I appreciate your opinion, and I'm not a patron but all I would say is that your opinion is important and I don't completely disagree I just would say these guys are buying the roadster, the semi, and cybertruck ,maybe they actually need the cash.
Hmmm 🤔
What happens to the mattress after the 100 days? Do they just give it to someone else?
@@michaelparker5030 most of these companies give it to goodwill, this lets them write it off as a cost at one end and get a tax break for the gift at the other end
@@Keneo1 😎✌️
Are you guys from the greater Boston area?
Dealers and legacy automakers have been overcharging for parts like rims that you can buy later on your own.
@@i2ambler2002 they saved $1500 .. they’ll still have saved $1k if they decide to purchase the $500 rivian crossbars.
@@i2ambler2002 500 is 1/3 of their savings. Not even close to almost all.
Exactly. Thousands of ppl pay double for dealer floor mats and ski racks every single day.
Tonight at 11pm: people pay MSRP for their cars.
And the crazy thing is that most people don’t know that with tires (off-road for example), the ones that you get from the dealer are usually a lower quality version than if you buy it on your own
Not to mention, a lot of these rooftop tents are very similar to one another. A Tepui tent was very similar in spec and price to the Roam tent I eventually bought, except the Roam also came with windows in the rainfly, a gear net, and boot bags.
Like to point out that using a Tesla Model Y has about the same room to sleep.
Advantage of Model Y is: Heat/Air condition, cheaper, much easier to set up, much easier to get in and out, and does not effect the range with big thing to carry around.
Yep, and the Cyber Truck will be even better and my pre ordered dual motor with FSD is less than a Y.
You guys are a cult 🤣 enjoy your 100k golf carts the rest of us will keep our houses
That is well and good, but if you are travelling, you probably have suitcases, cooler and other stuff that is in the MY hatch area, that would have to go somewhere, besides the front seats. So you would need a tent or luggage tray on the hitch to store the stuff while u slept.
The model y is can't off road. The R1S is an electric Range Rover. The model Y is a fast electric Toyota Rav4.
@@terrysullivan1992 We hope it will be less. Will Tesla honor the price at time of order??
You guys haven't accounted for the fact that the $450 crossbars are included with the purchase of the Rivian tent. For preorder customers, the tent and crossbars cost $2650. Retail cost on the Yakima Skyrise HD is $2399, so I don't think the preorder price is egregious.
Yeah, I think that since they were able to utilize REI’s member perks that for them it was a great deal, but I’m not sure if they used the 20% off deal that REI sends out like twice a year for its members. If they did, one would have to wait and utilize that, in which case they are right, and the deal is unbeatable. I think that their over arching message is just that companies sometimes lie in order to try and force you to buy products from them when you don’t have to.
Love the camp kitchen idea. I have been brainstorming ideas on how you could use the massive frunk in the F-150 Lightning to put in a small camp kitchen with everything connected to the outlets in the Frunk.
Doesn't the lightning have a pull out work table option?
In which case, "it ain't rocket science"
We would like to consider ourselves expert campers having on motorhomes truck slide in campers and now we are roughing it with just an ARB fridge on the backseat. That will only fit behind the driver in a mega cab and you can still have seating for four in the truck. The camp kitchen would consist of a stove it could be propane white gas one to three burner whatever you want or you could go that electric induction set up for more money. A one or 2 gallon water spray bottle pressurized can be your pressurized water pressure sink, bring a dish tub and a fiber scrubber and some environmental soap. Chairs and a table and you’re camping. No sense having to complicate it this mobile set up will move from truck car to truck
@@redwood6737 did anyone teach you how to write coherent thoughts?
Your price savings are a bit disingenuous. When you purchase the tent through Rivian, the price includes cross bars, $450 before price increase, $500 after. That reduces your savings to about $1,000. While obviously great savings, most of us don’t live near tax free states, nor is it worth spending hundreds of dollars to travel long distances to save ~$150. Getting it on sale is great if the timing works out - REI has their 20% off sale for members happening at the end of this month. MSRP for the Yakima SkyRise HD Medium is $2,399. With my local sales tax (6.85%) plus Cross Bars comes to $3,063. Basically the same as buying from Rivian, but the warranty is greater on branded equipment. I’m
Happy you saved money on the tent, but your comparison is not apples-to-apples.
I thought of buying aftermarket tent for my R1S (whenever it's delivered), as I thought I can save money if we can make it work. So I can see the point here. But I have an issue with this video. I watched so many videos from Now You Know and liked them all until this one. I am surprised they left out the cost of cross bars as you pointed out. Another issue is that for Pre Match 2022 orders, Rivian tent price is $2650. It's ok if this was omitted because new orders don't get this price. But did they not know about cross bars or did they intentionally leave that part out? Either way, Sorry to say this Now You Know, you could have done better.
