I'm so thrilled by the positive responses to this video! I'd love to make a second reaction video to season 2. I haven't watched it yet! Leave a reply with some favorite Dr. Ryan scenes from season 2 that you'd like me to react to (it's super helpful if you happen to know which episode too!).
yes!! please do season 2!!!! i love this
It's so good!! You gotta watch it! And loved your insight into the sessions! :)
Season 2 plz
please do a season 2 reaction. there's this one scene (you'll know it when/if you watch it) that is just executed so well
You don't look like a therapist your so pretty
the therapy session with devi's mom is realistic to how some poc parents react to therapy. my family believes mental health is a white person thing and therapy is a white person thing.
trats crazy to me, like no, it's a human being thing
IKRR
my parents think therapy is for crazy distrubed people and they is really against the whole mental illness thing or they just don't belive it Like If I would tell them I'm struglling with anxiety and metnal illness. They would just invalidate the whole thing and be oh you're making things up, get over it etc..
Its mainly for religious reasons. They may believe in seeking help from God
@@yayag.8990 my gosh religion is such a detriment to society
Do lucifer's therapist!!!
Harvey Specter and Louis Litt's therapists from suits too
Lmao
Omg yessssss
Lindaâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
YES!!
I actually really liked her character. I would feel way more comfortable with her tbh!
I think a part of the reason the therapist had to say a lot of things to Devi that would not be helpful in real life, is just so the audience could better understand what was really happening in Devi's mind (when she's actually explaining it to the viewer).
Yeah, sheâs there to communicate to the audience rather than to Devi.
I absolutely love Dr Ryan. She is so funny. I would really appreciate more scenes with her in season 3. The dynamic and chemistry is great with her and Devi.
Season 2 of this just came out and there are a lot new (good) moments with devi and her therapist, I would love to see your reactions
Agreed!
Yea I wanna see the next reaction
her: i watched the whole first season in a few days
me: i watched the whole season 1 and 2 in 2 days
I watched 2 seasons in 1 day
@@habib-al-azizwoah to do that you would have to spend 10 hours so cool if you do that in 1 day
As a student of psychology it's really annoying to watch shows/movies with an inaccurate depiction of how therapy looks like. Professionals from the field must be consulted before any such representation in media. On the brighter side, it's good to see that going to therapy is being normalised. Also, videos and content like these bridge the gap between what's realistic and what's not.
I have the same reactions to many shows, also a Psych student. It's just so fresh in my mind how proper therapy should be conducted that it can really bother me when therapists act weird in shows. Specifically how they start giving advice and telling their patients what they should do. I wholeheartedly believe that therapy is meant to be used as a method for introspection, so the patient will always come up with answers on their own. It is not your place as a therapist to be telling someone what they should or shouldn't do, what's right or wrong, etc. You should just help them come to a conclusion about what they truly think themselves, even if you don't necessarily agree (except if you have professional knowledge and evidence on why something is actually bad/wrong for them of course)
exactly my thoughts!!
It's for entertainment purposes....not that serious
@@AthenaAthena Even it it's for entertainment purposes, most people who don't know/haven't experienced actual therapy take this 'faulty' representation as the reality and have misconceptions. It may seem insignificant but it is important to spread awareness about how these things are actually irl, it being already stigmatized.
@@seeyafornow2642 exactly!!
This is such a wonderful response video, I enjoyed the fact that you not only expressed the value of not jumping to assumptions, but also establishing those healthy boundaries between patient and therapist. I hope you make more of these videos, so cool to watch!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have more in the works!
@@PrivatePracticeSkills A good one is from a show called Lucifer. It has a therapist called Linda.
I feel Dr. Ryan is better equipped with handling adult issues than teenage ones...Sometimes you connect better with certain age group than others..You should know your strengths as a therapist..
As an adult Iâd find a different therapist too tbh. She did well with Nalini but the way she acts with Devi is something that probably shows up in her sessions with adults too.
Yep, she is being a mom and not a therapist.
It made for good writing for the show! Not so much for good therapy :)
moms make the best therapists. been in therapy since i was a teen and in the 20+ years since the best therapist? a black mom. not my mom but hey its valid!
@@serenityq26 moms are good therapist depending on their upbringing. If your mom is as closed minded as mine, welp youâre not gonna grow up well
I wanna say I disagree. I first saw my therapist when I was 13, Iâm almost 21 now, and we have grown close in our patient client relationship. We talk about anything and everything. Sometimes you need the blunt honesty. Her approach was professional especially when you are close to your therapist.
Crazy ex girlfriend has a lot of episodes focused on mental health and therapy. It would be interesting to see a reaction to this series.
