People like to have a lot of stuff because it gives them the feeling of living forever," says American social psychologist Sheldon Solomon. He thinks we have to come to terms with our own mortality before we can break the cycle.

The intro reminds me of "The Assassination of Jesse James" by director Andrew Dominik
Worked in a funeral home for a year and changed my perspective real quick on life and what really matters. I would pick up super rich people and really poor people and at the end of the day they both get transported in a body bag and end up in a cooler until arrangements are made. Everyone was treated the same. When it’s over it’s over so make the best out of the life you have right now.
That's the truth right there.
That's interesting when they both are stretched out on a morgue table you wont be able to tell the difference between the rich man and poor man. They are the same: DEAD!

So you might c9nsider yourself lucky for having worked in a funeral. Some people need to work the same job as you to change their lives for good.
Money is not everything. Even the rich have their problems. As one rich man once said "what do I need all the money of the world if I could not protect my son" (written on his grave tomb). His son died on a plane crash, than he shortly dies from loosing his son.

When my mum died (5 years after dad) I went to her home to clear things with my family. I could FEEL the emptiness. I realised that all the stuff was uselss without the person living with it!

That statement gives me chills (literally). Because it's such a cold hard hitting fact. It's awful
That's what happened to me when my supervisor passed suddenly due to unknown illness. No one else at my work wanted to touch her stuff. Housekeeping didn't know what was important and what was not important to throw out. Only I knew. So I cleaned up her office and sifted through her papers, notebooks and things. What she did in the program was forgettable, not very important. The things she had, 85% tossed out. The most important thing was her kindness and impact on people around her.
THE SITUATION WAS DIFFERENT WHEN YOU LOOSE 2 IN A FIRE BUT ALL THAT WAS LEFT WAS MATERIAL THINGS, THE WORST OF IT WAS CHRISTMAS EVE ABOUT 3a:m .

NOT 1 GIFT WAS DESTROYED OR HOUSEHOLD ITEMS. JUST THE STEPS. MY SISTER WAS A SOCIAL WORKER MOM WAS IN HOSPITAL AT THAT TIME. MATERIAL THINGS CAN NEVER TAKE THE PLACE OF A PERSON. SHE WAS BORN AGAIN MOM STILL LIVING 87 2022. STILL HAS THOSE MATERIAL THINGS BUT THE LIFE COULD NEVER B REPLACED.

It's not about having everything, It's just about having enough to make yourself happy and appreciate life.

I used to be greedy. I had so many Shoes, clothes, hats, upgrading phones all the time, taking selfies everyday and filtering them for likes and comments, and at one point I had two cars. But at the end I got ill. Very ill that I thought I was going to die, and when I recovered I realized there is more to life than being materialistic. Nowadays, I am fine having 3 pairs of shoes and one car that will take me from point a to point b, happiness for me today is being healthy and having time and good relationship with my family.

I like when he said, "We cherish values that are just not possible to attain." How indebted I am to my parents - who from my earliest infancy taught me the real meaning of life. They taught me to be prudent, modest, caring, self-sacrificing and to strive for goodness. They taught me to share with others. During COVID times I have been able to help an elderly black sick woman who lives in Cuba. I have never met her. But when I found out through friends that she was frail and sick, I made it my mission to help her. Have I met her? No! Will I ever? Mostly likely not. But how happy it makes me to be able to help her. My parents taught me to be charitable, to acquire knowledge, to consider others my equal, to be honest and truthful in all things. These are all values which are no longer cultivated by anyone. The world preaches GREED and a constant HOARDING of material goods. I live by simplicity. When I acquire one more thing, I get rid of something else. Minimalism is what I strive for.

@@BronzedDelight You are totally correct. We help people regardless and throughout my life I have. But CUBA is special. In Cuba there is extreme racism but unlike other nations it is a very quiet racism. So I set out 3 years ago to find exactly what I found. I wanted to help an "old woman", a "black woman" and a "sick woman." The woman I am helping is all of the 3. Being old, sick and black in Cuba is a curse. In fact, every month she tells me that if it weren't for the little help I get to her door every month, she woulld have disappeared. Her salary is a measly 15 USD per month. She might as well not receive any money at all because with 15 dollars you can't do anything. And if I had to help another person, I'd look for another black, old and sick woman. Because if you are white in Cuba someone will help you. If you are a man, you will somehow find your way, but if you are black, old and sick. -- good luck! And I repeat, that is not to say that will not extend a hand to anyone who needs a helping hand. We all do what we can to alleviate the burdens of less fortunate ones. Unfortunately, we are all limited with space, energy, time money, and resources. And if we are going to help out, we need to help the more fragile ones. When the TITANIC was sinking, the life-saving boats were made available for women and children. Does that men no one wanted to help the able-bodied men?