REI warranty is 1 Year. Yakima warranty is 2 Years. Rivian adventure gear warranty is 5 years. I did not hear them mention that in the video.
Thank you for breaking that down. I was thinking about cancelling the tent on my R1S order... you changed my mind. Thanks, all of you.
I think you have the start of a great business for building camp kitchens for electric trucks. Start with the RIvian, then the Lightning and the Silverado. Finally once the Cybertruck comes out you can build one for it as well.
$1700 for a heavy tent, I never understood the appeal of the car mounted tents. Just get a nice backpacking tent. It is way lighter and smaller and still very easy to setup.
It sets up in minutes in bad weather. It’s elevated above the floor which is an issue in bad conditions. Breaks down in minutes. To some people it’s the convenience which allows people to use it more often making it very worth the investment.
Im mentioning this here because I know there are a lot of newbies when it comes to rooftop tents and overloading in general. Yakima isn't the only brand that makes tents that will fit. Just about most rooftop tents on the market have adjustable mounting points that will work just fine on the Rivian. Do a bit of research, you'll be glad you did. Also, here's a pro-tip. Most people who buy rooftop tents end up selling them because it just doesn't make a lot of sense for most people to drive around with a tent on your car, so do yourself a favor and search on Facebook marketplace and you'll save even more than the guys in the video.
I wonder how small it becomes if dismounted and stowed. Noting that doing so will improve aerodynamics and thus range, but will loose the ability to transport other stuff wherever you stove it.
I looked but didn't see if someone else already mentioned, but 314 mi range is for 21" wheels and all-season tires. Seeing as you have the 20" AT wheels and tires, it would be ~10-15% less (~280mi) range.
Love this though as I bought the same Yakima tent 2 years ago to go on my Rivian that only just arrived, and used it on my Ram 1500 in the meantime... it worked great for both. 😂
to be fair to Rivian every auto manufacturer does something like this. bike racks, mats, etc are all contracted out
Love you guys! Every episode you do inspires me to make better content! Thanks for doing what you do!
Hey i know who you are 😛
Hey @Digi !
If you did that Conway round trip in an ICE truck, over half your sales tax savings is consumed in fuel cost. Now, place some value for your time driving and it’s a loss. But your Rivian is much more efficient.
Great video. Markups by dealers for “extras” are always high. That’s the cost adder for the convenience of not doing one’s homework.
Exactamundo! 👍👍
Great video. I love how that tent sets up and folds back up so easily
You guys and your editing are top notch and truly funny.
Saved? 1779 . Wow!
I'll save $3000+ and pay $79 for a tent/ LOL! or sleep in back for free!
Definitely buying this tent, thanks guys!
How do you like your RT1?
This absolutely absurd! This seems like a comedy skit but their serious! $80,000 EV truck that can only go 180 miles. $3,000 tent. What does this teach young people? Craziness! Bad investments!
I agree. The enthusiasm for "memory" foam mattresses was a marketing affair.
Memory is exactly what you don't want in a mattress. It reinforces bad habits.
What you need is good old fashioned steel springs, which, after their initial tempering, are memory-free.
guys, while you're at it....I've been looking to see if someone has made a tent a/c adapter. Thought is, have a plastic piece that is held by the rolled up window, a fan that draws air out of the truck, and ducting that is piped to the tent. Run the electris a/c all night and draw the air from the truck. Thoughts?
it fits on anything with that type of rail configuration....! whether the rails are on the roof or over the bed.
Next: Rivian threatens Yakima to stop selling the generic version
Shoot, I'd love to have one of those to throw on my '01 Tundra. Planning on turning it into a makeshift camper this summer, after I get my little Honda back on the road.
Yakuma can't legally say that their products fit rivian because rivian does already has a contract with them directly.
Wut. Bruh. I might be an idiot but I'm pretty sure you can't ve forced to deceive by contract.
You mean they choose to lie to customers to protect their profits.
Why else would yakuma say they don't make campers for rivian
Wow, nice job guys.
I'm looking forward to a cybertruck version of that tent. That $6,000 slide out kitchen is pretty cool looking but would rather build my own and make a fun project out of it
Sounds like a good project to me.