YESS! And the therapist even had a solo number.
YEEEES
The best show
I was just gonna recommend it!
Oh yeah ! I almost forgot about that show. The first season was so good lol
The scene with Deviâs mom was definitely one of my favorites and most genuine scenes in the entire show.
Honestly never been to therapy but I feel like if I ever would I feel like someone like Dr Ryan would be my first choice
She is direct and soothing. I would appreciate that istead of someone who is a bootlicker for the sake of it
Please react to the therapist in Netflixâs Atypical
YES JULIA
Yesss
Ohhhh, this is a good one!! I feel like her therapy is more "realistic" lol.
@@therealkoolaidandkale except for the fact that one of her patients somehow knows her home address lol
As a person who's had therapy almost all of my life I would like to add one thing.
I have had therapists that treat me like you seem to proclaim, responsible and work like. It has helped me in younger ages to keep me "safe" but it have also stunted my progress very harshly.
Then I have had therapists that go the extra mile, they treat me like a human, like I am responsible for my own life. They have given me a safe space to grow and learn more about myself so that I could handle my own reality.
For someone like me that have both autism and emotionally unstable personality disorder this worked better since I can act like "Devi". (Completely irrational one second and then super calm and logical the other.)
Lastly I just wanted to add that your empathy really shows in this video and it is beautiful to see.
It is true. Not many people like clinical and serious therapists. People want to feel like they have an actual friend to talk to.
While I definitely agree I feel like there needs to be a balance
@@darasimiAdj68 even though i agree they should feel like its a safe space and they're talking to a friend, a therapist is not supposed to be a friend. there needs to be a balance. the representation in shows of therapists being all fun and sassy doesnt work in real life. there is a code of conduct and boundary, which if not followed, hurts the patient itself.
@@seeyafornow2642 due to the nature of their job so there won't be patients expecting more from a therapist I think I do understand your point and agree but still. A lot of people might not actually necessarily open to someone who doesn't extend a branch of some form of friendship. Yes it's business but it doesn't have to feel like that all the time.
You should react to the Euphoria episode with Jules's therapist!
YES! I suggested this show on your poll as well after having binge watched it lol & am so happy you did this reaction video! Looking forward to more âșïž
Oh super fun! Thanks for the suggestion!
I love Dr. Ryan! I canât wait to see more of her. Every therapist is different. I think perhaps sheâs more like a mental health counselor.
Love this post. It's a great format for teaching new therapists, also.
I love how articulate you are!
I love how this feels like observing a supervision session for Dr. Ryan
I loved your feedback. Although this is a fictional show like many others they cut the boring part and add fun part so they don't lose people's attention. The show is about Devi and not the therapist. But I think your comments are so true and interesting, I would definitely recommend your channel to all those who are being trained or want to learn what therapy to definitely is about to watch your videos. You bring up a lot of valid points. Thanks for sharing.
I love this show but its representation of therapy really bothers me--Dr. Ryan is always telling Devi how she *should* feel instead of facilitating Devi's self-dialogue, and she's often harsh/dismissive. In general I think TV therapists are way more prescriptive than real life (good) therapists
this video was so helpful! i love dr. ryanâs character from a comedic standpoint and i think she has some key moments in the story where she says the right things, but i dont like her much as a therapist. the things she said somehow annoyed me and when you explained the âmom therapyâ thing it made complete sense to me. she actually reminds me of my psychology teacher (who is also a certified therapist and plays the role or âcounselorâ) who i really dont like because she gives this sort of vague advice that sounds like it was taken from an instagram self care account run by a teenager (lol, maybe im roasting her a bit too much). i have depression and ptsd so several times iâve had to had a talk with her becase i needed some extra help and she just made me feel like i needed to try harder, like if going on runs and having a better sleeping schedule would fix my life (of course with her not being my actual therapist i also dont expect her to do much more). it really opened my eyes how you separated this sort of âmotherly adviceâ from real therapy and i hope to be more aware of the difference from now on.
Loved your reaction. You sound so competent and professional.
This was lit! You should do all the shows and movies that have therapy in them. Very helpful!
Love this video as I love this show and also am practicing in session techniques and particular these ones. Such a golden nugget!!
Would love to see a reaction to therapist scenes in My Mad Fat Diary, its such an enjoyably good show.
AgreedđŻ
Yes! This would be so valuable!!
One of the best tv therapists that helped me a lot!!!
LOVE that show!!! Great therapist - i sometimes think of him while working with my patients.
yess!!!
Loved this show!!!
