  • Social media are influencing the way women feel about their own bodies. Young women in particular are constantly being confronted with pictures of beautiful female bodies online - images which have almost always been digitally enhanced.
This documentary take a long and alarming look at young women whose everyday lives are dictated by the search for bodily perfection. The more users click their way through Instagram, Facebook and so on, the greater their dissatisfaction with their own appearance becomes. Hardly anyone can escape the pull of this illusory world, where beauty, fitness and lifestyle count for everything. The consequences an even be fatal: slimming and fitness crazes, eating disorders of all kinds, body shaming and sexism. During her research, filmmaker Jennifer Rezny came across a Canadian study that found that young women’s insecurity has been increased by social media. It feels like almost everyone is trying to present themselves on Instagram in slick filter-processed selfies these days. Despite increasing calls for diversity, the "ideal” female body still dominates the media's perception of female beauty. Numerous movements and initiatives - even on the part of the fashion and advertising industries themselves - have had little effect. "The female body has always been a carrier of female identity. It's nothing new for us women to be objectified and sexualised,” says Rezny. "There has also been a great deal of social development, but we are still not where we should be and where we women want to be, in an equal society. And in any case, we live in a meritocratic society, one defined and colored by capitalism, which always has to be optimized and improved. It can never be enough.”

But when men have certain expectations and set specific standards for they want in a woman, slim, fit, pretty, sexy, easy to get along with etc.,, out come the cries of "Misogyny!" and "Sexism!" and the "You should accept a woman as she is and at any size because all women are beautiful!" and other such foolishness. Following "body positive", plus size, and fitness models are the same problem as following thinspo. You are still putting all your mental energy and self-value into your BODY. Don't put your self-value in your body. Period. You have a body, it doesn't matter how it looks. Be balanced, healthy, and enjoy what you love. If you love fitness and it's your job or whatever, then fine. But don't do it to LOOK good, do it because you love it. Don't put all your self-worth into your body is what I think the solution is.

I agree to an extent, but I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to look good. It is when things become an obsession and damage your mental health that it becomes a problem. That can happen with anything though not just body image. If you think of your self as very scholarly you can put all your self-worth into your grades and your degree, which can lead to just as many problems with stress or perhaps turning to stimulant drugs to study more. The solution is not to stop trying to get good grades or to stop trying to look good it is to have a balanced, healthy life with a reasonable outlook and to love yourself regardless of the results.

Until 21 I had bad acne, at 22 I noticed that my hair was falling out and I would be extremely careful not to look down because it would show my balding spot. I had gynecomastia (man boobs) until 27, and walked with my shoulders rolled forward to make them less noticeable and always wore jacket even in hot weather to hide them. I actually believed that girls wouldn't want me because I had to have perfect pecs and defined abs. I still have wider hips than normal men and wonder if any girl would want me. Most guys won't open up about their insecurities because society demands men to be a "tough guy" and punishes those who show even a little emotion. I think social media/media in general has the potential to harm men as well as women's self esteem and their self image. We are all humans and experience the same things so we should not separate men and women. Men should also be encouraged to open up, even though its harder for them, it is much better for their sanity and mental health in the long run. Insecurities are insecurities and we should help each other to overcome them, regardless of gender.

Whenever I think of beauty standards, I think of Judy Garland. The girl was 17, and was forced into taking amphetamines and barbiturates to stay skinny. The extra pressure to stay in a certain image, plus the grueling stress of working on a set, the industry is awful. She ended up dying cause she never felt satisfied with her life, and in the end it drives a person mad. Perfection is not worth it.

Well done documentary DW. This should be shown in schools. This starts at an early age. I started ballet at an early age and loved it. I didn't grow up with social media. However, in ballet companies some ballerinas have problems with eating disorders as they cannot contol what they eat. Unfortunately, this body image, reinforced by social media can be a serious issue for health. Although for most principal dancers you're physically working out all the time and eat properly because you need the fuel. Not keeping a balance and you cannot do your job. However young girls, trying to fit an image that the world wants you to be, before you even have formed a strong identity must be very stressful for them. I blame social media for a large part of this. These issues with self image with girls and even boys need to be addressed at an early age. They need support from family and people who have gone thru these issues and gotten help or support and helped to limit time on social media platforms , finding other interests that don't just focus on your looks and body image that the worlds media dictates for you. Thanks for exposing this dark side of social media. 35:21

They just consumed a lot of those fashion magazines back then.

