There are strong checks and balances in power but the two party system creates a situation where the people vote along party lines and capitulate themselves to a movement or ideology too broad or alienated from themselves to accurately represent them.
There is no party in the US that fully represents my views. I'm a pan-humanist that believes in human scientific and democratic progress, and I strongly believe that humanity can not survive the 21st century without uniting into a single global government that represents every region of the globe and addresses the needs of everybody equally while allowing discourse among each other.
Without democracy, this creates a situation for future class wars as a result of genetic editing, which will create a new class of humans from the rich and powerful members of society that will be superior in every way to a conventional human. The problem is that the Republicans still control the Senate, so they would need to have enough GOP senators on-board to ensure a successful impeachment, and we've all seen how willing the rest of the party is to just roll over for Trump. The other thing is that the Democrats might decide not to go forward with impeachment proceedings, thinking they'll have a better chance at defeating Trump in 2020 than they would against Pence or some unknown Republican candidate.