Iâve been watching Wentworth, and Iâm in season 7 now. They have been through two therapists in this show, and season 7 therapist has actually said some semi-therapist things in a fictional role!
I love your attitude. I think you are a really good therapist :)
You should react to the therapist In atypical season 1!
Yes please!
Yesss!!! Would love that
Yes!
this show is so fucking good! just watching that scene with devi's mom and dr. ryan: TEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and despite all your dislikes of her therapy methods: they all rang true for me. she would be a great therapist for me cause im like "yes, great advice" "so true i should do that" "yes mama yes". but im not the mess that devi is haha i got 99 problems but self awareness isnt one ;) like when im acting out i know whats the root of the problem thanks to therapy like this that i got from dr. elaine nelson #blackwomenrock get my journey, get my music, feel my feelings and then move on
even thought this scenes rang true for you, this isnt how professional therapy works. there is a certain procedure and code of conduct they have to follow. some things she said (the therapist in the show) are the last thing actual therapists should say; its far from a "therapy method".
As a practicing, licensed therapist, I would caution what is characterized as unethical or running contrary to a clinician's code of conduct as opposed to someone's theoretical framework or how they best establish rapport with an individual. Every person needs to find a therapist that works for them and that means the style that is a fit for one person may not be the style that fits for another person. You meet the client where they're at and as long as you are not encouraging a dual relationship and documenting your approach appropriately, and the client is aware of what is happening, then the therapeutic service is predominantly an individual experience that will not look the same across the board. What I do as an LCSW may not look the same as what an LMFT does which may not look the same as an LMHC, LPC, or PsyD.
I would love for the writers to stumble across this video and learn and take notes for s3!
I feel like Dr.Ryan is more of a friend to Devi than a therapist which is the relatipnship they have established and I'm here for it.
This was sooo interesting and helpful as a psychology student!!! Please do moreeeeđ«
Thank you for this video!! When I watched the show I was actually mad about how the therapist acted an how therapy was displayed in general!
Tbh i would love to have a therapist like this
@@aqualina4668 same honestly. Might not be according to the rules but her advice was top tier
Ikr! the scenes might be funny but the representation of a therapist is quite incorrect and some people here in the comments think this will be better and will help them. It doesn't work like this in real life, a sassy and funny therapist looks good in shows but irl there is a certain procedure and code of conduct.
@@seeyafornow2642 but people know what would make them feel betterđ. Despite the codes of conduct set up for reasons. It still undeniably will make them feel better if they think so
@@seeyafornow2642 100% yes! I would have thought an apparently progressive show like this would do a better job at portraying therapy.. imo its just a cheap solution, they should have known better
That was such an interesting and entertaining video đ I love that you don't interrupt the scene during a sentence but we also get to see your opinion which you explain after the whole scene is over :)
This therapist's approach mirrors the experience my sister had with her first adult therapist - she felt not listened to, like the therapist was pushing her agenda and ignoring her actual needs. Luckily my sister had experience with a child psychologist she trusted and was able to return to him in his young adults' practice. By analysing it as you do but in a classroom setting under the supervision of a teacher or mentor, I wonder if this kind of media would be a good teaching tool for psychologists/psych students to reaffirm the impacts of this approach
Dr Ryan is brilliant, we should all try to be more like her.
Ozark's therapist might be a hoot. Then there's the infamous therapist from the Sapranos. Thank you! That was really interesting!!
I love this so must, thank you for this. I'm subscribing â€ïž
Pls do season 2 as well. Dr Ryan has a lot more scenes in the next season.
Love it!!! Extraordinary reaction!!!
I enjoy your channel, I think you should more of these!
The scene with Devi's mother was awesome to me.
Dude no, the Therapist in Crazy Ex Girlfriend, so much fun. highly recommend
You should do one of Celeste's therapy scenes from Big Little Lies, I'd be really interested to hear you're thoughts on that:)
Yes that
I recommend maybe watching the Jules Euphoria Special Episode, I would like to hear your thoughts.
The show âWanderlustâ would be a good one
i really hate it when therapists keep wanting to bring up what they think is the major event to talk about, like if people werenât more complex than having just one big issue. i personally lived something pretty traumatic when i was young, and (because im a minor and my parents brought it up to them) therapists kept trying to make me talk about it when itâs not something that affects me to this day. yes, it did for a while but i learned to heal and it doesnât stop me from doing anything anymore. i dont deny it was hurtful, i dont try to shut down any emotions, and im not trying to repress it as they seemed to believe i did. when its been brought up, i talked about it. i also showed discomfort because it was something my parents wanted me to talk about and therapists constantly bringing up felt like they were breaking my trust. but i constantly felt like they wanted me to have a breakdown because of it, because they kept thinking i was repressing a pain that just doesnt hurt me like it did. itâs clear that deviâs case is quite different, but itâs still very unhelpful and sort of unkind to want to push a patient to say or speak about something they just dont feel like talking about, and denying what they DO wanna talk about in the process. my life is full of things that make me happy, sad, distressed, and an infinite etc., if you try to decide whatâs more important for a patient based in your criteria, when they are actively disagreeing with you, thatâs just gonna push them away from therapy and from you.