I gave it up on day four since I felt the pressure to always have something "great" to present. My thought was--and still is--this is not real life, it's not giving me joy...so I let it go. Since then, I have been interacting with people--in person--on a daily basis, and enjoying the moments deeply.

"My motivation is to keep getting better. I don't compare myself to others, I just want to improve myself." (13:53)
    - Says a girl who takes part in fitness modeling competitions and shares it all on social media.
I am not saying she is a bad human being, but she is either lying or totally unaware of herself.
Taking part in competition is the ultimate way of comparing yourself to others and living an active life on social media does not support your statement either.
That mindset most people have, associating problems always with others while not reflecting how you contribute to it yourself, is one of the reason why we fail to deal with complex issues.

Most of your assumed body standards might be correct. Not sure about wider hips though, but I think that it depends. But definitely not small noses. Small noses are ugly, big and medium ones are definitely more beautiful. Also people often associate small noses with low IQs. (I'm not saying those people tend to be dumber, I only mean, they're often perceived as dumber by participants in a test who have been shown pictures of people and had to rate them based on their looks.) Maybe that's because people with certain disabilities have very tiny noses and that's probably where that assumption comes from. But I still don't get why anyone could find small noses beautiful. Maybe that was created by men who want women to look stupid. I don't know.

But I also think that social media has given space for minorities and people with different bodies, looks, disabilities, etc to speak up and be role models for others. Some people in the comments say "how can you be so focused on looks when life is more than that?". I agree, but you also have to consider why the focus is on looks in the first place. I struggled with my body image since I was 5 years old. My classmates used to tell me I was fat when I was simply tall. I wasn't visibly hurt by their comments, but I got sick of it after a while. Then I started seeing my body grow, my family was a pretty daunting and toxic one, so my brain probably used my looks as the -rightfully so- most noticeable flaw I had on top of all the others, in order to find some direction to project my issues and pain towards. Even if you are lucky enough not to focus on looks to the point where you cry when you look in the mirror, good for you. That doesn't make those who do (many of whom live in an image-driven society) any more vain. That would be like saying you can't get depressed over moving from a house to another. There are vain people, but this is a real issue, and the reason why we need body positivity more than ever. If we can manage to have one less reason for mental issues around, I'm all for it. Many eating disorders seem to have deeper roots than just what you look like, but when you add insults, jokes, unrequested comments or hints that can have a toll on people. By perpetrating this mindset, we will always keep discriminating people, and the idea that people who care about their looks more than the average person are low on IQ.

I don't feel insecure anymore about my body. When i learned what type of body type is me. I find out i am a classic body type. It was a relief because I never quite felt like an hour glass body type. I learned that my body is perfectly balanced. Anything too much would not look good. My advice for young and insecure people. Educate yourself on what body type you are. What colors look good on you. U have the privilege of internet .

Watching this, I’m so grateful for being 40 now, for having had the privilege of growing up in a world without mobiles and Facebook. When I was 22, I had better things to do than sitting at my parent’s home and to compare myself to photoshopped “models” and feeling inadequate.

Good for you, I see so many 40 plus complaining about their age. I'm 26 and would do anything to have been a teenagers in the 80s/90s. I mean Chris Cornell,. Eddie Vedder, Layne Staley? Fuck yes, No mobiles, no internet, Real life dates rather than tinder. Being on a bus/train and striking conversations with people, looking people in the eyes rather than staring at their phones. Man it must have been wonderful.

I’m 40 as well and I’m sorry but I remember the time period when we all tried to be model thin. Even video vixens were thin during that period compared to now. We just didn’t have social media exaggerating it and easy access to the procedures and plastic surgery. Especially if you were from California. And it didn’t let up until around 2005. But I will admit. It was way better then than now.

Oh whatever. You didn't look at magazines? Or watch TV shows or Movies? Get off your high horse m with that " I had better things to do" 🙄. All you're doing is shaming and blaming women and girls framing body issues as something that's in their control

These Instagram "models" don't always actually look like their very filtered pictures.

This is so sad, it’s all in your mind, it’s an illusion. You have to learn to accept yourself, and love your body. Don’t compare, ever. Best wishes 🌹
