Worth noting, it takes more than "just talking to your utility" when back feeding power. The "gateway" box that is installed with a powerwall system contains an isolation contractor that allows you to island your house when the power goes out along with distribution breakers. Most utilities require this UL cert. box to allow you to connect a grid tied inverter if you want backup power. Otherwise the inverter just off when the grid goes down. It ensures that the inverter doesn't backfeed when people are working on the power lines.

I installed this same system in my garage. My main issue with these batteries will be in the winter months. I was mislead by the sales guys that they could be used within certain temperatures and outdoor rate however I later realized the temperature will need to be around 40 degrees F for charging. Now I need to add a heating system around the batteries. Too bad they don't include heaters like other similar batteries on the market. they claim they can be installed outdoors however they neglect to mention that your house needs to be in a warm climate where it does not dip below 32 degrees.

Something I want to mention about doing the electrical yourself. If you are unsure on your ability or worried about insurance. You can hire a electrician to inspect the work you did and sign off on it. Rather then them putting in the time.
that's what my parents did when they built their home.
And mind you this is in Germany (I was perplexed that this is allowed, but since you have documentation that a professional said it's ok, then it's ok)

I'm an electrician and this system seems easy enough for talented homeowners. One thing I would suggest is that you guys inform people that you have construction experience that makes these projects easy for you.

Just perchased 5 eg4 powerpro batteries 14.3kw apiece. So 71.5kw total for $17,193.60 or $3438.60 per 14.3kw battery. delivered to my garage. And an eg4 18kpv inverter for $5,199. And 30 390watt panels $3568. I will be installing it all myself. Have to have a licensed electrician hook it up in my circuit breaker panel. Will be grid tied. So have to get permits and have it inspected.
The 18kpv inverter will do everything. Grid tie, islanding, batteries, start your generator. Everything. Eg4 batteries have heaters built-in. As well as fire extinguishers. Even though they are lfp batteries.
They are behind the meter. Not sure they need inspection.

Eg4 batteries are cheaper and come in a cabinet with wheels. I am entirely off grid with a similar system. I have 60 kWh of batteries and 10 kW of solar. Eventually I plan to double my system.
I have the same, but there are other options like this that work better for small footprints and skill levels. Having multiple options is good for this future. I like seeing new options on the market and all the ideas of how to implement it.
Did you need to get any permits? Did you ground mount the solar or roof mount?
@@PerfectorZY it depends on where you live. For me, I had to have the electric company pull the meter so I could install, then I got an inspection before they would reattach the meter.
I have too many trees to ground mount, so I installed to the roof and a workshop.
HOA is the hardest part.
There are "Pro's" and "Con's" with any system depending on your footprint and performance needs. EG4 is a great company but I do not believe they offer a stackable vertical battery like THE ETHOS. If you prefer a Rack-Mount battery, they have great options. It really depends on your preference and skill level. If you don't like the Rhino 2 or the ETHOS, then EG4 has other options that might fit your needs. I support that company because we are both attempting to make Green Energy AFFORDABLE FOR ALL. : )
Eg4 makes powerpro batteries 14.3kw wall mount LFP. They have heaters and fire extinguishers built in. Plug and play with eg4 18kpv inverter $5199. I just got 5 of them for $17193.60. Delivered to my garage.
314ah MB31 EVE cells can be had for $89 each, 16 of those, a DIY battery box with JK inverter BMS for $400ish from China gives you a 16 kwh battery for around $2000.
And it's easily serviceable/upgradeable.
Including the Lux Power 12kW Inverter the price jumps up to $10,690, right?! The Tesla PW3 has the Inverter built in… Tesla still more expensive but not like half the price!
Unless you are qualified to do it yourself. Installation costs bite.

Plus the Lux Power inverter is a huge, ugly space hog compared to the 11.5 inverter in the PW3. Really not an spples to apples.
And I forgot to add, the Lux Power is NOISY as hell...
LuxPower is similar to the MultiPlus II from Victron, but the Victron system is more modular and works with generic 48V batteries. For example, with Pylontech US3000C LiFePO4 3.5kWh, which are significantly cheaper and more redundant (because each has its own controller). The wiring is just as simple. This is not meant to be an advertisement, just another example. For DIY, I would strongly advise against DC strings. I like to do everything myself, but even with LuxPower, you have to connect high DC voltage to land in the correct MPPT range. High DC currents are EXTREMELY dangerous and need special protection. For DIY, I would always recommend microinverters because you connect low voltage on the DC side, and no AC flows as long as the fuses are off as usual during installation. Besides the added safety and redundancy, you can also start cheaply without a battery and battery inverter in the world of photovoltaics and add a battery later.

Okay now you need to remove the cables going into the bottom of the inverter and put cable protectors on the holes then you can happily re-connect the inverter an sleep well at night knowing the cables can’t be cut by the sheet metal holes 🤣

Do some research and you will find this one is $1300 to $1800 more then others with the same specs prebuilt and has proper certifications. . Or build your own for about $1900 with everything needed in build kits and add the batteries (no certifications for safety and might be illegal to use if tied to a grid, check with local law first) Still I think big battery is one of the higher priced batteries on the marker. Although that inverter is a nice one.
Just wanted to say, for UL-Certified ESS our ETHOS is currently competing on the lowest end of the pricing market as of July 1st 2024!
Doesn’t make sense to compare diy batteries and even rack mounts to this made ready easy to put together modular system.