Dr. Fang rocks!
Yes the patient interrupting the therapist. Situation was so much more realistic on crazy ex girlfriend. I love how hard Rebecca's therapist tries so hard to keep her composer in those moments. Please react tp crazy ex girlfriend.
Crazy ex girlfriend is a masterpiece
@@henla6559 yes it's one of my favorite TV shows.
what shows show a more accurate representation of therapy ?
I would love to see you react to the therapist from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt! She's only in a few episodes in season 2 (and later, I think, in one episode in season 4, but not really as a therapist).
I've had a therapist like that before.
She kept pushing me to try meditation because she thought it would help, even though I tried it and told her how well it went - I had a panic attack.
She kept pushing me to try again.
In the end I went to see someone else who helped me work through my problems without pushing me to do things that freaked me out(when I wasn't ready), and with, suprise, ZERO meditation.
To be fair I know meditation helps a lot of people with trauma... but I was having flashbacks whenever I had a quiet moment so meditation right from the get go should've clearly been off the table.
My counselor told me journalism would help it does help me since some things are just to hard to explain. Also if I go into full break down mode and my counselor can't talk at school, the teacher put me in the hall to calm down
Davey running through the streets before she busted through the door helped her nervous system discharged some of that energy!đ€
Only if she wasn't ruminating on her concerns in her mind ;)
*Devi
That thing about therapists being people outside of the office lol with my therapist half the session would consist of us talking about his life too. Idk itâs just calming and humanizing.
Gotta do Julia from atypical. Think sheâs amazing.
Great video! I love your laugh đ
Really enjoyed your video. First time on your channel. I think you are really good at what you do. Could you also post videos where you help regular people (as opposed to therapists starting a practice, which you mentioned you do) use psychology to deal correctly with relationships and not mess up their lives. I naturally gravitate to 'mom therapy' dealing with my young adult children and have failed miserably. Help!
Can you do the therapists from Monk? I've always been curious how good as therapist they both were.
Yesss!
More of never have i ever pls !
I would love to see you react to the therapist from My Mad Fat Diary
Wasnât Dr. Ryan in the Mom scene also making assumptions?

You should react to the show private practice. I would love to see your take on some decisions violet makes as a therapist
I absolutely love this show but the therapy scenes put me off a little at times bc I often that "no therapist would react this way!"
Could you please do Dr. Akopian from crazy ex girlfriend?
There's a show on Netflix about a problematic and stalker-ish therapist called Gypsy. Not sure if u r up to reacting to that since it's kinda dark n it's about a questionable therapist but I love the show. Would love a psychologist's view on the lead character, like why she become a problematic therapist. What's her underlying issue etc. Wud be interesting~~
Please do season 2!
Please do season 2!!!
I just realized I did mom therapy with all of my friends.

You should do the therapist in the bad mom's movies. Because she is funny as hell
I really enjoyed the therapist from one of the riverdale episodes
Yes, I agree with you on that I had enjoyed it as well. It is season 4 episode 8.
I feel like they should have had you write the script for the therapist role!
7:14 she was really struggling with something and was desperately looking for help, even though you might not want to reinforce them not to do that again, you shouldnât turn your back on them at this moment.
Please, please analyze Maid on Netflix. Thereâs not a therapist to react to but so much to discuss and interpret. Would love to hear your reactions! Just an idea:). Love your reactions here!
Iâd love for you to react to Good Will Hunting :)
Does therapist have a fixed rule on how and what should be said to every person coming to therapy or they can change the book written approach and add little bit of their character to their approach based on the the person coming to therapy?
just breathe, whenever i cry
Please do Season 2
In my opinion Devi's therapy is dopee
its totally a different concept and its actually realistic for premature recovery supports in the intermediate care where my therapist does put barriers on her support n trust with me by not validating my reasoning for thingz until i bring my guardian to court n prove her wrong with me-my therapist always reoccuringly asks me do i benefit from her services and why li benefit-since watching thiz video and realizing how unpractical my therapy session dynamics are, imma make some changes--thanku