My teacher said that, the best greed is the greed for knowledge and the worst greed is the greed for money and material. Knowledge lasts forever until the end, while money and materials can deplete anytime.

I’ll never forget this person I met possibly addicted to greed. Would do anything for financial gain. Walked all over people without a care in the world and never paid taxes. The saddest thing was their was zero appreciation or understanding of the arts only an obsession of money and things. Such an empty soul I feel bad for these people.

I've also met people like you describe. I feel some disgust and embarrassment when I see the total selfishness and greed, even if it is coming from a place of fear on their part. I don't have the patience to try to work through that with friends anymore, it takes years, I don't have time. Like the other commenter said, I'd rather just move on.
I see this more as a self worth issue. Or trying to buy self worth.
I prefer internal value.
I have come to believe that internal value can not be given, nor taken away, nor bought.
As such over time the individual must grow it, cultivate it.
It must be contextual because a value does not stand alone in a valueless universe.
Once realised it is eternal and inviolate
I know a person who keeps buying brand name bags and stuffs and I asked her why she does that and she answered because the life is short. The same reason I choose to spend my precious time to watch this documentary and meditate for meaning of life and contentment.

At the end of the day, you can't take it with you. I'm glad that I spent my day off watching this wonderful program ( thoroughly enjoy listening to Sheldon Solomon).
This was exactly what I needed to see, to remind myself to be happy with what I already have, even though it's not much, I have what I need and I love what I have.
The secret of happiness is not found in seeking more, but in developing a capacity to enjoy less.

If that were true, we'd still be living in trees. No......wanting more is the basis of civilisation. What I would agree on is that sometimes less is more.

I looked around one day and realized I had a consumer addiction. I couldn’t retire because I needed the money to buy more and more stuff.
Then one day, out of the blue, I wanted to stop. Just stop. So I retired with enough social security and saving to live a modest but fulfilled life. I became-debt free. I started caring for the things I did have. Trust me, I had accumulated so much that I was pretty much set for life.
I can I believe that I’m so happy with “less”. I am bountiful in happiness and doing my dream job: training rescue dogs for the elderly.

Sadly, I lost the love of my life, my fiance, Sam when the pandemic first began. He was only 43 and had so much more life ahead of him. As spiritually inclined as I am based on the innate experiences I've had in my short time on this majestic planet, knowing that we all retire from this planet and go to our true home it still guts me some days to know that he was the MOST antisocial, germaphobic, introverted person I've ever known....and make no mistake I loved him for being so, for staying true to himself....he worked in corporate retail, made a quarter million dollars a year as a young black man from inner city Detroit so he considered himself grateful to have lived past the age of 25 because so many of his neighborhood friends hadn't. He worked his ass off to ensure those he cared for wouldn't have to subject themselves to the same fate that had befallen others that only ever had the same humble aspirations He had....to live comfortably and to give his child a better starting point than the one he had.
He was BRILLIANT, always wanting to better himself. We were in the process of purchasing a 5 bedroom house, we both loved cars and maybe it sounds shallow but I was about to graduate from nursing school after a decade of hellish health issues and so we were planning to get matching BMW's and a Porsche 911 because it's been his favorite coupe ever since he could remember. Ultimately he valued being able to come home to his family and share how our days went with each other above all
In a decade of working for the same company, he'd gotten many promotions, was the regional trainer for the entirety of all newly minted management.....he was essentially on call. He missed family gatherings and many other things that mean so much because he felt why shouldn't it be him to make the tradeoff to ensure his loved ones were taken care of....the only thing he never compromised was his weekly dinner date with his daughter who had just started college and meant the whole world to him. When we met, I was working 2 jobs and still learning my way through nursing school, it is because of his love and sacrifice that I was able to quit one job and spend more time with my own daughter. He paid off the debt I'd incurred when I had to drop out of nursing school due to life threatening illness the first time despite my insistence that he not so that....my university wasn't going to relinquish my degree without it being paid....
He spent 3 weeks on a ventilator before he physicality gave in....I graduated nursing school one month and one week after he passed.....and it no longer felt like something to be celebrated.
One of the last things he texted me was him wondering how in the hell he caught something when he never goes anywhere, because well, he was ALWAYS at work or sleeping. In that moment my heart sank as I realized that could end up being what cuts short everything that meant anything to him. He felt he was doing the right thing, he never even gave other members of our church handshakes because "he knows from experience that most men don't wash their hands after wiping their own asses in public restrooms" (God how I miss his frankness and humor)....2 years later my heart is still shattered and I'm still trying my best to make sense of how the greed of the society we live in led to the demise of one of the most beautiful souls I've ever encountered when he only "played the game" because he would rather taken on the burdens if it meant the people he loved with his all smiled more often....and now here I am, trying to find a way to move forward without part of my heart.
I'm sorry this became so long, I guess I just needed to get it off my chest. I pray that we as a collective begin to see the value of living and experiencing as opposed to existing and self indoctrination.

