  • Rivian R1T Owner and Bronco Owner take their trucks off roading in Hollister Hills, Ca and fight the Tank Tramp. Will they get out? At what cost? What will break? Find out in this video.
    This video highlights some differences between All Purpose Off Road and Rock Crawl Off Road settings on the Rivian R1T. It also shows the use of MaxTrax to get over a slippery slope.

    The R1T needs "locker mode" where all 4 wheels spin at the same rate, no matter what. Should be an easy software addition.

      @@jamesdoesburg6128 That doesn't do what Jay is talking about. It spins wheels that are getting no traction and often isn't applying enough torque to wheels that are. If the software is set so that they have to spin at the same rate it would prevent this issue.

    From what I've been hearing, you have to stay on the throttle for the computer to try different traction scenarios and find the one that works. As soon as you let off, you keep resetting that action.
    Also, if you need "locker" type action, you MUST use Rock Crawl as the all purpose is designed with a rear bias that allows sliding the rear around.
    Apparently learning to drive the Rivian is not a simple process as many of the off-road rules don't apply.
    The plastic door and rocker plates are a weak point. Cheap and easy to repair, but annoying that they are designed to be sacrificial. Hopefully the after market will see this as an opportunity and come out with some more sturdy alternatives that save the trim.

    • @rexbriggs3251
      @rexbriggs3251  Před 2 lety +2

      Really good insights. Are there places to read how the bias is set by mode? I'd love to have an intellectual understanding so I can check it with the visceral feel of the modes when off-roading.

      @@rexbriggs3251 Sadly, I don't know of any. This is just my opinion watching a bunch of people's videos and some of the discussions that I've read.
      It would be nice if Rivian would produce a guide that explains what the goal of various programming is and how the truck is designed to react to different situations. Of course, the truth might be that the programming is still being fine tuned. You might go out one day and go "WOAH, this works so much better now." The joy of OTA updates.

    • @LarsDennert
      @LarsDennert Před 2 lety

      Most active track systems require a constant throttle. On ice vehicles 1500 rpm minimum. Stabbing the throttle and backing off when you are almost out just won't work. Looks like rock crawl is the real mode you want to always leave it in.

      I guess I could have spent another 20hrs playing off road. When I’ve done trail driving, it’s more around .7 mi/kWh, so the Tank Trap escape certainly brought the average down, LOL.
