My grandmother passed on this year at 99 just shy away from 100 years. She was in Malawi. At 99 she was doing everything by herself, living in her own house, attending to her own needs like bathing, feeding etc.
Her eyesight was good, memory sharp and hearing not too bad. She never used hearing aids but one had to speak louder around her especially in the last five years but could hold a conversation.
Since I have known her, she only had one proper meal ( lunch) and in the evening she would have a cup of tea.
She worked ( farming and was an entrepreneur all her life building small houses for rent until her dying day, guess this helped her as well).

    - Community
    - Daily sufficient movement (lots of walking and some cardiovascular and strength training)
    - Being outdoors (sunshine and connecting to the earth through our skin)
    - Circadian rhythm (rising with sun; going to bed after sunset)
    - Proper nutrition (locally grown organic foods and high quality animal foods such as red meat, organs, unpasteurised milk and cheese)
    - A meaningful existence (something to live for other than yourself; giving to others; gratitude)
    - Proper sleep

One thing I never forgot and always repeat to other people - besides food, nutrition, exercise, meditation, and medicine, make ART, MUSIC and NATURE some part of your life - so very true, Dr. Weil's words ~ (Spirituality helps too, if you are open to that and other things, too). I Iove his philosophy on overall health - everything he presents is backed up by a lot of research and he still respects traditional paths when they work best. Glad to hear he is still so active - great interview! Thanks for this!

I grew up in 60s and 70s and my parents didn't trot to the doctor constantly. They had an arsenal of medicines and home remedies they knew how to apply. Frankly if you did feel it prudent to check with a doctor, he would confirm which remedies to apply. FACT doctors would tell people to do home remedies because they work, but the doctors would check out things to be sure it wasn't more serious (like pneumonia or appendicitis). And then send parents home with instructions on what natural remedies to use (poultices, inhalants, salves, tinctures, solutions etc.)
Doctors used and prescribed naturopathic remedies UNTIL pharmaceuticals started making drugs that treated symptoms instead of being curative. Med schools started letting pharmaceuticals companies rewrite the text books and control what is being taught or not taught... apparently this dates back a ways. This is why my parents avoided doctors and went only to older doctors.
Today's doctors have been taught to consider those things "wives tales" and a muttleheaded, hysterical, anti-female persona has been attached to home remedies.

@@petecarroll3949 yes you’re right. However mind-body medicine is helpful for pain that linger long past the time it should’ve taken for it to heal. Sometimes nerves get caught in this chronic looping of pain because of neural pathways constantly firing. Mind-body medicine helps break those repetitive cycles. For acute pain from injuries or infections or injuries etc., you obviously need to treat those with actual medicine. I have an incurable condition that affects my nerves and I was told I would be essentially disabled by this forever because there’s no real treatment other than painkillers. I am now about 70% better by trying to control my own nervous system through mind-body medicine.

I’m so happy to hear from Dr Weil. Very interesting interview. I’ve been a follower of dr Weil for many years. Not only I read and collected all his books, but also visited his clinic in Tucson. My very best doctor for many years was one of first doctors, who went trough Internship with Dr Weil. Thanks to dr Weil and my personal doctor I’m not a stranger to Homeopathy, Ayurveda, and Naturopathy. Dr Weil’s explanation of how Homeopathy works in one of his latest books is very simple and logical. Worth of gold.

I spoke to you on the phone once in Tucson Dr. Andrew Weil and I'm terribly sorry I didn't do more with you. I was writing for Tucson Weekly during that period (2002-2006) and when I see you I have a strong memory of how wonderful you were and are and what a rare gem of a human being you are. I hope to meet you again. Stuart

It’s amazing that I have reached the point of no stress no anxiety, financially secure, I only eat once a day cut out all sugar, bring in my way down, and retired, during my years of working I was the opposite of everything above, but now that I reach this point you have to get and willing to except it, sometimes I feel like jumping out of my skin, I want to get pinched ask my self is this for real,

I always loved Dr. Weil’s attitude and love of natural medicine. Love!!! I grew up reading his books bc my mom had them all. ❤️
He does talk about the “unconscious” mind though, and I think he means the learned behavior, that’s basically part of us now. The thinking, doing, and now just being- all the habits and thinking we do is how we are now, not necessarily WHO we are. I always think it’s a little more complicated in this too - the brain is very complex, filled with neurotransmitters, synapses connections, micronutrients needed to function properly etc. It’s not always just turn your mind off from it and we are healed. The brain is crazy and it’s amazing what they are finding in the world of neurology and brain studies!
Example: you can’t just tell a severely adhd person to go shutoff and focus and start writing lists etc- and then expect Miraculous miracles. It doesn’t work this way....there are true learned behaviors now part of how we are...

I had mental health issues with depression that runs in my family, chronic depression. I put my faith in God & never needed medicine for that again! My mental health HAS Never been better, even through ups and downs in life! I know if your not a believer it might sound strange but there are MANY if not all Christians that would tell you the same. If you have LOVE in your heart… it heals so much!❤️