Nice
While you’re at it, Rivian chose the only bike mount to sell from Yakima as the wheel mount, and they announced it won’t fit any adult mtb, however Yakima sells fork and axle mount which will fit any mtb after removing the front wheel, and according to the intent net the 1up wheel mount rack fits an adult mtb (over 75” long I believe). So instead of announcing to the public that they CAN still put a mtb on the bed, they just said sorry put it on the roof. This gives a false negative perception. Can you text the 1up rack on an adult mtb?
There is no tax free state unless you live in that state. Use tax is a 6.25% tax paid on out-of-state or out-of-country purchases that are used, stored or consumed in Massachusetts and on which no Massachusetts sales tax (or less than 6.25%) was paid. Unlike the 6.25% sales tax, which is collected by sellers, use tax is generally paid directly to the state by the purchaser. I believe all sales tax states have this provision.
Yeah and whose doing that? 🙄
This episode was awesome!! I can’t wait for more like this. Please run with the camping and functionality of electric trucks ideas. Maybe have a guest on the show to give you their thoughts. Pull up to a campground or a construction site and see if you can get input
Well done lads really looking forward to that camp kitchen as well.
I love how he’s wearing a Tesla shirt while setting up a Rivian for camping.
🤣
*When I was having my 3,100 sqft 2-story house being built from the ground up I skipped all the extra stuff I could do myself. Like the 7 ceiling fans, all the 40-something blinds for the whole house, automatic garage door opener, etc... even the overpriced elaborate water system, etc... We saved over some $20,000 dollars! Turned out Home Depot would install the 3 automatic garage doors we bought there for just $50 bucks so we went ahead with that. All the ceiling fan locations were already pre-set by the builder. So, it only took me 15 minutes to install each ceiling fan. The company we bought our blinds from installed all those for no cost! Sear installed the soft water system which was more than half the price for the exact same model(instead of $5,000 from the model home people it only cost $2,000 at Sears) Bottom line if you can do it yourself and you're very handy with tools you can save a bundle.*
That matte black rivian looks awesome from the B roll
just to let you know batteries often don't show the full capacity because of how the driver drives. It averages out how you drive the vehicle to gauge the range you'll get. It would be like your physical gas tank changing sizes depending on how you drive. you're just conditioned to think when you fill it up to 15 gallons of gas you get 350 miles of range but truthfully you won't get 350 miles because you're likely not going to drive efficiently but you could if you did. The Battery just makes this adjustment for you to tell you what you really would get.
Very enjoyable and informative! 👍
Hi Zac & Jesse, been watching you guys for months now & love your shows. Was wondering if you know anything about Tesla Insurance glitch. I was denied insurance coverage on my Tesla model s! the only reason given by the Tesla Ins. Rep is they have a software glitch that stops you at a certain point on the app if you have another license class other than regular car license. I have a class "A" commercial license & am being denied insurance coverage simply because their software is unable to accept any other license classification. I would really appreciate it if you can spread the word & see if there is anyone to send complaints to that could expedite fixing this software app glitch, so all driver's can apply for Tesla Insurance.
thanks in advance Zac & Jesse.
I'm sorry to hear you were unable to get Tesla insurance because of your class "A" commercial license. That sure sounds frustrating. But even if they fix the glitch, most people will still not be able to get Tesla insurance because it's only available in 8 states in the US. People in other states or other countries are out of lock insurance-wise.
Tesla insurance is not available in my state. It is also illegal to sell or service Teslas here. I had to drive 5 hours (round trip) to get my car serviced out of state. I also paid extra to have my car trucked in from out of state when I bought it. I realize this does not help you or others in your situation, I just wanted to let you know that things could be worse.
I hope Tesla gets the class "A" glitch fixed soon. But I wouldn't be surprised if expanding coverage to more states is a higher priority since that might help a greater number of people.
First video. Immediately got my subscription. Great work gentlemen.
If you're looking for really high quality cooking kit, check out flat cat gear. I bought my Bobcat Kovea from them and it's a perfect cook system. It's a bit pricey when you upgrade everything to titanium. But I have been on so many adventures with it over the last couple of years.
Liked the video wish I could afford a Rivian Pick-up just have one question about Birch Mattress add.
What foundation/Base brand are you using at or about 1:56 please.
Longest ad I've ever seen on youtube tp start a video. Hopefully Birch paid you guys a shit ton for that one!
I saw a Rivian truck in Atlanta this morning. It was cool to see one in person.
how did you get that show up discount for 25% off in REI? I search and can't find any yakima tent in their REI website
That was my thought as well. awesome video guys!
Top tip.
The "sink" in the kitchen.
I bought *precisely* the same "silicon collapsible basket" (with the same handles) from A**zon (UK) last month, for £8.99 ($11.50) and that includes tax (VAT).
