I want to thank you and Barry Hasenkofp who basically shows the same repair. My temperature control unit was acting up. On-off,some part on... a mess. I asked companies to do it for me but they said it wouldn't work so for $10.80 I bought a solder iron, soder, soder sucker and a resistor. Carefully watched both your videos and 30 minutes later: BINGO! Back in business. My suggestion: squeeze the housing (left/right/left/right etc) to pull the circuit boards out. Thanks again!
BMW 318I E36......fantastic fix in just 80cents, unbelievable how this tiny capacitor can cause this problem.my complete display was off, every to normal operation after replacing this cap, I used .47 microfarads 100volts. Hats off to you.

Did have some difficulty trying to locate the new capacitor, in the end soldered in some thin wire and attached the capacitor remotely (at about 3/4 of an inch) plenty of room in the casing for this approach. BMW 3 Series E36 1998.

@@mrbondohrama The symptoms were erratic display, the climate control unit was only intermittantly working and not responding to any of the controls. From memory, it was a ceramic type capacitor.
I used this and a number of other similar videos to do this repair. I had this one playing whilst making the repair. 33 US cents for the capacitor and I was back in business... hello from TX
No, need to replace cap!!! The cap is good... However, underneath the cap I knot iced that when they were made the end of the cap folds over and that is what shorts the cap! It works fine when new... But, over time the protective coating/resin turnd into goop and slides away and and it begins to short the cap! Just, simply bend the barb on the underside of the cap where it is
Thank you so much!! My problem was that the climate control was turning on and off randomly! By changing the capacitor as per the video i fixed the problem, no more turning off. By the way, i bought a polarized capacitor, it shows where the negative is, so guys if you gona use a polarized one just follow the others capacitors marking. So if all of them show the negative one side install the new one as the others side. Thanks for the video, so usefull. It costed me 8 cents

I have similar issues and rooting around on the web the consensus seems to be that your FSU unit is on the fritz. Just do a search. It's similar fix to this but no soldering. I wish us both luck.

Would have definitely been more beneficial if you would have described what issues you were having and how do you know if the problem is the capacitor versus the resistor or even a clogged air filter or blower motor? UPDATE - 97 328i here, I did not need to do this, I changed out the blower motor resistor (final stage unit) and it fixed my issue. I did not have heating or cooling, but took years to eventually go all the way out. Resistor is easier to change out than do this procedure so I would check that first.

Hello, I had a mad climate control unit, it had a mind of it's own. I followed the video and changed the capacitor, now the unit seems to function perfectly, all the buttons, the display etc, all except the actual blower/fan, the display responds to the control buttons but the fan doesn't blow. Before when the unit had a moment of normaltiy the fan did work, but since I did this repair the fan doesn't blow.. Any ideas..?
I have an e36 from the 94, the climate control is not digital like this. The problem is that mine has lights on the buttons and those lights stay on all the time and sometimes not when I start the car, but when I activate them manually they don't work. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

mine AC doesn't work all the time... when i'm driving, sometimes it turns on and off by itself... and when I try to turn on, doesn't work.... and sometimes the luminosity appears weak(and does not work again).. Is that what I need to do to fix this problem ??? Thank you!

Soldered in upward... So, it's not shorting it out! I did this and it worked like a charm!!!!

yes, this is a commun problem on climate control of the E36s, you should try, just like the video ..
