  • Exploring the great basin in Nevada, I got a flat, but I don't have a spare. This is my experience with the bag of TireJect , and how Rivian support app worked.

Wow this is the content youtube was created for. Thanks for this helpful info.

Braver soul than me driving my Rivian w/o spare. Have been out in middle of nowhere NV, but pretty much stuck to the pavement. Still off-roading here and there, but no further than a few miles from pavement or civilization. Impressed the goop took care of that leak. I had to use it on smaller leak, and then on larger leak different tire had it patched at Les Schwab (luckily nearby).

Rex, this is super! Thanks so much for taking the trouble to video your way through this!

Glad it was helpful! (AND really glad it worked).
Who knew that I'd get to learn how to hold an iPhone while finding a leak, removing/replacing a valve stem and injecting TireJect.
I'm kind of glad it happened, because I will have a spare soon, and if I hadn't had the experience, I would simply reach for the spare. But, now, with this experience, I may try the tireject first if/when I get another flat because it was easier than swapping tires.

Rex, love the videos. Great to see how well this product works in real life. I’m fortunate to have my full sized spare, but really pleased with how well that got you back up and running. Let us know if you find yourself in the Denver area. Would love to go hit up some trails with you sometime.

I’m actually flying to Denver today to find a house in the centennial area. Hope to be out there by middle of next month. Would love to join the Rivian group on the trails! (Dibs on sport mode).

We are all moved in and home charger installed. I’m in Greenwood Village and would love to meet up with Rivian folks in the area. It would be fun to head somewhere to off-road, and try different modes to get to trail head and compare the range difference.

Nice video thanks. I have 21s on mine currently and am ordering the black 20ATs (with spare and jack kit) like yours. Not sure if I will receive those all at same time or will have to run without a spare for a while, like I am now. I could be wrong but for a puncture like that I would try a regular plug before the valve inject stuff. But looks like the new stuff (that comes with the truck) is a lot better than the old fix-af used to be...so maybe my old logic doesn't apply. Good that you had a plug as well if necessary and glad you were good getting out. Curious as to how many miles are on those ATs..didn't look like a ton of tread depth for an LT. My experience so far with Rivian service/support as been good as well. Enjoy. It's a heck of a vehicle.

I just picked up our R1T on the 12th. Did the tire goop come with your truck or dod you purchase it later? I was unable to get my spare (as I configured) because they are putting all on the vehicles (ours are 21's). Thx for the video.

How was charging on hwy 50?

    • @rexbriggs3251
      @rexbriggs3251  Před 2 lety +5

      Good question. It wasn't great.
Once you leave Reno heading east, there are only 50kw DC chargers for a long stretch, and they are expensive (60/kw). The 50kw in Middlegate Station didn't work at all. A 6kw AC charger did work, and I charged for about 10min while I explored plugshare App to see where else I could go.
This Middlegate station had this huge shipping container with a loud generator with solar panels running to power the charger that didn't work, Seemed like a net environmental loss given the only thing the generator was powering is this little 6kw charger. Or, maybe it powers the restaurant at the location too. It was really, really remote. Plugshare says it should be 120kw, which would have been great. It was like an off-grid solution that didn't work.
So, I went to Clear Creek Station (EV Connect App required). That worked fine, but was also 50kw. I plugged in my induction hot plate and made some food while I waited for the hour to charge up.
Next, I was headed to Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park. The turn off was at Middlegate, but since I overshot it, the The Rivian Nav had me continue down 50... turns out the Nav location of the state park was wrong. It put me on the other side of the range. So I checked out the Pony Express trails and used the 50kw charger in Austin, NV. The guy at the gas station/EV charger in Austin, NV chatted with me. He has a Model Y, and said he knows the guy that does the repairs, and would make sure he knew it needed to be fixed.
It was fun to explore, but I definitely would like more 350kw (or at least 150kw) in more locations. It is important to check plug share to know what is operational and what isn't.

Pirellis look to still be junk after all these years. Had it been a better off-road tire a plug would have been a better choice. That goop makes a mess of the rim, on the inside. Since you have a compressor, air down to 20 or less. The softer tire is less likely to puncture. That shouldn't happen on a simple graded road. Smart to have a spare too as well as a spare vehicle; ie buddy.

Too funny, thanks for sharing. Can I ask you why you go to an isolated area without a spare tyre ? That Rivian has a puncher kit and compressor just for people like you.

Those tires are totally inappropriate on a 7000lb “off road” truck . The first thing you should have done was driven down to one of the 10,000s of tire shops (or ordered online ) and installed some E load mud terrain’s . BFG KM3 or General or Toyo… many options. No offense dude but offloading wasn’t just invented yesterday. People have been taking out their trucks (even heavy tank trucks like yours) off-road for decades and have come to the conclusion that any stock tire is absolute trash. Shoot you should probably consider a non-radial tire like the BFG Baja TA because your truck is so flipping heavy. I can’t even imagine how much stress the sidewall see on that heavy truck especially when you’re drifting around across dirt and rocks. Who cares about your range , do it right.

I'm sorry this happened to you, but you really should be rolling on all-terrain tires with beadlocks. Especially if you are out in the middle of nowhere like that riding all alone. The second rule of riding on that sort of terrain is never go alone. The third rule is to have a full size spare.

Fair points. I do like some solitude. It helps me think through complex data science problems, which is part of what prompted the trip. I do have a satellite coms, back-up water pouches, etc. and my wife was my first call when it happened. I strongly support your point. Go with someone or have a satellite coms device and someone you know will get the call/message and can follow the satellite bread crumbs.
Yes, yes, yes on the spare. I’ve been waiting for one, and now I will get one at the end of the month. Definitely order the spare with your order because it is a long wait to get one after delivery.
I was happy with how TireJect performed. I was skeptical when I was it included by Rivian to handle flats, and glad it worked.

@@rexbriggs3251 I saw your video on power usage on trail riding, it was very interesting. Could you please do a video that shows how much power you use if you leave the HVAC turned on, cook food, and with a regular 120 volt mini fridge? I am planning on getting the Cyber truck and I want to get an idea of how much power is used in an HVAC and camping situation.
I guess you could even do the video when you're on driveway since it doesn't matter where you park, just want to see what the power draw is over a weekend.

Have you been to Delamar, aka The Widowmaker? You get there, off-road, from the 93. And on the way in you'll pass the cemetery. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delamar Nevada Nearby is Delamar Lake Landing Strip that was once used as drop point and emergency landing strip for the X-15 rocket plane program.