After living for a little while, I have come to learn that happiness is just about perspective. The way we perceive things greatly influences our emotions and how we feel. If we can change our perspective we have the key to obtaining happiness. 😊
Happiness is an emotion that cannot be permanent. Pursue peace, for peace can remain constant.
This ridiculous obsession many (especially Americans) have with the so-called pursuit of happiness is the reason many suffer from depression. Life is made of good and bad moments. People nowadays, especially this generation, are so weak-minded.

I think people should consider the concept of “enough”.
I have little money, live in a rental and have large student debts. In spite of this, I feel like I understand the joy of living a simple life. I am only sad that nobody will listen to me if I try to share it because I'm considered a person of little significance having few assets.

I have amassed a lot of stuff thru working many many hours at one point in my life I worked 3 months straight sometimes 14 hour days. I had to stay in remote fire fighting camps far away from anything........... So I dont know. What is wrong with a rental home ? Having rentals myself I have fantasies about living in a rental home not worrying about all that is involved As far as people listening to you - I am. I come to vid's like these for the comments that is where I find the most enlightenment

I was extremely traumatized when my mother passed away from a year long battle with cancer. I remember after her passing my sister and I went to her storage that contain family pictures, sewing machine clothes, books ect.. I stood there and look at all her things for about 10 minutes and there I realized "You really cant take it with you!"
Really sorry to hear of your mother's passing. There are people in this world who really believe that they can 'take it with them'. Doesn't matter how many times you mention it, their greed for more and more never diminish until their last breath. Very sad world we live in and its not getting better.

I had exactly the same realization when mine passed away. Her stuff is still here....she doesn't any longer need those things she used to care for so much....those things are meaningless. Her body is no longer here...only the beautiful memories she left on me and on all those who knew her, and even those memories will cease to exit when I'm gone.

We all admire this documentary, the the enlightenment it will bring to ours lives. But many will just carry on as normal in this entrapped life cycle.
They are ENTRAPPED SOULS that are controlled and recycled ♻️. Most were NEVER suppose to be here to begin with. They have little purposes, no meaningful relationships, and deplete this planet like PARASITES. They do not know why they are here, what they are doing or what they SERVE.

The real contentment lies in remembering God, and real satisfaction lies in helping poor, needy and deprived for the sake of seeking the pleasure of God.
I think it is better to help a person for the sake of that person (because you understand/believe that helping them will do good to them) and then you will have that pleasure/contentment because they are doing well. The primary purpose is helping them rather than how we feel after helping them. And I would say that if the priority is helping them, the feeling will always be good after doing that & I too believe that it is from God!
This is one of the best documentary i've ever watched. I never bored rewatching it multiple times.
Money can't solve everything...but Poverty solves nothing
Money is neutral. It can be used for either good or bad.
Poverty could humble a person, i actually would like certain people to experience poverty so they would get off their high horse.
@@carmcam1 Ah, we all have our flaws ay. Money can make our insecurities manifest in a different way. Like if you have bad skin and are insecure, it will manifest differently when you're given concealer. We just all need help addressing our underlying issues.

The funny thing is I'm absolutely not greedy! I've given all my wealth away from family to friends and strangers. I've been taken advantage of, cheated, and I wouldn't change a thing! In fact, I'd do it all over again! There's a certain overwhelming joy to see someone enjoying your generosity that no amount of wealth could ever replace!❤😊

I work in hospice end of life , loving what you do , having introspection , having an open mind to respect others points of views. “Life is short” is a use so often that sometimes we think is not true 💗
death does not make an appt. u can die any day. I am not a part of that "we" u speak of. I m well aware any day can and will be my last on earth, no different than an ant or a cockroach
I also work in palliative care. For me, it’s less important to recognise that life is short than it is to realise that there are moments constantly flying by that could be used more effectively. Even if that just means enjoying the clouds and listening to the birds on a park bench. The two things are sides of the same coin. If you value time and experience over stuff, stress and plans, life ends up feeling longer by default.

