, they still botched it. Too many comments to read, so someone may have pointed this out already, but the other crucial rule of the pickle drill that the catcher broke is this: always get to the side of the baseline that is the arm side of the player with the ball. In my experience most people understand that a runner ought to be allowed to be safe somewhere when the runner is obstructed.
    In my experience, few people realize that the MINIMUM penalty for obstruction is the base / plate the runner was going toward BEFORE retreating back to the base where the runner was coming from.

    @scottydog1313 Před rokem

    I played baseball most of my youth, then competitive softball for many years as an adult, as well as playing and coaching in rec leagues. You ALWAYS go to the back after throwing and stay the hell out of the base path. I was trained as a base runner, to run right at the fielder in a run down. It makes it harder for the throw to reach him, and if he doesnt get out of the way, there's a chance for obstruction to be called. I coached my players to do the same.

    As much as you should always go to the back of the line, if you pretend for a second #26 doesn't exist, if #7 just threw the ball to the catcher when he was supposed to the interference wouldn't have happened. To me the biggest issue, among lots of smaller issues, is that #7 held onto the ball too long.

  • @fictionalgaming912
    @fictionalgaming912 Před 2 lety +1

    The problem with the call on the field is that fact the runner was sliding like 20 feet away from the bag and was sliding super wide before the catcher was even a factor. You could have argued that the runner was intentionally sliding into the catcher and was well outside the base line prior to obstruction being a factor of returning to the bag. I get why it was called, but there was enough evidence there to talk to the umpires about the runner's location in the baseline and location of slide. Not saying it was bad call or good call just saying there was evidence of something else in the sequence.

    the correct call is obstruction, not interference. obstruction is what a defensive player does; interference is what an offensive player does (or a coach or a fan). in this type of obstruction (where a play is being made on the player being obstructed, the ball is dead immediately and, by rule, the obstructed player gets the next base (in this case, home).
