    I think the question I have with integrative medicine is if it is anecdotal/placebo driven or can results be replicated in blind studies? Until that is done more often, I think integrative medicine will be continued to be viewed as “fringe” to its own (and our) detriment. Like the breathing technique shown, while I don’t doubt that it has SOME positive effects, why should it be limited to anecdotal experiences. I see no issue in trying to see if this breathing technique is effective across the board.

      I agree it would be ideal to have everything backed by good research. There are many problems with that though, starting with the fact that we have limited resources in science and a lot of those resources are allocated by for profit companies. They can't really patent a breathing technique, so the chance that this particular tool will be researched depends mostly on the anecdotal evidence stacking up and the magnitude of the effect people say it produces. Plus, the ideas have to start somewhere. If nobody would do anything outside of the scientific domain, it would be very difficult to come up with new ideas.
      There are other scientific theories that hint that there is some truth in the hypothesis that this technique actually works, in this case the fact that breathing out activates the parasympathetic nervous system. To use something that's not backed by research requires some effort and knowledge, but I don't think people always put a lot of thought in choosing a 'fringe' health tool. If it makes sense or sounds interesting that's already enough for some. In the end anecdotal evidence can make you use rhino horn as a supplement, so things are pretty complicated :p

      Joas Mudde that’s not my point. The only way integrative medicine can become more “mainstream” is that if it can be shown there is more beneficial results than the placebo effect. Until and only then, it is hard to convince anyone to try these

      @@21972012145525 Not sure about that. Take a look at acupuncture or CBD oil for example, the former is even proved to be ineffective. Or would you only call it mainstream if it's prescribed by health care providers?

      Joas Mudde the fact that we’re discussing what’s beneficial or not proves my point 🤷‍♀️ if it was supported by strong evidence, it would make navigating alternative medicine a lot easier as well as allowing it to become mainstream

    I think he has some good ideas about diet but much of this needs actual study and scientific evidence.

      Ive read most of his books on health and he has stated that its not necessarily bad to carry some extra weight as you age. Obviously not to the point of the upper end of overweight or obese, but being thin is not indicative of health. He goes into why in his books.

    • @kastaylor01
      @kastaylor01 Před 3 lety +8

      There are a lot of people who look thin but carry body fat internally on organs like the heart, liver etc. and can be sicker than those who hold a little of outside adipose tissue. You need to do some research before you judge a doctor who has dedicated his life to making people healthy naturally. You don’t need to work out constantly and be 5 percent fat. And all people are genetically predetermined how they carry fat. He is 78 years old and his mind is that of a alert and intelligent 30 year old.

      Scientific evidence leads to expensive pharmaceuticals with a long list of side effects. Conversely, he’s promoting breathing exercises which have been done for several thousand years at no cost and no bad side effects. The number one cause of death is the allopathic medical community. You are free to die in whatever fashion you choose, with or without scientific study.