I wanted something at age 19. At 26 I wanted something similar, but it changed to a degree. At 35 I wanted something that I'd never wanted before. But only time can give that to me. At 46 I wanted to be 'remembered' and I was certain that desire came from the myriad of mistakes I'd made in earlier times. I had been dissed pretty regularly as a young person for what ever I lacked in the person judging me, eyes. At age 52 I'd had an heart attack and had to undergo a quadruple heart bypass. I wanted various things at that age that I'd never imagined I would ever want. At age 65 I wanted to remain a grateful person for whatever time I had left in this body. Because at age 35 I'd wanted longevity and to reach age 65, I'd felt that I'd acheived that. Soon, I'll be 70, unless I die before then. What I want these days is stuff for others than for me. I have a large extended family. I still have contact with people who I considered friends when I was 15 years old. I ask myself what would I want for them? Different things arise on different days. Amazingly, I have seen some of my wishes come to fruition for them. That gave me great satisfaction.

Yes, the beauty of living is that it will someday come to an end, so the best thing to do is live life as you see fit. I think a big part of living is relationships and who you share your life with. In the end i feel greater happiness giving to others then rechiving things. Im still only 21 but feel like im wasting my life living in a way that i dont want to be living, but its hard to break the ciricle of everyday life. I wonder if i will waste my 20s like i wasted my teens online, i hope that i can fufill my life wishes in this life and if not, that i get another chance at it.

It's just that most people live in the emotional world & don't understand the practical scientific world.
I learned very early in life that having a lot of money doesn't equate to happiness. The millionaires in my family were the most unhappy. I had an aunt who was married to a wealthy doctor, he had a huge clinic in our hometown. He gave her $30,000 a month (1970's to 1990's) as an allowance and it was never enough. A thirst that never could be satisfied. She died poor with no family that went and visited her in the nursing home but me. All I ever rec.d from her was a few pieces of used furniture, the others in my family that she supported for most of their lives and whom she purchased homes and cars for didn't bother to come and visit her, including her own children.

This dream that money equals happiness is not part of our nature, but a dream that is sold to us thought media, advertising, movies, TV, etc...Money seems to exist as a way to control, and to create separation. Money's real power is our belief that it is worth anything more than the paper/plastic it is printed on.

@@missvincent7017 Well I guess by love and health the OP meant to say : live a long healthy life and find a greater purpose than yourself (ie find a love -> have children -> have your children's children). But the thing is , the greater purpose can be achieved through other forms which are even more fulfilling than love for some people at least. Some may find purpose in , for example , fighting diseases, helping poor people , helping and protecting their community etc. Actually now that I think about it , finding love is a really selfish goal 😄, but I guess humans are selfish by nature , so it's no surprise.

I’m not arguing just saying I’ve loved people who were dying and I hoped it would change our relationship for the better but it didn’t they were just as emotionally distance as before they knew they were dying. I tried to reach out but I guess they gave all they could.
I live that life for most of my 60 years...Few material possessions, homeless, abused, hated, controlled and continually lied to.

Life is expansionistic. Plants try to colonize new lands, bacteria and fungi rush accessible resources, animal populations grow when food is plenty.
Seen this way, "to want what you don't have" is very natural. If we didn't have these expansionistic or greedy or adventurous traits, then we may have been happy to stick with our old hunter & gatherer life style.
This expansionistic trait we share with all other species, gradually pushes us to further explore the solar system and nature... possibly doing exactly what the Gods expect.

I just see this video in youtube, and watch it. I am glad I do watch this documentary, as it was back to 6 years ago. It is a very good one. Getting deep in the question of greed, and what has gone wrong about our perspectives, and society. We do need solutions. And it is about our mentality and the system.
This is very true. When I was younger I would have everything than I slowly lost everything from drug addiction. I been sober now for about 4 years so I'm happy I'm doing better than Iwas before.

@Bella i lost my dad three months ago. It’s tough. Nothing to do with greed. It’s okay to feel that we want them back but they could be at a better place than on this earth. Search for Mo Gawdat’s book called Solve for Happy. It has made me have peace.

I walked away from having material things and live in a bus now. If I have to much I live in crowded cramped messy home. So I'm always downsizing. I'm happier than I was in a two story beautiful home that I shared with a narcissistic partner. I have peace of mind. That's every thing I need to enjoy life.

