❣DIY Fairy House Using Jars❣

- Hi, in this video I show you how you can make a fairy house using some of your old jars. I always save the ones with unusual shape that inspire me. This isn't a follow along project, because you might not have these exact jars laying around, but it's a proof of concept, something to get you started with your own jars and bottles. The way I start such a project is by selecting a few jars and play with them until I have an interesting shape, not too symmetrical, with a variety of thicknesses and heights. The next step is to glue them in place using hot glue. I know hot glue doesn't bind them together but it will hold them enough time for me to finish with the first layer of paper clay. I created some volume at the roofs using cardboard from pizza boxes. These cardboard shapes don't need to be perfect as we will cover them in clay. Next step is of course adding the first layer of paper clay. If you're new here, the clay I usually use is "Das modelling material" because it has dimensional stability when it dries, which means it doesn't shrink like a regular clay so it won't develop cracks around the jars. When adding this first layer you must decide where the windows will be and cut them out while the clay is still wet. You may try to smooth this first layer as good as you can, I used some water for that. Don't get greedy with the first layer! Don't try to finish the whole house because you will end up with irregular shapes and bumps all over the surface that will need more time to fix. Just cover the whole surface, cut out the windows and smooth the surface as good as you can. When the clay is dried it's time to make the details. I added roof tiles, wooden beams, window frames, door frame, rocks at the bottom of the house and that's about it. For the coloring part I used watercolors that come in tubes. The technique I used this time is different. I started with the light colors first, taking advantage of the white of the clay to get some beautiful colors. Then I added very diluted darker colors for the shadows, corners and textures. That's basically it. The two tower jars can be used as storage compartments for keys, money, jewelry and at the bottom you can easily add lights and make it a night lamp. I use a paper clay. I either buy it or make my own depending on what I want to create

The homemade one is not that soft and is only good for textured surfaces like stones and tree bark. It is very cheap to make so it might worth to sand it and work it a little more than buying a paper clay. However, you can't keep it more than 5 to 7 days in the fridge. It has the best consistency when you just made it and it's fresh, so I would recommend you use it in the same day or the next and don't make more than you need
3. Can I use air dry clay? What's the difference between air dry clay and paper clay?
Often times shops will sell both paper clay and ceramic clay with the same label "air dry clay". It's true, both are air hardening but there are quite a few differences: air dry clay(ceramic clay) is actually mud, natural clay, while paper clay is made with cellulose and other ingredients. Paper clay is stronger than air dry clay(ceramic clay). Air dry clay (ceramic clay) shrinks and the paper clay does not shrink. This is why paper clay is the better choice for my kind of projects. My projects usually require you to cover a jar or a plastic bottle. If the air dry clay shrinks and the bottle or jar remain the same size... you guessed it... your air dry clay will crack all around. It might be a lot cheaper but it's not what you need for these projects.
4. My clay cracks, how do you cover the cracks?
You don't, you change your air dry clay to a paper clay! See why at the previous question
5. How to waterproof my paper clay creations?
I recommend using a yacht varnish. Apply a few coats and make sure you cover it all around so no water touches your clay

My granddaughter and I tried this. They turned out great! Thanks for the inspiration! I bought air dry clay for my granddaughter to use and I used salt dough. Both ways were fine. I have salt dough Christmas ornaments that I made 35 years ago and they still look like new. My favorite part of making the house was painting it! 😊

Блестящая работа, как с гипсом, так и с красками. Вначале показалось чуть небрежной, да и использование банок выглядело неоправданным, но результат действительно потрясающий. @@stepanrubcov219 судя по серому цвету, это, скорее всего, одна из разновидностей папье-маше или структурная паста с содержанием шпатлёвки. Папье-маше можно сделать с содержанием клея, ПВА в том числе, тогда масса липнет на поверхность, она хорошо принимает любую придаваемую ей текстуру - вид камня или дерева, выбор за вами, а далее остаётся дождаться высыхания. По высыхании образуется достаточно прочный слой, который можно в дальнейшем обрабатывать: зашкуривать, выравнивать, раскрашивать. Поищите, забейте в поисковой строке различные рецепты этих масс.
Есть очень интересные и простые составы, вам понравится.)) Например, у мастера Сергеича.

I began watching this video creation this morning and I couldn't take my eyes off of it. I even watched it twice. You know, I think of myself as creative person and when I see what is being done here I am amazed and overwhelmed because I KNOW what it takes when you put 50, 60, 100 and even 200 hours into a project. This person has taken something rather common and made something creatively beautiful out of the individual mind. So, we aren’t just getting a pretty object. We are instead seeing a clear representation of the beauty of the mind.
With each step I could hear and see the thoughts in the person's head and that made me feel very in touch with what they were doing. I can't begin to describe the amount of hours and detail and thought put into a project like this and all the while the person is making this they are making it to their like and their satisfaction.
Making something for someone else versus yourself is a totally different thought process. This person was creating this as they went along and they made sure they enjoyed what they saw every step of the way. It had to make sense to them and it had to satisfy them first before ever bringing us joy. Unfortunately, that also makes it even more difficult if you decide to sell it because how do you put a price on creativity and passion and love? Like I said before, I consider myself an artist and I like to make things of beauty and things for other people but sometimes it's so difficult to give them away or sell them at the end of completion. In fact, I wish people could see my creations and then find a smile on their faces because of it. I just want to say that I understand this person's heart, this person's thought process and their willingness to give a very large part of themselves to us. I truly enjoyed following the artist each and every step of the way and I found it intriguingly inspirational.
What if? Every time a person creates something beautiful out of themselves and give it away then somehow they lose a part of themselves? If that were truly the case then this person would have sacrificed much. You touched me. Thank you