Sounds suspiciously similar to the Canadian solar ep cube solution. I'd love to see a side by side comparison of these two solutions.
Those with (grandfathered) Net Metering & a reliable supplier use the grid as their battery. Not only is that GT system cheaper, but it also has unlimited storage capacity. And that’s exactly why finding a utility that still offers Net Metering is impossible.
'Impossible' seems pretty hyperbolic. Here in PA, the Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards Act (AEPS) was passed in 2004, guaranteeing all customers who have their own generation the option to use net metering, and the utilities cannot prevent it. "...the law requires all electric utilities (aka Energy Distribution Companies) in the state to purchase excess renewable energy from eligible system owners at the full-retail rate". Like all things, it will depend on where one lives.
How will this Powerwall do in Canadian weather? Looks like a great product.

Could you address the permitting problems with indoor storage of lithium batteries. Did you get a permit? Did you have to install a sprinkler system? In Mass you are required to pull a permit and get an inspection for indoor battery storage.
Good stuff, I recently put together a 5K hybrid inverter, 5.15K LFP battery and seven 450W panels. I initially set it as an emergency backup with a Reliance 6 circuit transfer switch. I have ended up just leaving it hooked up all the time. Amazing how the MPPT works. The manufacturer is SungoldPower. All modular and expandable. The only problem I have is figuring out the Chinese to English translation in the provided manuals. Tech support is so,so. I suspect my next power bill will be less than half of what it normally is. (220 appliances still on grid)
Side note: Had a power outage the other day….didn’t even notice until I received a text from the power company. 😊

I built a power system in the '90s using a trace inverter and 4 golf cart batteries. Now I'm looking to upgrade to a modern hydroelectric system.
10:32 Yeah, because the system needs to be permitted, built to Code, pass the final inspection. Then the utility interconnection can start.
If the steps above are not followed then we’ll have random people installing batteries without a ground, inside bed rooms, and have conductor dangling outside of conduit.

I plan on buying the used solar panels and mounting them in a large area of my backyard because my roof is covered in shade and I can’t get enough panels installed up there anyway. Do you have a list of items for a compete install and maybe do one list for On Grid and one for Off Grid?

We should be reducing our power usage not dumping 20,000 into an even bigger battery and solar contraption😮 I have been living without electricity for 4 months and I love it😮 if you don't have electricity you can use candles but candle light is much softer than a big bright light😮 and this makes you go to sleep earlier as soon as it gets dark can you wake up with the sun around 4:00 a.m. 5:00 a.m.😮 this is much healthier for your circadian system anyway and you get to sleep good😮 and provides better rejuvenation throughout the night so you feel better overall😅

I would be interested in adding that to my existing system, but apparently the controller is not compatible with Solaredge hybrid converters. I would have to swap out my inverter(s) and likely need a permit from the city. Definitely don't need that marathon headache again!!!

Something you are not telling the viewers is that in some places if you produce more energy than allowed, your home insurance company changes the classification from domestic to commercial due to the risk of fire, which according to the insurance involves producing electrical energy without certification.
Power wall is not accessible for diy. So, I built my own system with 40 KW batteries + 10 kw solar. Is way cheaper and performing as well.
What I like about this is you can now use your Powerwall for VPP and use your Ethos for the house.

I have complete control of my system and the power it produces. 17 kWh of panels, 60 kWh of lifepo4 and luxpower 18k. If you want to add on in the future this is the way to go. If you want to build your own batteries this is the way to go. If you’re busy, don’t want to bother and want to offset grid use without worry about it tesla is the way to go.

11k power wall installation? I was quoted 20k in WA state. Everyone quotes the same price. I always tell them your crazy that install price is way more than the battery itself.
Cheapest I could find for powerwall 3 installed with gateway $15,300. I can get eg4 18kpv inverter plus 14.3kw powerpro battery for $7572.97. They are plug and play pretty much together. The battery is LFP and has built-in heaters and fire extinguishers.

86% of all lithium batteries are made in China. Much of this manufacturing is coming back to the USA now due to Tariff & IRA. We have opened a 310,000/SF cell MFG facility in Dallas TX where we plan on producing 280Ah LFP Cells. The goal is 100% Made In The USA.

I just got my self 50 nmc batteries of 12s cells total of 55kwhrs and each module for 80 bucks with shipping. Anyways does the inverter support no back feed and do AC cuppling with the solar that ok the house ? That would be a nice feutire to have when the bride goes out and you have micros inverters with your current solar on the roof. And also when it's during the day.

So I received a "free TESLA POWERWALL" from PG&E (Santa Clara County, Santa Cruz Mountains), I want to add either another Power-Wall in series ($$$$?) or is this system if it is series compatible? Every other rate user (PG&E) paid for this with me so if I just need to purchase a Powe-Wall for in series configuration ($7000) SHOULD I DO IT SINCE I REALLY DIDN'T PAY FOR THE ORIGINAL INSTALL? Or can I actually compound my installation with this EHTOS configuration to complement the one Power-Wall that I really didn't pay for totally ($15000 for an install of one PW?) Is the ethos compatible with Sunpower solar system? I’m getting confusing information from my installer who only installs Powerwalls.
