The Spy in Your Phone | Al Jazeera World

  • In mid-2020, a mobile phone belonging to an Al Jazeera Arabic investigative team was hacked. Over the next few months, reporter Tamer Almisshal and the Canadian research group Citizen Lab investigated Pegasus, the sophisticated spyware used.
Pegasus is manufactured by an Israeli technology company called the NSO Group and is among the most advanced spyware in the world. It can access and infiltrate a smartphone without the owner clicking a link, opening an email or even answering their phone - meaning it can go undetected.
This investigation exposes how Pegasus works, how governments like Saudi Arabia and the UAE have bought the hugely expensive spyware and how it has been used beyond the stated intentions of the NSO Group of “developing technology to prevent and investigate terror and crime” - including to target journalists.

With or without an electronic device , each has its own vulnerabilities so you just have to decide what is best according to your own situation. I didn't own one for almost 10 years after I became a stay at home mom and would borrow my ex-husband's phone instead, but things got weird that even my citizenship card went missing. And with all the news about digital spying, nothing even comes close to my personal experience in the early 2000s. I don't really talk about it and when I did like with my ex when we were newly married in 2003, I've only said a bit of the details and have changed most of them.

Anything that is electronic and has wifi capabilities (you cannot turn off wifi, the camera , the microphone, and some other settings and have your cellphone still function to make simple phone calls) that we cannot protect with passwords or services like NordVPN, etc is easy access to the average person and companies / governments that want to listen in on your personal conversations and have access to exactly how, when, where we use these electronic devices. As a consumer your privacy is gone because they collect your information and the use of that electronic. You can be at risk from people who may want to scam or manipulate you for their own purposes. You have the option not to buy these products, but the systems we have set up to participate in society force you to purchase these products because they are the only electronics that are available. We are also expected to communicate with the majority of services by text, QR code, email, etc which requires you to own these devices. For example, you cannot file your taxes without being online, so you are forced to buy a computer or pay someone to file your taxes for you. Your personal information, your daily activities and conversations in your own home (any electronic device: cameras, surveillance (smart homes), appliances and everywhere you go (cell phones, cars, cameras, etc) document you! Anything that man creates can be hacked ie computer fire walls, etc. As well as malware. Malevolent attacks by malevolent people for malevolent purposes! Hacking has no purpose, but to use, take advantage of and harm the owner of the electronics. The only way to protect yourself is to not purchase or use these products. You will no longer have the conveniences of the use of these products and services, but you will still be under surveillance in your city by cameras at businesses, on highways by traffic monitoring cameras, some newer light standard poles that line our streets at night and are electronic because of their sun powered battery storage systems through the use of solar panels are equipped with wifi and drones if you try to live away from these other surveillance devices, especially “off grid”. Drones used by Media and protective services like the Police and Military for the coverage of events with software that can identify you by facial recognition and drones that can be repurposed to carry tear gas and other crowd dispersive deterrents. The messages are “your privacy and civil liberties do not matter” and there is “no where you can hide that we will not have a tool to find you”. Freedom is a state of mind.

I wonder if it would be legal to have a list of servers published so people could download it? Putting the list on the phone's firewall would probably not work, since Pegasus could simply kill that list as it's able to do anything on the phone. Perhaps the telecom companies, or maybe even users themselves, can configure blocklists on their devices to automatically deny access to those addresses. Maybe something like the DNS infrastructure for automating updates?

    • @angleisthebest

Consider this: they possess complete access to your phone, understanding precisely where data resides and how to extract it. Even application developers, especially those behind widely used apps, wield significant influence. And let's not forget the internet service providers (ISPs).This accurately portrays the complex nature of data privacy in the tech world; a multifaceted issue with various players each wielding a degree of influence.