You know, wanting more and more stuff is a response to emotional lack. If you see someone who is obsessed with sucess, money, buisness or things, style, appearance, they are almost always pretty emotionally stunted. The only way to get that emotional growth is in genuine voulnerable intimacy, connecting to your emotions and dropping the show. That means facing all your emotions of jealousy, grief, anger, insecurity. Only a truly courageous person can do that. That is the REAL work.
The most toxic thing I see on the internet are those slick guys in their 20s who wake up at 6, put all kinds of lotions on, eat their perfect breakfast in their sterile glass house, work out, sit down with their mac to manage their buisnesses to buy the sports cars, being "alpha" men, yet their lives look totally.. Flat? Where are the clumsy smiles? Where are the people? Where are the emotions? Where is the true, voulnerable person?
They are barely there, because they aren't emotionally in touch.
You have a very simplistic view of people. Funny how you say that as a white person of the West. Try saying that crap to a person living among rubbish/trash in a developing nation.

My realization of the value of monetary wealth came the week my 64-3/4ths year old father died. He had tremendous $, all left to his widow, understandably. The day he died, he left all that behind. It was an amazing epiphany--I had thoroughly believed he was "set".

This documentary made me take a real look at the damage caused by greed , not only to this country but to the world !!
I have nothing but feels i have everything. i died twice but still here making a comment. a third one won't make much of a difference. i was never jealous, never compared myself to anyone, never wanted more. always grateful with what i have and even don't have. with just a few pieces of clothing does not bother me at all. I have no religion. i am simply free, accept what i can and cannot control. it is a beautiful life. i don't feel like i miss anything. i feel i have everything. watching my favorite music videos over and over everyday is enough to give me that dopamine fix. what more can i ask for? it is all about acceptance and respect. do as you need, can and want and so will i. no judging. i have passed the stage fighting for what i believe is just and right. sverything is relative. just so be it. i have made choices in my life. learned and accepted to live with it. if tomorrow i get another day, will be grateful for it. if not, still grateful for the life lived.

I have struggled with a thirst for wealth since a young boy growing up in poverty. After completing college, investing and frugality, I’m still in the struggle. This had cause me to have serious physiological issues and guilt for having such desires.
I hope that you gain control over this . It's not impossible to stop these feelings .
I hope you see a psychologist and or psychiatrist. I grew up in a similar environment as you but now I can't help but spend everything I make. I can't tell the difference between want and needs
I also grew up in poverty. Do you understand poverty of spirit? That means loneliness, abuse, lack of meaning, lack of love, lack of connection, lack of caring. You need to seek the health of your spirit and you will see that the happiness of things pales in comparison. The happiness of things only feels good when you have given up on (or denied) your spirit. Have you ever looked in someones eyes for more than a brief minute? That is wealth. Connection. Love. The quivering flicker or life itself. Do you have any sense of spirituality? Ancestral inheritance? What is the most joy you've ever experienced? Isn't it the sharing of life that makes us happy?

From as early as I can remember, I've never had any dreams in life. I've never wanted things. A house, car, achievement, esteem, friends, all of these do not matter. I found meaning in love and in caring for others. I've learned that not wanting too much isn't a flaw, it's beneficial. You almost get the morbid feeling that they're doing it intentionally. I stopped consuming media back in 2016 (watching TV, reading newspapers and listing to radio, some media I can't avoid. . . but you get the idea), but even way before that our media have been taking a noticeably unenlightened and self biased forum. Our media is a joke. A circus sideshow; where everything is "entertainment".

I belong to upper middle class abit wealthy family and I personally was proudy about it. In 2018, my father had heart failure and died literally in my arms. I literally swayed away from all the riches as even our BMWs, Expensive health insurance or our money couldn't save him. This changed me a lot and day by day I am more getting out of shackles of money/desire.

My husband and I were talking the other day about how the older we get the less we want to waste! Like our kids won’t finish their meal so we try and finish what we can. I just hate thinking of starving people somewhere and I’m throwing away food, clothes anything I don’t want. It’s crazy. And all the food waste from restaurants. I mean just share that!

@@Henrypitin The one who serves (washes feet) is greater. If you devote your life to service (solving problems) you will be rewarded (you get to exchange value). That's what "seek ye first the kingdom of God and everything will follow". So I agree that serving money can be harmful, I also believe that serving others/God (and not bring exploited) leads to reward (sometimes financial gain)
Then you have more money to serve more people and so the rich get richer. You start with a seed, don't eat it, plant and nurture and you get to multiply your seeds and those with plenty get more. The rich get richer is nature's/God's model depending on what you believe.
Who says I can’t serve two masters I do perfectly fine with my two masters in my life my boss and my lady both are my masters in both I have to serve without a question especially the woman so Maybe you can serve two masters