Various versions, colours and sizes available.
Just needs a suitable hole to drop into.

Duh
How long does take tent out of the bed if you need to use it.
My OCD would never allow this type of unsymmetrical installation. I need to see how us normal aliens would install it.
?? What did I miss??
I dozed off during the mattress commercial 😂
I'm still leaning towards getting a Rivian and was looking at the tent. If I get one I'll for ure remember to go to REI for the tent
Is the rivian epa range based on 21” rims with road tires or the 20” with all terrains.
The 314 miles is based on the 21” in All-Purpose mode. These guys were wrong.
I can't wait to see the kitchen that they build.
I am guessing you plan on driving and tenting in a country that drives on the left. You installed the tent backwards. Most people would have the ladder on the side away from traffic. the right side of a trailer and or coach is where the slab/patio , and a cabana are in the U.S. power, water, sewer are on the left. Just a thought.
Is the tent roomier than putting the seats down in a model y and using an air mattress.
Yes especially when you have to put your luggage on top of you when you sleep.😜
I finally just saw my first Rivian out in the wild. It's not a bad looking truck, but as a very long time truck user who actually uses their truck for actual work. This truck does not look like something that you could put to work and use it as a truck. It looks about as heavy duty as my wife's Nissan Murano and not much more honestly. I am not exaggerating one bit either.
This looks like it's for hauling things like that tent that they picked up or a home appliance like a washing machine. It says it's rated for 1,760 lb but I think you would kill that truck pretty quickly hauling that much weight. I couldn't imagine trying a deck package or 20 Plus bags of concrete. Probably 500 to 800 pounds is more realistic if you don't want to trash it prematurely. The motor probably pulls the load fine but so will pretty much any engine or motor.
Guys, over 2 minutes of ads before the content even begins is a bit off the chain
i wish i knew you were going to be there because i have a house in Madison N.H. and i shop in N. Conway regularly ... its an excellent place with all the outlet stores! i would imagine if you can purchase just that folding base of the tent kit from Yakima then just about any other tent would be capable of mounting onto its surface ?
That was a universal base, designed to fit the majority of trucks, so other tent brands should have a similar pattern.
Sure. DIY is always going to be cheaper.
Excited for the kitchen content
Do you have a link for the tent. Since my guide told me the tent isn’t available right now, I would be happy to save 40% and bypass Rivian for my needs. Great work and thank you.
You can save $700 by doing what you did, or save over $2,000 by buying a sheet of plywood, a $300 tent, a ladder, hinges, and some hardware.
Looks great. The truck tents have gained popularity but there seems to be some major drawbacks. Windy up high, pain to use the stairs at night to pee and non level ground is amplified up high.
Recommend when you design a kitchen make it an indoor tailgating kitchen with large insulated tent/gazebo. It should be easy to have a custom door put in for the kitchen. Add portable ac and Samsung frame tv with easel mount. Separate pop up bathroom/shower. Composting toilet with tankless water heater, pumps filtered water from creek. 4 Sonos move outdoor speakers. Philips Hue outdoor lighting. High end Electric air mattress
Still might need to figure out propane for fire pit tiki tourches and maybe tankless heater.
Once the kitchen slides out it should then hing out into an L. I would not try to include a refrigerator in it. I would go for the largest dometic that will fit in the bed. They are easy to move short distances, you can have a much larger refrigerator/freezer this way.
Kitchen should be constructed of 80/20 aluminum. Don’t consider anything else
A couple more you should put on your ultimate camper wishlist. Have a tent for both sides to use the full air conditioning/heating. Have another module that rides in the bed that fits in the other side of the port once you slide of the out your kitchen. This could be a big arm/wing for a solar panel if you did not want to go with the two ground tent option. I still think the rack should be covered with a big solar panel, that is covered with plexiglass so that it’s still can be a night observation deck. You could also mount racks for kayaks above the solar panels. They would be covered while traveling, but once you took the kayaks off the solar deck.
REI is SO worth it! WELCOME new members!
Have to be honest
All the dealers and manufacturers sell their accessories for over priced. Glad you did the research and found it cheaper but I'm not mad at Rivian. I'm hoping this truck sells like crazy and brand grows. I love in TX where most trucks are sold and this truck has so many everyday features and off road features they made a great truck
I must admit...it is laughable when the hosts talk about how they are avoiding taxes on the tent. They still owe it in the state they reside in. Sure no one ever pays it but they are in fact admitting they broke the law on a public forum
Cool , thanks guys
Well done!
good job guys
Wearing a Tesla jacket and shirt when working on a Rivian! Fun vid!
Nice job guys. Terrible marketing agreement Rivian. At least the range was ok. I'd sell it now and make $15k!! ( After a few podcasts)
Yea do it
If you don't already have it on your test list, please add "does a golf bag fit in the horizontal storage compartment?" test. To mee it looks like that's what it was made for, but I have not seen it done. Great video.
Even if your golf bag doesn't fit, another might. Anyway the shape is apparently whatever would fit between wheel well and cab, simply extended side to side with the space between wheel Wells used for whatever else they needed to build the car.
Thanks!
What the hell... just sat and watched a mattress advert for minutes 😳
I have a Tepui rooftop tent. Will it fit on my Rivian?
Great info! Thanks.
Funny, my camp kitchen cost $40 from Walmart! 🤣 Been using it for more than a decade.
I think this is one of the best videos you guys have made. You found all us of basically the same option for 45% off. I’m sure Rivian watching this video isn’t happy though haha…Thank you!!!!
@@belzvon Not sure I agree on the "trying to bring down Rivian" bit, though omitting the cost of the cargo bars (and membership) was a bit disingenuous. It's still a $780 (or thereabouts) saving though, just buying what the Rivian site specifies separately instead of the pre-packaged option (Rivian even specifies the Yakima model on their gear shop page).
Best video?!?! How does finagling a discount demonstrate Rivian lied?
@@deankramer811 yeah I guess it was Yakima that lied when they claimed it wouldn't fit.
You drove all the way up to North Conway to save sales tax on the tent? Well, at least you got an adventure out of it.
8:41 Looks like you have a little, tiny red truck sitting on top of the cargo bars.
You didn't need to stap down that gigantic box boys. Closing the tailgate would have sufficed. LOL!
Thank you 🙏🏽 Thank you 🙏🏽
You can literally shoved a mini electric stove, a bucket, an electric pump, shower head, folding table, kitchen utensils and plastic dishes inside the gear tunnel for maybe $200?
I live in souther NH and saw a blue rivian a few weeks ago, I wonder if it was you guys! Still waiting on my reservation :(
Can you please provide a model number for the Yakima tent??
I think you could make your own camp kitchen setup for under $2000, $3500 if you buy the Rivian slider part.
Chances are they can make their own slider. You can buy roller slides etc.
I have never seen a title on this show that says Tesla lied!
I guess you haven't been paying attention: czcams.com/video/9l6DPwKHWpY/video.html
they slammed Tesla pretty hard a few months ago on their service center quality.
Do it. Cyberlandr has done some good research on the components needed to build a kitchen. I don't believe for a second that a camp kitchen is $5k worth of items. Great experiment to see if Rivian could be bypassed.
High profit margin.
Good job guys!
I got a small 2 person RTT of another brand for just under $1,000 there are definitley cheaper options, then if you buy used you can get for even cheaper as well. They are definitley trying to upcharge people who just want it all from the factory.
Great idea guys ✌️
You saved a bunch of people a bunch of money!
Very nice!
Add a solar panel and trickle charge some batteries to run the kitchen. A basic one or two burner with a griddle and storage beneath, bam.
Crazy. They think if you have a Rivian you’re rich and stupid. I went by that camp ground and saw a moose in the lake, so be very, very careful storing your food.
Mileage is 315 give it take minus 20 if you got sport wheels and minus 40 or something like that if you got the off-road wheels
Just throwing this out there. When you talk about saving money by traveling you should account for your time and the cost of travel, too.
Deduct the travel expenses (at the very least food and power for the Rivian), plus your hourly wages per hour it took to save that money (that’s what your time is worth).
What a refreshing real world test! Nice to see you outside the studio👍 It proves you don't need the manufacturers add on to succeed on out door camping. I do hope we the consumer will see more content like this from you both. It was informative and fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I wonder if the same tent will fit the r1s SUV. I heard they share the same roof rack
Also if you can hack a pull out kitchen for the SUV.. please, looking forward to your next videos
You could also just get a regular tent for $200. And save even more lol.
Great vid!
I gotta say, I think I would definitely prefer a motel room.
A tent you don't have to hook to your vehicle is like..... a few hundred bucks. I don't get it. :)
I live in New Hampshire, wasn't expecting my state to be a part of this video.
No way, I recognize all of these roads. It's strange to think a Rivian has been so close to me and I was completely unaware!
They’re everywhere now, I see one every couple weeks on average.
Seems to be a few GOOFBALLS buying these trucks! $80,000 no parts to fix them. Can only go 180 miles. Where do I sign up?.
Sweet!!
